Thanks Joel, you saved this dogs life and now she (and owners) will also have a good quality of life! I can’t stand those other trainers who recommend to an owner to put their dog down - no good trainer would do this. The correct solution if the trainer’s methods aren’t working is to recommend a different trainer…not all dogs and trainers are compatible. Glad these owners had the foresight to ignore that horrible advice and seek you. Well done to all!
Prince is unbelievable. This was an awesome video, I learn a lot 💪 our dog is also a herding dog, but he has FOMO lol 😅 1,5 yo, we are slowly slowly getting there with him 🤞👏
I can't believe someone wanted to put this dog down. Just shows you how ignorant many people are. She is clearly not an aggressive dog but was reacting really just out of fear and the unknown. Once she figured out that not everyone she encounters whether it be a dog or human wants to hurt her, she started to relax and just start looking like a normal dog! I had a border collie once as a kid, and it was also a girl, she was such a sweet dog! Glad this dog has a home!
My friends Rob and Bel have a cat. Rob is quiet energy, Bel is a nervous spazz. If they have company over, the cat acts up. Clawing, swatting etc. If she herself has guests over, same thing. If he has friends over and Bel is out doing something else, the cat is super chill and friendly.
I just recommended your videos to my neighbor, Jeremy. People are saying to him, "Some dogs are just born mean and there's nothing you can do." He's spent thousands of dollars on 3 different trainers, all positive reinforcement trainers with zero results. The dog is about a year old now. He's bit 9 people (not severely) and several dogs, including my own (Luckily my dog had his winter jacket on so all he got was a mouthfull of cotton and a tiny tuft of hair before my dog put him in his place and he backed off. When he backed off I knew he wasnt just bad, but only because I watch Beckmans videos all the time. Beckmans vids helped me a lot when I first got Teddy, my first and only dog ever. Although the loose lease thing was a bust. I swear by his gentle leader. But Teddy is a whole different story and, though he's not a dog park dog, he's doing great these days and he can tolerate, even loves, other dogs for short meetings on the mountain trails. And he hasnt bit my sleeve and dragged me to the ground since the first couple of months I had him-years ago now-Thanks, Beckman!) My neighbor is talking about bringing him out in the woods and shooting him. Jeremy thinks dominance training is hurting your dog. He said, "I cant do anymore physical things to him. It'll make him worse." I tried to explain thats not what it is At All, but he just needs to watch your videos. I hope he does. This same guy who thinks dominance training means hurting your dog bought a shock collar for him. Heck, Jeremy has the money. He could maybe even bring the pup to Cali. I just know that Beckman could fix this dog and Jeremy is so heartbroken about the biting. He wont invite anyone over anymore. He feels lonely and "boxed in," but he really loves his dog. He got him at 3 months and used to cradle him like a baby. Plus his wife got his last dog in the divorce. Anyway, I know Beckman can fix this dog and I'm going to keep pushing Jeremy to watch the videos. It seems like a little fear, a little protection, and maybe a little socialization. The point is, I know Beckman could fix this puppy.
My dog (husky/gsd) is wanttosayhitoeveryone reactive on a leash, not terrible, but not good either. Another person walking their dog parallel to us accross the street was a great opportunity. I asked if they were willing to do so for a few more blocks, and he agreed. Started with end of leach pop, then but touch until he looked at me and not the other dog..... then all of a sudden, boom, loose leash again. He was looking and doing his husky prance, but at my side. Woohoo, win for today!
First time I've seen a reaction like that, that fear-barking but still lungeing at the other dog. Good boy Prince just took a look at her and went "meh" lol
Thank you God for people like this guy! in my community the dog would have gotten a whooping with a newspaper 😢 I have learned alot by watching a few of his videos
Thanks for another great video, Joel. In the future, could you make a video showing more "people stuff" and how you deal with dogs who are fearful of strangers? I mean not just leash reactivity, but real fear of strangers (e.g., running, cowering, and shrinking around strangers, whether they're guests, the vet/groomer, or people out in public).
Like always, this was really interesting. Though not everyone has the privilege of having a dog like prince around to make these exercises. I`m so impressed with him.🥰
The sad thing is, not only do animals need to be treated to this kind of desensitization, but humans need more interaction as well. Our world is suffering because people close themselves off to affection/love and it turns to fear
@MEH that's because kindness is shown as weakness. True kindness isn't taught, it's learned. People take advantage because they know nothing more than what they're taught in shitty environments (home/school/the streets)
Well I guess there IS hope for my dog and I. Have not been able to desensitize my 15 lb terrier mix. Wild and aggressive (looking) with dogs and humans. Barking, snarling, lunging. A little discouraged because I’ve tried several things and spent quite a lot of money. This video was encouraging tho. Thanks.
