Where breezes blow in Kitsilano
James Hogg flew over to the Left Coast (yeah)
To start up this great Centre that could really boast (yeah)
The H-L-I
Lung research with much passion reigned
Intens’ty this migration gained
Add in Paré and the Centre would grow
Slowly, slowly
Animals is what they built their program on
Lisa kept them organized and movin’ on
Those days some people didn’t fear
That they would have a short career
People smoked and choked and didn’t last long
They started to gather friends, trainees, and dollars
Space to recruit lung and crit’cal care scholars
Brought expertise that others could only dream of
(Oh yeah!)
Adding many instruments, tools magnífico
Seeing floors shined and the roof didn’t leak-o
For all involved they were true labours of love
Exquisito!
Describes where we work in the lab’ratorio
But you cannot exit, and you cannot leave-o
Even when you arrive here very early-o
Exquisito!
It’s been forty years in the lab’ratorio
It grabs you tight and then it never lets go-o
Brings you in and on you it will grow and grow-o
(More than others can know,
Exquisito!)
Why do lungs keep breathing and hearts continue to squeeze-o?
Blood must pass through to the tissues
So that your life can continue
(Like a yo-yo, like a yo-yo, daily)
So Allard, Walley, McManus rendezvoused, you know-o
Techs and admins, they would join too
Wendy, Dean, Stuart, and Joe-o
The team expanded and was superb-o
The patients needed some heroes
‘Round the drain of life without those
Stayin’ alive would be by luck-o
All of the smart trainees raise notions to solid facts, facts
Curiosity and sweat open up all new tracts, tracts
But don’t cry if your bodies are all the way out of whack-o
We can, we can, we can probe deeply your ailing phenotype-o
Our teams know organs, tissue, cells, molecular, fo’ sho’
We can dream up studies wearing sombreros
In vitro, in vivo
In situ, in silico
Our people need no intro
We have all the info
And the good connections
With a large selection
Of samples biobanked
Into a collection
In vitro, in vivo
In situ, in silico
Our people need no intro
We have all the info
When we’re at the lab bench
We set plans in motion
Cruising on clouds to discovery devotion
(Oh yeah!)
Exquisito!
Working long shifts in the lab sure checks your ego
Everybody wonders if you’re just a weirdo
Going around mumbling micro, nano, pico
Exquisito!
Though your head’s a-spinning like you’ve got vertigo
All of your break time will still be getting vetoed
Workin’ hard producin’ all those manuscritos
(Drippin’ drippin’ drippin’
Mucho sweato!)
Why do lungs keep breathing and hearts continue to squeeze-o?
Blood must pass through to the tissues
So that your life can continue
(Like a yo-yo, like a yo-yo, daily)
If you are a genius, and you come to walk through these doors
Science will rise, it’s quite stunning
Put on your Skechers, get running
Exquisito!
All our experiments are gonna be thorough
We are researching for a better tomorrow
Then our findings will definitely go viral
(Nobel Prize-o!)
In vitro, in vivo
In situ, in silico
Our people need no intro
We have all the (info)
Here we study pulm and cardio
So that your life can continue
(Like a yo-yo, like a yo-yo, daily)
In vitro, in vivo
In situ, in silico
Being at the bench-o
Is better than (Tofino)
If you like science and smiles-o
Spread the word, raise the flag high-o
Exquisito!
