Yes! Lots of Shakespeare's plays were based off of previous stories, poems and legends that he used transformatively, adding new dimensions of plot and characterisation. Sometimes he wouldn't re-tell an entire tale, but borrow key elements from multiple works to write one of his own. Romeo and Juliet, Othello, Macbeth, Hamlet and more, are examples of this. I haven't seen anyone talk about the fact that there is an entire section for original stories on ao3. So the app legitimately stole some authors work and profited off it.
I absolutely adore fanfiction, and while I do agree that some of it is pretty controversial, it’s been way too demonized. As a person who’s been reading and writing fanfiction for years (I have like 1000 bookmarks on ao3 oops), the concept alone (people coming together to write about something that inspires them to share their happiness with others etc) is amazing to me. But like this app?? Wasn’t really necessary?? You already said everything, I don’t have anything else to add haha but honestly I’m looking forwards to this it’s definitely something I’ve always wanted talked about and I can’t think of anyone better to do so >< (also, my immortal has been talked about so much already, so honestly it’d be cool to see someone talk about fallen equestria for a change)
I love you your channel has gone from you saying that you’ll never actually get a sponsor to you getting an established sponsor!! It’s so cool to see your channel growing, Amanda!!
One of the issues with this app isn't that they were profiting off of authors of AO3 but that the copyright issue between the ff author and og author. If an og author decided to, they could send ff authors cease and desist letters (like way back in late 90s early 00s) and sue because they are "supposedly" making money on og authors ideas and characters even though it isn't them but the app creator. That's why ppl were freaking out cause that could set up for AO3 being taken down and/or sued. I've been writing ff since I was 15. Reading and writing ff has made me a better reader and writer, and makes me want to write my own works eventually, but like you said, it's an escape and it makes me so happy that stumbled upon ff when I did.
Fallout Equestria legit looks kind of ... amazing? Dumb? From the description on its website: "The world was nearly wiped clean of life. A great cleansing; a magical spark struck by pony hooves quickly raged out of control. Megaspells rained from the skies. Entire lands were swallowed in flames and fell beneath the boiling oceans. Ponykind was almost extinguished, their spirits becoming part of the ambient radiation that blanketed the lands. A quiet darkness fell across the world... …But it was not, as some had predicted, the end of the world. Instead, the apocalypse was simply the prologue for another bloody chapter in pony history. In the early days, thousands were spared the horrors of the holocaust by taking refuge in enormous underground shelters known as Stables. But when they emerged, they had only the hell of the wastes to greet them. All except those in Stable Two. For on that fateful day when spellfire rained from the sky, the giant steel door of Stable Two swung closed, and never re-opened."
The problem with the app really is the running of ADs. The creator decided to make it, choose to do it and did it for what I believe two reasons. Love of fanfic and money. Hoping that with so many reading fanfic he could get a tidy sum with ads. Sadly he failed to think of the fandom and passion people have for this.
If you're gonna do a fanfiction series, you should read Dirty Laundry from the Voltron/Klance fandom! I feel like it really impacted fanfiction for that fandom, and even now it's still one of the holy grail fanfictions in that fandom
God this takes me back to high school. I used to write way too much Bubbline, Dark Matter, and probably Steven Universe fanfiction and post it on wattpad. But I don't think I marked them as completed stories, so they're probably lost to time at this point.
I'm really glad that you talked about this, I was one of the AO3 authors who had their works stolen and one of the first people to call them out on their bullshit. It was a major thing and a lot of the community was up in arms, and for good reason. I can only say this personally: I would've had NO problem with the app if it didn't have adds. It had my name on it and kept all of the indications that it was written by me. But the moment I learned that they were making money off of it, I was furious. I made my story because I love those characters and I love to write, and I wanted to share that with people in my fandom FOR FREE. I never ever wanted to make money, but this random person decides that they have the right to use my and many others works to make money for themselves. THAT'S what I was mad about. I was lucky that I had a few older writers around me to help coach me through the situation (mind you, their works had also been taken), but people were just broken over this. A lot of us put hours into our fics, maybe even days to weeks to years, but in just 5 minutes someone had taken them and made them for profit. So thank you, for bringing to light this issue that shook up a whole community of people for a few days.
I believe that fanfiction is okay, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. e.g by sexualising underage people or depicting real people in situations they feel uncomfortable with. Also don't post it anywhere except for fanfiction websites. I get uncomfortable just by reading some fanfiction titles.
Yeah, fanfics based on real people always creep me out. I have seen more than one coupling up Daniel Radcliffe and Tom Felton or Stephen Amell and Emily Bett Rickards. I mean, ship their characters all you want since they are fictional, but leave real life people out of your stories. It's just weird.
