What I like about their relationship is that it feels so organic. It's a bond formed from years of being around, depending on and knowing each other. Even their interactions feel so natural like Astrid braiding Hiccup's hair or Hiccup planting that small kiss on Astrid's head.
Their relationship sets an actual healthy example for the kids watching. It's one of the only trilogies/shows that take it slow. Their bond escalates step by step and becomes stronger as they mature. It teaches the viewer that relationships take time, effort, dedication and loyalty. They are literally real. The way they act around each other, the way they advise and feel pride for one another. It's all so real. It moves from childish spontaneous pecks to passionate and more intimate, romantic moments between the two. I love how the writers did everything possible to visualize something so important. From kids to grown-ups, everybody's got something to learn from this couple.

Seriously, the writers of this franchise really know how to write a realistic couple. It's the familiarity, the closeness, and the easy display of affection that set them so far above most fictional couples in any cinematic representation of romantic relationships.
HTTYD has amazing facial and body language cues that are so accurate and realistic that i feel are lacking in majority of animations. But you can really see the animators understood because of the hand placements for these kisses. The waist holding, the way Hiccup puts his hand on Astrid's face/neck, it all makes it feel so much more realistic and intimate, and it makes it so much better :')
It’s crazy seeing how their relationship progressed over the years from awkward acquaintances to literal parents. I was sooo obsessed with them when I was a preteen in 2012. I graduated college just last year and haven’t thought about the HTTYD series in years. Time flies wild.

To awkward tweens with spontaneous and very unexpected kisses, to teenagers in their first relationship where they're always kissing on the lips, to them as young adults where the intimacy has become much more casual and it's, besides the more passionate kisses on the lips, it's small pecks on the head, on the cheek, quick shows of affection rather than big gestures but that carry even more love in them that has built over the years, culminating in their own wedding and having kids together 😭❤
