I played both the GS Mini and Academy. Both of them are a joy to play, in terms of comfort, sound, and playability. However, the short scale length of GS Mini makes me miss more notes than on the Academy. In terms of sound, the Academy gives more power when strumming, and the GS Mini sounds sweeter when fingerpicking. Both of them are light weight and easy to carry around.
Thanks for sharing your experience in both guitars. 👍
It should to be clear, this is the GS Mini Mahogany. There are currently about 10 GS Mini models.

Bought both, kept the acadamy. Bevel, neck length and width, louder, and overall enjoyed playing more.
that's the plus
@@Edwin-Ewhich of these guitars has a wider neck? And is either neck thinner?
Exactly the comparison I was looking for as an entry level guitarist that has already outgrown my Yamaha APXT2 after a month of playing guitar and a year playing my Cordoba ukulele. Coming from a ukulele I wanted an easier to play, and smaller, guitar in the less than 1k price range. That GS-Mini sounds amazing...
Thank you!
I am glad that this video helps. Thanks for watching.
Excellent review! I’ve watched a bunch of reviews, particularly for these two guitars that I was considering a couple of years back. Your review is one of the best. I like your comfortable, gentle and sincere manner. You seem unbiased and the demos of many playing styles on both guitars was very helpful. I bought the Academy 12 and like it quite a lot but I was surprised that I preferred the sound of the GS Mini here. It seemed a little warmer and more complex. I suspect that the Sapele top of the GS made the difference. The A12 is an extremely comfortable guitar to hold and play and I prefer these qualities on it vs the GS which seemed a little too small for me. They’re both great, high quality small-bodied guitars. Thanks for your wonderful review!
Thanks. I agree with you observation on these two guitars.
I just bought an Academy 12e (same as the 12, only with a built-in electronic pickup). I was *extremely* surprised by how much smaller it was than the dreadnought I used to play. I mean, you read the spec's and you see that it's got a 3/4" shorter scale-length, and it's not as thick, and not as wide and not as long, but when you actually hold it in your hands, it's very surprising how much smaller it is than a dreadnought. It is *SO* much easier to get your arms around it and hold it properly. Wow -- what a difference!
I can't imagine how much smaller the GS Mini would feel.
Yes, it is very comfortable to play.
Awesome review Edwin. I have Academy 12 e and as a beginner I love playing it always. It sounds fantastic
Good choice! Enjoy playing!
GS mini just sounds so sweet to the ear!!
thanks for sharing
Two great guitars. I liked the gs mini with the fingerpicking and the strumming with the academy.
That's cool
Very good comparison….I own both (though I have the Academy 12 Nylon) and you are right. The Mini’s sound projection is greater to the academy. HOWEVER, as you made clear the Academy is much more comfortable b/c of the armrest feature. My advice if you’re just starting out is the academy. It is a fill length guitar. Once you can play this well, try the mini - though small it projects like a standard size. And much easier for traveling.
True. thanks for sharing
Just ordered the academy. I also have the gs mini spruce which is a great guitar. Looking forward to getting the academy!!
enjoy your guitars!
Excellent job. I have the GS Mini Mahogany and love the tone but I think I'm now considering adding the Academy 12. I think it's the perfect scale length and size not too small or too big.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Good choice.
Really nice, informative review of both of these models. I have been considering a GS mini lefty. I had not heard the Academy. It sounds really nice. Either way, it will be my first Taylor.
Thanks. Good luck on your first Taylor purchase
Thanks Edwin, great comparison. I’ve been trying to decide between these exact two guitars.
so, any preference at this point?
Looking at getting an Academy 12 - wanted a good comparison to listen to... Thanks for that 🤘😊🤘
thanks for watching. Good luck on your purchase!
I have both, a GS Mini and an Academy 10e. For me the Academy series sounds detailed but a little bright. The beveled armrest doesn't really make it comfy to play but it's a nice aesthetic. The GS Mini on the other hand sounds "fuller". The only drawback is that if you live in very dry or very humid areas, you might have a problem with the bridge lifting. I dunno, my first GS Mini had that prob. Anyway, I love them both guitars!
Thanks for sharing!
hi i’m about to either buy the gs mini or 12e academy, which would you choose?
I had a 10e for a while. I actually put Martin 10’s Lifespan 2.0 (red pack) and WHOAAHHHH. Big difference in tone and much better. It brought down a notch and reminded me of the GS that I had years ago as well.