@@MamaMOB Yeah, I get what you're saying, and I respect those writers. However, it makes a lot of people uncomfortable to see smut posted on other websites that aren't fanfiction websites. And if real people are involved, that makes it even worse. It must feel absolutely awful to see the stuff people write about posted publicly on your twitter page or tumblr blog. A lot of this stuff includes sexualisation of children. I choose not to read it, but sometimes I'll be scrolling through reddit and see a post that contains sexualisation of some of my favourite characters and feel really uncomfortable. I understand you have to get the word out there, but it's inconsiderate not to think of other people who might really not want to see it.
shout out to stephenie meyer for not going after the author of fifty shades of grey and letting everyone continue making/reading fanfiction w out legislation lmao
Use all three websites every single day Edit: I want to thank the fanfic writers yo made my days sooooo much better, and in a way materialize my dreams. I will always love you all, for real tho
Its only fanfiction because large intellectual property holders like Disney and Warner Bros have fought to extend copyright on modern works indefinitely. There are hundreds of Sherlock Holmes pastiche novels written every year that aren't considered fanfiction. Ulysses, one of the most important works in the history of the English language would be considered fanfiction today. So would League of Extraordinary Gentleman a seminal comic book work owned by Warner Bros.
I have written fanfic since before I knew what it was officially called. What started out as a way to insert myself into my favorite fandoms grew into a creative exercise that I used to help me improve my writing. I always wrote fanfics where I tried to get the characters as close to what I saw on the screen while still putting my own twist on the story.
I am a writer who has written in fandoms I love to improve my writing skills and to create additional worlds and situations for characters I adore to explore. I agree that the main issue I had with the off-site app was that it was essentially taking works we wrote for free and profited from our hard and in many ways transformative work. Fanfiction is created for other fans to enjoy, and not for someone to grab up and utilize for their own profit. AO3 does great work to protect and empower the writers who appear on their site. I thoroughly am looking forward to your Fanfiction series if you are able to do it. Also if you ever need a helping hand at all, I'll happily volunteer. 🙂
I really love these investigative pieces. Have you every considered being a journalist? I think your professionalism and approach to research would lend well to being a journalist.
As someone who isn't a native English speaker, and has always struggled with classical teaching methods, FanFiction help me learn a whole ass language. Yes, I had some basic vocab knowledge but I went from being on below-average to "the only reason you don't have an A is cause you are not there always and you are bad at spelling". Yes, some tropes are highly problematic, and some Fanfitioncs fetishize sexuality. But it has so many positive impacts that we just don't talk about.
Long time fanfic writer. I'm used to the different opinions people have on fanfiction. When I heard about the app I was annoyed. I write my works for other people/fans to enjoy. Someone profiting off if it is truly gross and I'm glad the app was removed.
I've never written fanfiction, but I've read way too many in my lifetime and continue to do so (no shame). I'd love LOVE a series of you reviewing fanfiction that has had impact on a fandom! Pls do it.
I would actually really love a sort of fanfiction book club show, where you read a fanfiction and talk about it. It's combining three things I love; fanfiction, book reviews, and absolute cringe and i'm here for it.
Although I don't write fanfic, I am still a writer and I have a few thoughts about this whole idea. When it comes to fanfic, I think it's an integral part of the writing community, as most writers start by writing them before starting their own unique projects. In fact, a lot of fanfic writers have more creativity than some of the writers out there, and criticizing them for writing about something they love might kill their passion. That being said, the fact that an app creator is trying to profit off of someone else's work that they put out for free is very jerkish. I love seeing writers getting recognized for their works, and wouldn't mind seeing fanfic of my work on other sites. But that doesn't mean that someone can take my work, or anyone's work for that matter, put it on an app, slap multiple ads on it, and say they are doing it for the fans. It sounds like it's for profit and this was the easiest way to populate it with work to attract people
I feel as if no one should make money off of fanfic but it should be fine for people to post it. In that same idea if you post it online anybody can use it and do what they want with it as long as no profit is involved. The app was totally wrong for what it did so no questions about that but people can over react for sure. Similar situation I saw on a reddit a few weeks ago was somebody drawing a character from a phone game and just pummeling people with how he owned the art, wouldn't let you repost it, and would take legal action against you. Problem I had with it was that the character wasn't his so how could he ever even think a lawyer would take that case? Thanks for the vids.
I felt fear deep in my heart when I saw on twitter that you were making a fanfic video, but thank god this isn't just ripping apart fic for existing. Why did I doubt you? I really enjoyed this - most of the points you made apply to both, though it was actually the other app (collection of apps) that people were more up in arms over. Those had actual individual fics behind paywalls and was purely for profit, unlike pocket archive which really did just serve as an interface with a tip jar. I think it was 99 cents to unlock a fic within the app. Multiple stories of mine were on there, which doesn't bother me that much because I've been writing fic for over twenty years and am perfectly satisfied with that and don't plan to publish original stuff ever. But I know it bothered a lot of friends of mine that want to retain control over how their current writing is presented in case they need to remove adult themed things later on.
