  • How to replace the front rotors and pads on a Mazda CX-9 AWD. This is a 2015 model, so this applies to the first generation but a similar procedure can be applied to other generations as well as other SUV models from Mazda. #thewrenchmonkey #mazda #mazdacx9 #mechanic #brakesystems

    Tools/Supplies Needed:
    -ratchet set
    -17 and 19mm sockets
    -wire brush
    -file
    -new pads and rotors
    -brake cleaner
    -brake grease
    -interlocking pliers
    Procedure:
Safely elevate the vehicle and place a jack stand under it as a form of safety. The lug nuts are 21mm. Loosen the master cylinder reservoir cap. Compress the pistons in the caliper. This will make the disassembly much easier. Using a 17mm socket with a ratchet, loosen and remove the caliper bolts.
Pull the caliper off and hang it up. Using a 19 mm socket with a ratchet, remove the two caliper carrier bolts.
Finally removed the carrier with pads. Then remove the rotor. Remove the old pads from the carrier. Inspect the rubber boots for the slide pins, if they are cracked or broken, then replace them. They simply clip into a groove in the casting.
Remove the anti-rattle clips from the caliper carrier.
Next was cleaning the anti-rattle clip locations with a wire brush. We must ensure these are clean so the clips are installed easily and the pads do not bind.
In an extreme situation, you can use a file to remove any rust.
Next was cleaning the slide pins. For the one that was in good shape, simply use brake cleaner and a rag to remove any old grease and debris.
Using brake cleaner or brake wipes, clean the rotor to remove any oil residue. Ensure it is sufficiently cleaned otherwise this will cause issues with the pads.
This hub is already fairly clean, brake cleaner and a rag is all that's needed. If you do have rusting, use a wire brush to clean the surface. Then put the rotor in place.
Reinstall that rubber boot for the slide pin. Now the caliper carrier bracket can be reinstalled. Threadlocker can be applied to each of these bolts if you wish.
Tighten both of those 19 mm bolts. The torque specifications are 110 ft lbs or 149nm.
Install the anti-rattle clips, they only fit in one orientation. Ensure they are fully snapped in place, otherwise the brake pads can't be installed. There will be four in total.
Moving onto the brake pads, install the wear indicator on the one ear of the pad.
Now apply a light dab of grease to each of the ears.
Install the pad, and make sure it does move freely in the anti-rattle clips. If there's any binding, this will cause the pad to not release making it dragged.
Do the same for the opposite pad, apply grease to the ears, and then install.
The pistons do need to be pushed back into the caliper some more. So using the old brake pad and large locking pliers, compress the pistons.
    Now install the caliper.
Apply a light layer of grease to the slide pins. Not too much work causes the pin not to retract but enough where it provides good lubrication.
Do the same for the opposite pin. As mentioned earlier these are two different sizes so make sure you have them in the correct spot.
The torque specifications for these bolts are 85 ft lbs or 115nm.
Make sure the hub faces are clean and free of any debris. A wire brush can be used on the rotor side and then a brass wire brass on the back of the aluminum wheels.
Install the wheel, the torque specification for the lug nuts is 90 ft-lbs or 122 Newton meters.
Moving onto the passenger side, use the same process for replacement.

I just went to the link and filled out my vehicle info and brand preference but it gives me two different replacement options for both front and rear?

Where are your jack points? Can’t quite tell from the video. It appears you’re jacking somewhere behind the wheel.
