After spending almost 6 hours on the nest, Shadow graciously delivers a fish for Jackie, all the while being chased by a Sub-Adult in an apparent attempt at kleptoparasitism.
Kleptoparasitism - stealing food or prey from another animal. Young eagles (and let's be honest, Adults too!) do that a lot.
The visitors has a rugged, uneven wing feathers. This suggests they have only molted once and likely hatched in 2022.
There is no way to tell definitively whether this is Spirit or not, because Spirit was not banded. There is also no definitive research into whether adult would recognize their returning offspring. Territorial adults would likely treat them as intruders, even more so during the nesting season.
The best thing we could do is to determine whether the bird is of the appropriate age group, i.e. #CouldBeSpirit.
    ℹ️Raptor Vocab 101: Aging🪶Juvenile = 1st year, Sub-Adult = between Juvenile & Adult, Immature = either Juvenile or Sub-Adult, Adult = Definitive plumage bit.ly/3tcOWHe
    🥚Egg1 was laid 1/25 16:55 bit.ly/48OfNt5, Egg2 was laid 1/28 13:59 bit.ly/3OkpEi7, Egg3 was laid on 1/31 17:58 bit.ly/3SGTwb5 .
It is unlikely that the eggs will hatch at this point. We have no way of knowing why. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together - in 2019 and 2022.
When eggs don’t hatch, Jackie and Shadow may start withdrawing from incubation eventually (they usually over incubate for several weeks, details can be found in our Activity Log). Withdrawal is always a process and it happens gradually with longer and longer breaks. Shadow may be a little bit more stubborn than Jackie (this is something we have observed in the past). Left unattended, the eggs may eventually be scavenged by ravens or other animals. The nest cameras are live 24/7/366 weather and maintenance permitting.

ℹResident Bald Eagle female: Jackie (unbanded) since September 2016. Estimated hatch year: 2012

It's amazing how much snow they have endured. Maybe there is a blessing in this, that the eggs did not hatch, as it could have been a hard time for the little ones. In spite of all this, they are truly majestic soul mate birds.

Oh my the closeup of the ice and water beads on the feathers...such amazingly tough birds. Their persistent dedication to this clutch of eggs really is heartbreaking.

lol. When he shows up for the first time, all dry, and she is covered in snow, the look on her face is priceless. Love these two.

I love Jackie & Shadow they are amazing love birds ,,, the dedication that these beautiful birds put into their unvaible eggs truly can teach humans a thing or 2 about being better parents to their own children ... these birds tough out extreme weather conditions and they don't give up too easy ... I know eventually they will know when the time is right to leave the nest completely all I know that next year will be a better year to raise some beautiful chicks ,,, sending prayers for Jackie & Shadow...🙏🏿🙏🏿🪺

My compliments to the camera operators- the nest closeups are fantastic! Loved the water beading on Shadow’s feathers. And who among us doesn’t sleep snug on a snow pillow?

The sub-adult reminded me of someone with the urgent squees! 💖 Poor Shadow didn't get to eat the bluegill head today.

  • @matthewhibbard9807

Love when Jackie is chillin in the middle of her snow donut.

  • @honusmom5144

    ❤❤❤❤ Shad's water/ice bling - like sequins on a starlet's gown at an award show 🌟🤩

More snow today!? This might be my fave video of J&S ever. That opening scene was so sweet… J using snow as pillow, S flying in and them cocking their heads to the side in unison, the way they both start calling out and J getting snow in her mouth. Snowy scene accentuates all their behaviors. The zoom in of S(?) resting his head on the snow melted my heart. 💕 And those beads of melted snow were so perfect… reminds me of flat marbles. The snow bowl looks so perfect, even I want to sit in it!

Amazing how gow peaceful they are sleeping in the storm.
