The “Manila” galleon was about trade with **China** . Many filipinos blow things out of proportion to put themselves and Philippines in the spotlight. It was more about China and India, and in reality the Philippines was but **one** area with Spanish rule in Asia. They always say they’re the “only” one. Not true at all. The Marianas, Guam, Carolinas, and ports in other Asian countries were all considered the East Indies.

    • @yungjoshx

      It is. Tagalog ≠ Filipino.
Growing up in the Philippines, we had to read books like El Filibusterismo, or Noli Me Tangere in high school. You can see there that it's pure Tagalog. Or at least that's the translation we had to read. (We obviously couldn't read in Spanish)
My point is, Filipino is not the same as Tagalog. An easy explanation for it is that Filipino is Tagalog + Other languages (Both from inside and outside the country)

It was after the arrival of the USA that Spanish was banned and schools were forced to learn English. That is why after 4 centuries of Spanish and Hispanic-American presence in the Philippines, although Spanish has been lost, there are so many Spanish surnames.
