A Walk following the Mardyke Way from Purfleet, Essex through the countryside on the edge of Greater London to the village of Bulphan. The Mardyke is an ancient river that has been following its course for over 30 million years. The route I took from Purfleet was around 11-miles followed by around another 3 miles to West Horndon Station. This is great walk through fields, meadows and fens.

There is a story that Purfleet gets its name from a visit by Queen Elizabeth I - the story goes that she got off her Royal barge onto the King’s Walk causeway (behind the Royal Hotel) and complained about pain in her feet “Oh my Pur-fleet!”. I have no idea if this is true - love the story though!

Great video John. The stretch between the fourteen arches and that old stone road bridge near Stifford Hill, and the woods to the north of the river, was the stomping ground for my pals and me during the summer holidays of many years ago. Days spent trying to catch Sticklebacks in the river or playing runouts in the woods. Thanks for the memories!

Re Lyme disease, I got bitten last year. Ticks are such an annoying thing to have to worry about and almost impossible to see. Check the back of your knee. I was very lucky to find one having a nice feed in the soft skin there. Tick removal tool and disinfectant to the rescue thankfully.

The cafe at Herne Hill Velodrome would make a good place to stop if you're walking that way. There's a lot of history to the venue. If you time it for when one of the regular track leagues is on there's a very happy, warming atmosphere there too (and the cafe will definitely be open 🙂).

The Mardyke has 3 main tributaries: the most easterly rises in Dunton near the Ford Motor Tractor plant in what is probably Basildon. The northerly branch comes out of Thorndon Country Park just west of the village of Ingrave/ Herongate and the most westerly of the 3 rises behind the Upminster tube depot.

Hard to think that it was once navigable all the way to Bulphan - the end of your treck. Very enjoyable - thank you.

I'm not sure if you would count it as a lost river, but not so very far to the east of here on Canvey Island, Smallgains Creek once flowed into the Thames Estuary. In 1955 it was dammed by a wall to protect the Island from flooding, and became known as Canvey Lake. It is said to be haunted by the ghost of a man who, one night, drunkenly drove his horse and cart into the water. It's certainly home to a lot of very noisy Canada geese.

Hi John, your problem at Harrow bridge is understandable, the footpath across land from there is poorly marked and confusing, just carry on along fen lane for another five minutes, turn left at China Lane, carry on past Slough house you will then cross the Mardyke on an iron bridge, and follow the footpath all the way to West Horndon across some lovely farmland.
l would go back and just do that, you pass Field house farm, can see Langdon hills to the right, East Horndon church on the hill ahead, and to the north ,Thorndon hall and Warley, ending up in The Railway pub in WH where you will feel very welcome....😊