Damn when I watch all of the Dog training videos on RUclips I think to my seft dan having a Dog Is a huge chore and a hustle , If I'd live on my own I wouldn't own one just because of how much of a work I Must do.
Joel mentions he cut out some footage where the dog was reacting to people. I could watch these videos all day, he could have left that bit in as far I am concerned.
Dear Joel, I'm so impressed with your work. I've been following along here on RUclips for a while and I just love the way you help dogs and owners. Do you know anyone in Scandinavia that works with dogs the same way you do? I have a 2 year old intact male Spanish Water dog that is quite aggressive/dominant/jerky towards almost every dog he meets, and I've tried just about everything. Up here it's VERY positive only, so I've been through all of that and now live to regret it daily, since it seems to just have made things much worse. I've since focused a lot on obedience and his is pretty awesome, so I manage all right, but I want to solve the problem instead of just managing it, and I definitely think your method is the way to go.
She is an incredibly beautiful border collie! Border collies are my absolute favorite dogs for their looks, personality and intelligence. But they require a huge amount of exercise, training and mental stimulation daily, or they become unstable and are a problem. I currently have a 3 year old rescue border collie that was going to be put down due to going 'completely nuts' at the local SPCA. People looking for a dog to adopt had simply passed him by, thinking he would be a huge problem. No one wanted him. Most people don't understand border collies, the SPCA workers didn't. What he was actually exhibiting was distress, panic and anxiety, it was not his personality showing, and as someone who has always had border collies I recognised the symptoms immediately. The first time I walked him, on lead, (after getting him home from the SPCA) I stepped into a hole and twisted my ankle. Crying out in pain I dropped the leash and fell to the ground. The dog didn't run off, on the contrary, he came straight to me to check that I was okay, obviously concerned about me. I knew then that I had struck gold and ended up with a gentle, loving, kind, intelligent angel of a border collie, and every day he proves it over and over again. A dog that has never, not even once, exhibited the manic behavior he was displaying while at the SPCA.
My border collie was the best dog ive ever had. She wasn't socialized much but she was an absolute working machine, some times they don't need socialization they just have to get put to work. That dog was the first one out to the barn and the last one back to the house, she didn't really want anything to do with people other than me but any time i needed backup putting animals back in the fence you never had to tell her twice.
I took in a healer that was abandoned in the desert, he was around 1-2 years old, unsocialized. I also took in my late neighbors 10 year old boxer mix, and she taught him not to be messing around. he was aggressive towards everything and everybody til I got my boxer mix, and after 2 rather serious incidents where my boxer pinned him they are now 2 peas in a pod, he's now a very social loving dog, thanks to the natural pecking order.
I was amazed how quickly the dog, at the beginning, was SO "aggressive". Suddenly that which it was aggressive towards, is NOW holding the leash. Ok, I follow leash. 😳🤪
Prince is cracking me up. Staying just out of reach ! Soon as Joel took the leash she wasn’t after him. Joel you must have the best “temperament”. Ever
I’m new to the pursuit of learning about dogs and their behaviors… I think I may be lucky or maybe I passively trained her without knowing but my Labrador pit mix has never shown any “bad” behaviors other than chewed some of my clothing I left on the floor a couple times lol she lefts me handle her food while she eats… never aggresses animal or people, she never saw a cat in her 1.5 years of life until I went on a 7 day cruise and left her with my mom and family they have 5 cats and 2 dogs… and reportedly did great despite her animals aggressive protectorate behavior to my dog for 24 hours… then they were all best pals apparently. Such a good dog and I think all I did was get her while she was 7 weeks old…? 😂 anyways I liked the info in this first video and how it was presented/edited so I will be watching more. Subbed too
You sound like the ideal target audience for this channel. No offense but you sound like a terrible owner which is usually indicative of all this 'my dog is the best' rhetoric. Good luck on your journey.
@BDTraining, I'm honestly surprised she wasn't lip licking with her fear side. Did you see any? I'm sorry if I missed it, but I didn't see her do it. I like that you pointed out the puppy-like bark though, that was the closest to a "I don't want to fight" that I saw when she was acting up
This is very similar to my collie x dalmatian. She's not a rescue, she was well socialised for the first year. Just very protective of us, "her" spaces, and fearful of dogs and men. She can make friends with medium-large calm dogs, but if they match her aggression or act like prey, she just goes for them. Very well behaved dog when there's no "threats" around
Typical BC - all bark and show and trying to herd everything lol unless there is a stick. My town living BC has been to a farm for sheep exposure. Shit himself the first time and couldn't figure out what kind of dog those sheep were. Second visit was better and he engaged but ran out of steam and the sheep were stubborn. We'll be going again as it is an great outlet for herding dogs. Saw 2 GSDs rocking the sheep moving. If you have a BC and can access a sheep farm, do it.

