    Today’s question: Have you had to dismantle a layout for a relocation? How did it go and what did you learn from the process?

  • @stewarttrains98

    Best of luck on the move. Plan everything out ahead of the cuts. Better prep means better ease and minimum pain, putting it back in service.

      Thank you, I appreciate that! Moving can be a chore- but also exciting. I definitely plan on using more of a modular approach once again. I don’t plan on moving again for a very long, but one never knows with life! -Mike

      As I have no basement nor garage space for a permanent layout I’m constantly tearing down and setting up.

      Hi, Roger! Yes, I’m glad I can reuse some parts. Thankfully, I knew the house I was in wasn’t a long-term thing and had the ability to plan around that. I am planning on being in my new place for quite some time to come, but will still incorporate some of the construction techniques to make it semi-moveable down the line,
      should the need arise. -Mike

    Happy for you and your family Mike finding a new home , moving is always stressing , not to this time of year . Have a safe move , definitely pack your Model stuff better than you think , as things always shift in the truck or inevitably get dropped that I have learned... Great new space though for your new exciting adventures and a new life for the MKT .
    Cheers Mike , and we all hope to see you soon , back on the Main Track. Have a wonderful holiday an Merry Christmas to you and yours.

    I hope your move goes flawlessly. I have moved three layouts, with a stunning lack of success. In all three cases, I spent more time correcting problems associated with the dismantling, moving and reassembly than I would have spent starting over. Did I learn my lesson? I did not! My current layout is designed and built to come apart into movable sections. I hope NEVER to put that to the test! Best of luck!

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  11 месяцев назад

      Thank you! The relocation process was a lot of work but we got it done! As you mention, saving and reusing the parts may be easier said than done. I think my most recently-built sections will be fine. I was wanting to rebuild my older parts anyways and I’ve learned additional lessons since constructing those. We shall see! Regardless, I’m hoping to stay put for quite some time. -Mike

      I had to demolish two layouts, the second one had more salvage because of lessons learned. But the idea of doing all that precision work and then trashing it kept me out of the game (completely, I never "collected") for 40 years. Now in a module club (local standards, close to FreeMo, we have adapter units) and once a month, we run an EMPIRE. Which fits nicely in a corner until it's time to work on it, or run it.

      Hi, Dan! Awesome seeing you and getting to chat. It was a fun afternoon out there. The new layout space will be a lot more accommodating for visitors when we get to that point! I’ll have enough space now to squeeze in Sedalia and Green Ridge to Clinton and perhaps La Due (got to get the lake bridge in there). But, I may have to chop out some of the towns in between. Decision, decisions! I’ll keep you updated! -Mike

    Try using a fine tooth razor saw or Dremel to cut the track between modules. You will have to grip the rails tightly to prevent their being yanked out of the ties, but you should not need to redo the track. See "building a sectional layout" by Pelle K. Søeborg. If you don't own it, try your local library, that is where I got it along with most of my model railroading reference books. Great way to save money. I will never buy a book unless I need it 179 times a day or the library doesn't have it.

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  11 месяцев назад

      Hello! That’s a great tip! I will have to try that. It seems that would make it easier and cheaper, being able to save more of the track. I’ll hunt down Pelle’s book. I’ve enjoyed many of his articles over the years, but don’t have that particular book. I’m sure it’ll have some more good ideas for when I rebuild and expand! -Mike

    • @MainTrack
      @MainTrack  11 месяцев назад

      Hello! Thank you…the move was a lot of work (as they all are) but well worth it. The new layout space will be about 30 x 50. Even with the laundry room carved out, I’ll still have plenty of space to work with. It won’t be the world’s largest layout, but it will be plenty to keep me busy for years to come. I’ve already been at the drawing board drafting a plan! I hope to have an update sometime soon. -Mike
