Glad you like it brother!! I GENERALLY put 8-12 feet out on the board furthest from the boat with no weight. 20-30 feet out on board closet to the boat and somewhere in between on the middle board. I sometimes add a split shot to the middle or closest board but not always. This is a general rule, I may put only 4 feet behind if they are swinging at the boards or go as far as 40 ft behind.
How can a guy get a ( old school ) sticker or decal,I really like the whole thing ( the work your doing) .
Hi Mike, Gio here from Western Long Island sound. Looking forward to what might be your very first planer board cam (but not sure that will top the beard cam). Would be awesome to get a strike on video.
YES!! I will definitely be trying that! Beard cam is definitely tough to beat, but we can try! 🤣🤣🤣😂😂👍
Mike any chance of restocking the medium heavy striper rods on the catch the fever site?
They are really struggling to keep up with the demand lately because of the Coronavirus over seas. I’m waiting on some rods myself. Hopefully it will clear up soon.
Understandable thanks for letting me know, I have one and I love it need another for sure great rod!
Frankie Sheehan glad you like them brother!! Hopefully they will have things fixed. I have been recommending the MH so much that they were struggling to keep them in stock as it was. 😂
Mike, Great video as always. What transducers are you running? I have the same rig that your running and want to make sure I’m running the right stuff.
I have several for testing, but I’m am running two thru-hulls and an Active Imaging.

What speed do you pull the boards at?
It varies a lot. On points I slow to a crawl. .1-.3 mph. Between points or when I’m not marking fish or bait I’ll speed up to 1 .5 mph sometimes. I rarely set it and leave it. 👍👍
This really proves your point, they are shallow. I believe you one hundred percent now.
You know it brother!! 😁😁😁
If they're hitting the boards will top water baits work?
Absolutely! In fact I would normally be on the bow chucking some kind of plug to the banks. Even if they don’t hit the plug, they will often follow it and pick up a bait on a board.
You better believe it will. I live on this lake. Spooks. Thundersticks. Red fins. Lunker punkers. Anything like that. We have to leave certain places at night time sometimes because were tournaments fishing, and we don't won't to mess with them. This lake is full of em. Numbers. And bigs. Bite is on fire right now, and my damn boat is in shop!!!! Soon though sooon
Oooouuuuie! That would’ve been some good eating!
It look like lanier! Brown bridge road?
Smith Mountain
P.s the planer boards and floats can be a huge game changer for me where I'm at. ( Wherever that is??? LOL!)
Those are good eating fish! come fish Cumberland Reservoir We pull em 40 pounds all day long!!!
Steven Widdifield I’ve been there!! Incredible place!
What r those boards for ?
They pull the baits far away from the boat.
Is your tactic and location for catching shad the same in winter as it is during warmer season with cast net?
Slightly different but backs of creeks are good all year in mid to late day. Early in the am in winter they will deeper in the creek channel looking for warmer water. As the sun warms up the shallows they will move there.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Thank you, very helpful! Love the videos keep them coming! Moving back to nw arkansas soon to striper guide hope to be skilled like you eventually.
Why not set the hook with the j hooks?
Because the drag was already screaming. He hooked himself already. Once he’s hooked you run the risk of dropping the fish by yanking again.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS makes sense I’m trying to figure out this trolling deal
@@chrislayton5404 in most cases go with a good circle hook and don’t do anything 👍👍.
@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS thanks for the advice and love your videos!

walmart 1800 😂, they are actually hard to see in the video.
Cabin fever mike ?
HECK NO!! This was just a few days ago. I fish more this time of year than summer actually. You need to move down here 😜😜
GET IT ....were up in jersey with cabin fever cleaning rods an replacing hooks on top water an other striper / fishing gear. Just waiting
Joe Peverelle SOON! 😁
When they said “returns” what does that mean?
David Parker a RETURN is anything on the screen that isn’t white. Anything that the transducer detects is a return. 👍👍
Mike Smedley thanks man
I’m one of those guys that never use electronics to fish...
I catch stripers on the Hudson River....biggest 47 inches
Great fishing up there. 👍👍
Mike Smedley
Not a world record...
That’s a great fish !!!
We strictly use fresh caught herring chunk ....
My uncle looks outta place without me there. Just saying😂
😉😉😉
I've only done it in lakes. I didn't know side scan was even a thing 😳 MY WHOLE LIFE IS A LIE
Oh yeah. It’s a thing 😁😁👍👍
side scan, big boat, large reels, pricey braid .....i'll stick with my bank fishing.....nice fish tho...
👍
This video is not very informative on what types of lures to use or tackle tips. I wouldn't consider it a "how to video" at all! It's more of a watch us fish video.
I guess it’s all subjective. Some of the “absolutely best” kept secrets are revealed in this video.
thats cruel, using a live bait.
You need to cut your bangs
😂😂😂🤣🤣. I see what you did there!! 👍👍
Which reels are those?
