Paris Olympics: Winning Dominica’s first gold medal 'feels surreal'

- Dominica's first ever Olympic gold medallist, Thea Lafond-Gadson, has said winning the prize "feels surreal".
Speaking to Sky News the triple jumper said: "Third time's a charm. It didn't happen in Rio, it didn't happen in Tokyo but, boy did Paris love me and I loved it back."

Usually it is the athletes of the big Nations scoring nearly all of the medals, so it's good to see Thea win a Gold for the small Nation of Dominica.
So happy to see our Caribbean women take center stage. They are strong, eloquent, and classy. Great ambassadors. Love from St. Lucia.
But, but I don't think the word 'classy' is appropriate here. 'Classy' is a cop out word that has evolved with a divisive stamp. How about "accomplished', 'knowledgeable', 'sophisticated'.......................
@@AS-kx4bl I think classy is very appropriate since one can be accomplished and knowledgeable without carrying themself with class. These women carry themselves with grace and class.

Dominica and St Lucia should be bursting with Pride. These women have been exceptional. Many young caribbean girls are looking up to them and dreaming big.

In March, triple jumper Thea LaFond was the only representative of her tiny Caribbean nation, Dominica, at world indoors. She won the gold medal. Now at the Paris Olympics, LaFond is the only woman from her country competing in track and field. Again, she won gold. Only it was more than gold. It was the very first Olympic medal for Dominica. “My country’s name is Dominica (dah-min-EE-ka). We’re not Dominican Republic, so it’s pronounced differently,” LaFond said. “We are about roughly 70,000 people. Not 7 million. Not 70 million. Seventy thousand. And it is a gorgeous, gorgeous gem in the Caribbean near to Martinique and Guadeloupe. … Our neighbors also include St. Lucia, Barbados and, further south, Trinidad and Tobago. Our primary language is English. And now they have a gold medal.”

DOMINICA was discovered and named DOMINICA by Columbus. It's original.
The Dominican Republic was discovered also and named Santo Domingo the Spanish part of the island of Hispaniola but changed upon its independence to Dominican Republic. It shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.