For me the 12e that I have has a far more fuller sound than the GS Mini and a lot louder, i tried both of them some times. Actually, at least for me, the armrest makes it a little bit more comfortable to play... Maybe the 10e is different, idk
Edwin, thank you for the comparison. Very helpful to hear both. I have had two GS Mini's and while I appreciate the shorter scale length as I am just 5'0"" I did not find them comfortable. The strings are heavier, and the short scale somehow felt cramped. I have had several Taylor concert sized and just ordered an Academy 12 e. It sounded as though the GS mini had a deeper richer finger picked sound and the Academy 12 was brighter. But they do have different woods for their tops so that may have made some difference. Looking forward to receiving my Academy 12e.
enjoy your new Academy 12e!
I am. I love it!
Great video, much appreciated.
thank you!
Edwin, I am curious what gauge strings you have on the two guitars? I understand the GS mini comes with Medium gauge and the Academy with Light gauge strings. Perhaps that is why the GS mini had more volume? Or maybe it's because the GS has the Mahogany top. Can the Academy12 be strung with Mediums? I wish Taylor made an Academy 12 with a Mahogany Top. Thanks for the comparison video. I am currently trying to decide between these two exact guitars.
The Adademy has light gauge strings and GS mini has Medium. Maybe in the future when I change both with the same strings I will do again comparison.
im also considering both of these. ive tried out both at the store. as this will be my main guitar maybe the A12 night suit me better but they are both great. i have a preferance for a fuller sound
Thanks for sharing
I have the 12 e and I love it!
nice one!
Wish they would put an Arm Rest on Mini it would be brilliant then I like the sound of Mini better but love the size of the 12.
Indeed!
Excellent comparison Edwin. Thanks. I’m seriously looking at buying one of these two guitars. I only want it for playing at home on the couch. It would never be plugged in either so don’t need electronics.
I play a mixture of fingerstyle and moderately strummed material. Was originally thinking that a GS Mini would suit but not sure now after seeing reviews of the Academy 12.
Which of these two would be the best all rounder please? Thanks again
Ian
If you are just using it at home then Academy 12 suits better. GS Mini is small and great for travelling. Sound wise, I still think GS mini is fuller. So it really depends on your preference. Good luck!
@@Edwin-E yes just home use. Not for travelling or gigging. I love the looks of the Mini but a full size model May suit my needs better.
@@2134yanto Good luck on your purchase.
Hi! What have you decided? I too would like to buy it to play at home on the couch. Thanks so much
@@cocoichannel Hi. I decided to buy another classical guitar. Bought a Saers S9S Spruce. Good luck to you too
Very good review Edwin. I agree with you and also prefer the Academy.
Thanks. A12 is always the one I'm playing ever since I had it.
Thanks Edwin.
Welcome. Thanks for watching.
Hi! To play at home what do you recommend between the two? Thanks
I prefer the comfort of A12 but I like better the sound of GS Mini.
Edwin, which one sounds better? S6 Original or GS mini?
Hard to tell. But definitely Seagull S6 has bigger sound due to dreadnought body.
The mini atleast on my bose speaker connected to my phone, sounds better lil more tone and base whereas the acadamy sounds a touch more tinny ?
thanks for sharing your observation
@Edwin-E your welcome, nice guitars 💯
Sir. Which one do you recommend. 214ce plus or the gs mini koa plus. Thank u.
Completely different levels of guitars. For full size guitar 214ce is better, for travel one, GS mini is better. So, it depends on your requirement.
thanks for your video Edwin, but which guitar do you think is easier to play with stock strings, considering that the gs mini has mediums strings (0,13) and academy 12 has light strings (0,12)? And which one do you prefer to play now? Thank you very much :)
I am more comfortable with A12. I find the GS Mini too small and not comfortable on my shoulder. About the neck, they just feel the same. I never tried M strings on GS mini as I got this 2nd hand and already have light strings on.
@@Edwin-E Thank you Edwin! Other two question, do you like the live sound of the gs mahogany with light strings? And are these ligth strings Elixire PB? Thank you very much ❤
I own the GS Mini mahogany considered a travel guitar due to its size
you are right
Why not get an A 10 and a GS mini koa?
I hope to try these guitars one day!