Fanfiction has been there for me multiple times when I was falling out of love with reading. My dad thinks that books are way too expensive so I don't get to buy them as often as I finish them (I live in a country where public libraries are not common and the books in my school library are either horrible or ones for children). These long periods of not being able to read new books has made it harder for me to remember why I love them in the first place, so when I discovered fanfiction it absolutley saved me. Fanfiction has been there for me for so long and I will continue to support it.
Hey just wanted to say , great video . I just subscribed and I am currently binge watching your videos . Love the intro , can't wait for your next video .
When I was young I wrote a MCR fic, but it was a horror story. Started with Frank being hunted by a creature in a forest then him ending up in a haunted abandoned asylum. I was tired of all the mushy love ones being posted to the board I posted it to LOL
There was something like this with asmr videos. An app was made that basically was reposting asmr videos without permission from the creators. It was eventually taken down as well.
I started writing a longer comment but I lost my train of thought because it's past midnight and I'm sleepy. All I really have to say is that as someone who only recently (December last year) posted their first fanfic, I feel icky about someone possibly having made money off of it. I started writing it on a whim to take a break from writing a novel, it's just for fun. I don't want to be associated with anything that could make original copyright holders go back to the old ways of considering fanworks to be unethical at best.
If you do that series with a popular work in a fandom, please do ,"A Splitting of The Mind." It is a MCR fanfic, I dont wanna say it's good or that it's bad, but is pretty popular in the MCR fandom. (Also this series called, "Unholyverse," is pretty popular and really worshipped a lot. Havent read it yet but everyone says it's pretty good)
oh hey, my copyright knowledge finally comes in handy! most fanfiction would be considered infringing because fanfiction is a derivative work. but you're right that if the work is transformative enough (like 50 shades of gray, which was originally twilight fanfiction), then it's fine. fanfiction is also ok if it's fair use, satire or parody, etc.
Ooo please do the reading fanfiction series, it sounds so fun and interesting! And if you do, please make it more than just After and My Immortal, i am so tired of those lol
I've heard about Fallout Equestria before, but never looked into it. Isn't it one of the longest/most impressive fanfics out there? Sidenote, I was once obsessed with Harry Potter fanfiction. Let's just say it introduced me to a whole new world of book genres. O____O
An interesting fit to have. I don't think the reader ever profited per se from fanfics, but using a tip model for a reader was doomed to be seen as such. If the app had been an add model / purchase no ads, it would have worked better, or perhaps if the app creator had been a better coder and included options for more sites to pull stories from. There are plenty of readers for this fanfic out there, and they profit from the content they read, and that will never change. Ah, Tumbler, all outrage, no arguments that hold water :P FYI, fanfic is good for Dyslexics, as each writer has a different sentence structure, and allows the reader to experience a better range of writing instead of just a large quantity. Good luck with the video, Tumbler rarely forgives those who disagree with its mobs 😏

does this mean you might have to read a 1D fanfic were the main character is sold to them?
Fake gf MC: I hate this job but I need the money for my family!
Sold MC: At least you had a choice in the matter my step dad sold me off and bought a car with the money!
Kidnapped MC: Wait they paid to have you here?!?
I hear that's more common on Wattpad
I would love to see a series of you reviewing fanfics! I would love to see you review More Than Human (it's about powerpuff girls and anyone who has kept up with ppg past the age of like 7 knows about it)
Lol i read that one
I haven't seen anyone talk about the fact that there is an entire section for original stories on ao3. So the app legitimately stole some authors work and profited off it.
Yup. I don't have the app, but I browse AO3 so..
you MUST make that series, like the fanfic with the most kudos from the biggest fandoms, like marvel and hp and supernatural
I consider AO3 my soulmate
Fanfiction, also known as my entire life. Also i really wanna know if my fanfic was on this app too or other apps.
You know how you can just tell when a RUclipsr is going to be big one day?
Fingers crossed 🤞
Fallout Equestria legit looks kind of ... amazing? Dumb?
From the description on its website:
"The world was nearly wiped clean of life.
For on that fateful day when spellfire rained from the sky, the giant steel door of Stable Two swung closed, and never re-opened."
it's hell
Stefan Halicki why does that actually sound cool wtf
I used to read a lot of Digimon fanfiction back in the day, and I’m not ashamed...I’m a little ashamed
Start with the classic My Immortal
Bad girl. Bad... outta this house.
*my name is enoby dark'ness de'mentia way, and I am **_goffic_*
I've heard a lot of people talk about my Immortal what is it?