A well trained dog can teach so much more than humans..
The owners energy is the reason for all the dogs emotions. My dog does similar stuff with my wife. With me hes completly calm and well mannered.
And he hasnt bit my sleeve and dragged me to the ground since the first couple of months I had him-years ago now-Thanks, Beckman!)
My neighbor is talking about bringing him out in the woods and shooting him.
Joel is by far the best trainer I have found on the internet -
I can attest, his techniques work.
I wish every dog could have a friend like Prince in their lives. He's changing the world one dog at a time.
Whoo-hoo!! Nearly 400k!! Grats!!!
First time I've seen a reaction like that, that fear-barking but still lungeing at the other dog. Good boy Prince just took a look at her and went "meh" lol
Amazing job!
Yet another dog who will now have a happier, calmer life. gg Joel ,Prince & owners. 👍
Thank you God for people like this guy! in my community the dog would have gotten a whooping with a newspaper 😢 I have learned alot by watching a few of his videos
Great video!
Prince is just the embodiment of self confidence. Love his swag. 👍👍
That’s the prettiest border collie I’ve ever seen but Prince was the star of the show- his face and movements had me cracking up!
Like always, this was really interesting. Though not everyone has the privilege of having a dog like prince around to make these exercises. I`m so impressed with him.🥰
I'm sure you noticed, but the herding dog came out on her , look at her body language. She's working, with drive and eye. Hat's off to Prince good pub
you are very good trainer bro I love you
This dog reminds me of that black dog last week that jumped in the water and never stopped moving.
Love your videos, just wish they were sometimes longer 😂
The sad thing is, not only do animals need to be treated to this kind of desensitization, but humans need more interaction as well. Our world is suffering because people close themselves off to affection/love and it turns to fear
The reason for that it's because people take advantage of each other if they show kindness.
@MEH that's because kindness is shown as weakness. True kindness isn't taught, it's learned. People take advantage because they know nothing more than what they're taught in shitty environments (home/school/the streets)
Why do you have to bring humans into this.
Prince is such an impressive boy!!
great demonstration as always .
Prince is so good. He always knows what to do.
Joel mentions he cut out some footage where the dog was reacting to people. I could watch these videos all day, he could have left that bit in as far I am concerned.
Stunning Dobermann ❤
Really great educational video
I can't, i love border collies and this one in particular is so energic when she run it seems she could fly, it's incredible
Look how much better she got in such a short time!
Amazing strength of character Prince has.
I enjoyed this episode so much ❤❤❤❤
The trainer who said the dog should be put down should probably find a different line of work that a decision for the owner
Yes, it makes me wonder how many exasperated, struggling owners actually follow that advice. Sad.
Prince: "You don't pay me enough to put up with this AND dole out corrections".
Heads off yet again, Prince never fails to impress me
I am amazed at the talent you managed to unearth in prince.
The way he froze and held up his paw when she ran at him and barked 😭 That's the most "what the fuck" reaction I've seen in a dog
This little dog sleeps well that night.
I jusss...........Prince...he jusss.....WOW....that's a hell of a DOG!
Lmao that dog is the biggest spaz ive ever seen 😂
That dog is like the little kid we all saw in school who had an over protective mother.
I was amazed how quickly the dog, at the beginning, was SO "aggressive". Suddenly that which it was aggressive towards, is NOW holding the leash. Ok, I follow leash. 😳🤪
Awesome!
Princess just toying with this little dog now
Prince is cracking me up. Staying just out of reach ! Soon as Joel took the leash she wasn’t after him. Joel you must have the best “temperament”. Ever
Glad I wasn't the only one laughing at that! I just love Prince's personality! Such a goofball!!
Love it I can’t wait to train dogs too
I’m proud of myself because after a few minutes I said aloud “man she needs to get alpha rolled” and then you illustrated the alpha roll.
This is exactly what my unsocialized Rottweiler needs!!!
Good stuff!
I like that you pointed out the puppy-like bark though, that was the closest to a "I don't want to fight" that I saw when she was acting up
prince is so smart...he knew he would make things worse with his usual approach so he showed his soft side
Prince is like “I don’t get paid enough for this 💅🏽”
Typical BC - all bark and show and trying to herd everything lol unless there is a stick.