Carmen Garcia The funniest Harry Potter fanfic ever. Definitely worth the read.
Gotta give Adam and Eve props for supporting small creators.
"I'm bad at endings" is the perfect bookend combined with your intro.
I lowkey thought I was the only one who remembered House of Anubis
Hell yes to a fanfiction series from you! You're so right, it's a perfect fit. Thanks for another interesting and informative video
God this takes me back to high school. I used to write way too much Bubbline, Dark Matter, and probably Steven Universe fanfiction and post it on wattpad. But I don't think I marked them as completed stories, so they're probably lost to time at this point.
I'm glad I found someone on another social media site that doesn't immediately dismissed Tumblr and realize there's actual reasons why people use it.
Damn 62.6k subs and sponsored!!!! Forking great. This is the best news of 2020.
when i'm early and she's sponsored
No, not my Alpha/Omega/Beta Dynamics coronavirus sickfic Jumin Han/Reader fanfiction!!
i love that this is both a roast, but reveals that you know what the alpha omega dynamics tag is
@@kurootsuki3326 I mean 👀
@@eminempreg hahaha
Aaaaayeeee look at her and her sponsor I’m so proud 🥺❤️
Use all three websites every single day
Edit: I want to thank the fanfic writers yo made my days sooooo much better, and in a way materialize my dreams.
I love your intro... been subbed for around a month and I still look forward to it
I really love these investigative pieces. Have you every considered being a journalist? I think your professionalism and approach to research would lend well to being a journalist.
I remember reading a house of anubus fan fiction when I was a kid. One of the first fan fictions I came across.
I love that Swell still has a tumblr. We need the deets!
please do Twist and Shout for the Supernatural fandom i’m convinced it was a fever dream
I'm so scared to reread it. What if it doesn't hold up? 7 years later I can still remember "I can Dig Elvis"
Yes! I was going to recommend this too! Now someone just needs to recommend a Dr. Who and a Sherlock fanfic and to complete the trifecta.
House of Anubis was great!
OMG YES you should make fanfic reviews!!!!!
YES tier list of fan fiction, from the ones that you really like to the ones that have scared you for life.
Pls do it.
Last time I was this early Swell was still on the line to tana con
I'm subbing in hopes of you actually doing that series you mentioned at the top of the video. That would be amazing
You are beautifully honest in your nerdiness and I appreciate it a lot.
I would actually really love a sort of fanfiction book club show, where you read a fanfiction and talk about it. It's combining three things I love; fanfiction, book reviews, and absolute cringe and i'm here for it.
I think I might’ve read your Percy Jackson and House of Anubis crossover fic. This is fine
YES!!! A NEW VIDEO I LOVE THIS WOMAN
omg house of anubis and percy jackson crossover fanfictiton is like my dream, you just described the basis of my personality
My Immortal has been beaten way past death at this point, but I’ve never heard of that other one. It would be nice to hear about it!
Basically the authors own the story and the plot, but not the characters.
I wrote an erotic FFF (Firefly Fan Fiction) where Mal went to town on Wash’s butt area. Was it on there? If so, I demand compensation!
It sounds like it's for profit and this was the easiest way to populate it with work to attract people
You could bring this to the attention of “Lawful Masses with Leonard French” featuring everyone’s favourite copyright attorney . . .
I can't read
When I was in middle school I uploaded jonas brothers fanfics to j-14 magazine's fan fic section 😅🤣
Hi your channel just blew up
Please review My Immortal PLEASE. Also congrats on getting sponsored!!!
I think I've seen your HoA fanfics omg 😭 I loved that show
it really only should be archive for our own, that makes the app and keeps it going
Hey I LOOOOVED
House of ANUBISSS AAA
(Places hand over eye) "Sibuna"
There was something like this with asmr videos. An app was made that basically was reposting asmr videos without permission from the creators. It was eventually taken down as well.
No joke I once wrote Harry Potter fanfic for an English class assignment. I even got a decent grade for it. 14 year old me really was something.
I love the intro it gets me every time
I saw the AO3 alert about this and the other one and immediately looked the app up to find it was gone, so I guess they did something right
you really just awoke memories I forgot I had of reading hamilton fanfiction in 9th grade off of ao3.
Cutest Intro ever... 😎😎
Every time you are like God I was a lonely teen preceded by something I’m like relatable I did that too
Wow another amazing super great video from absolutely the best channel on utube thank you keep up the good work
You are welcome
I would love the fanfic review thing
So happy to see the includes paid promotion label!!!
Percy Jackson has a rich tapestry of a universe, there is simply no need to pull him out for a crossover.
I wrote fanfics on wattpad for Attack on Titan. I certainly wouldn't want my works to be stolen, even if they are cringe and have aged like crap.
