A third generation Irishman in the USA, was brought up with this amazing song that still brings a tear to my eye, and a memory of me' grandfather Patrick Murphy...bless his soul!
GREAT VERSION!!!! That youngster could really SING!!! Voice of an angel. I would love to hear her sing the theme (or whatever that wonderful song was that Celine Dion sang) to Titanic.
they need to bring this back to the AFL Grand Final, its tradition like when they sing Abide With Me before the FA Cup final, the entertainment has been rubbish without it, used to get the crowd goin, wished they had played it at this years game GO HAWKS!!!!!!
It's like their national folk song, and it's great! I wish we had something like it. The closest we have, which no one sings much any more, is Yankee Doodle. "He stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaroni". Try explaining that lyric. Our national anthem is The Star Spangled Banner and the national hymn is America the Beautiful, and don't forget that we have America and God Bless America too. But the Aussies have Advance Australia Fair and God Save the Queen also.
I love this song. I am from Germany and it is hard for me to follow the lyric. To much slang words but after all it is a great song even I don´t know what he is singing about.
John Robie go to your youthub searching and type waltzing matilda song with layric may you will find it. special of Judith Durham voice she song better
It’s from a Banjo Patterson poem. Based on an itinerant man who stole a sheep beside a creek (billabong). He didn’t want to be caught by the police so he drowned himself!! It could be based on true events.
i come from germany and we sang this song in our english lesson at school^^ and now is the whoul class almost every day in our english lesson singing this song xDD
I think it’s sad that the meaning of this song was lost. I am a Viet Nam combat veteran who saw death and dismemberment and was lucky enough to come back with all my body, so I sacrificed nothing. But I still tear up when I think of others who didn’t come back alive. Gio Linh, Dong Ha, Tam Ky, Kham Duc, Suicide Hill. Tip Top Alpha.

wow! i love this song, at 2:33 the backing vocal gives me goose-bumps its so good. Now maybe a stupid question, but im from netherlands and dont know this song, but is it the same as the theme song from the tv show secret valley?(yes that was on tv here) I think the lyrics from that fits the song better :p
i didn't know this was a Aussie national song. I remember sing this song in 4th grade, and up untill one day I was watching the olympics and I herd this song sang..
Rather different, but not a bad version. Hadn't been aware of this group before. Looked them up, and must say she looks lovelier here than in other pics.
I'm a Yank, friends and I will say that this young lady has a lovely voice, but.....after hearing Slim Dusty sing this I just can't see it being done any other way than the way he did it. It's your song, but we Yanks love it, too.
She forgot to sing that verse.... things happen in live performance, even in front of small audiences, much less one this size to make you nervous. Cut her some slack.
There was a black chick that sang this before the start of a Aussie Final game one year..She did a great job of it..but I can't find her anywhere.. Can anyone help me with her name.. I'm asking PLEASE..
Is this a politically correct version of the song? Listening to it one doesn't hear why the swagman decided to end his life by jumping into the billabong.
Im an american who grew up with this song and though she has a great voice, shes got nothing on Slim Dusty. I vote ZERO for this version. I never want to hear it sung like this.
The perfect example of someone who simply cant sing, shouldn'g sing, sings WAY out of tune, and has no sense of rhythm whatsoever...and as for those poor kids being made to flap around like that....the whole thing is a typical example of "modernism" gone quite mad!
ughhhh. the traditional melody has been distorted beyond belief. It has no character other than sounding like a poor man's australian/american country & western song. Take the waltzing matilda lyric away and it could be any of a zillion ugly poorly written now country songs. take it off and bury it! please!
So beautifull! Amazing music! God bless you!!! tks

I am Russian and also think they have a great talent in all of these... and this song is just so good! It is deep though the story looks so simple.
I too agree with Brad! This was so good!
they need to bring this back to the AFL Grand Final, its tradition like when they sing Abide With Me before the FA Cup final, the entertainment has been rubbish without it, used to get the crowd goin, wished they had played it at this years game GO HAWKS!!!!!!

And the words are changed/left out again. Where's "the soldiers, one, two, three?"
She forgot to sing that verse.... things happen in live performance, even in front of small audiences, much less one this size to make you nervous. Cut her some slack.
I believe you! :>)
I'll never learn: Gerry's cut on this song is on RUclips.
@treetoptop ..or did it?
@cvcoco I don't mind this but SH1t Slim DID sing this. Good on ya mate!
in my opinion the best version is by Tom Waits....
yes
Amazing voice, but, Is Aus a self Policing State now........? What happened to the Squatter on his Thoroughbred and the Troopers.
If I ever give birth to two girls I would name them Matilda (after this song) and Bonnie (after celtic song Loch Lomond). Simple and genuine song.
great version, but i love version by John Harley Weston
Thats Australia I very like.
@Matilda0307 He named everything Matilda. lol
Check out the song and video " Voices That Care." It will blow you away.
@boredtyper an angel hey? ;-)
2:39 I don't know that Opa Gangnam Style came to watch this game :D
CARN THE CROWZ
This version sounds too much mainstream.. >
this sort of version wrecks he feel of the song totally, over produced sung rediculously by thee wrong singer. What next? Glee singing it?
There was a black chick that sang this before the start of a Aussie Final game one year..She did a great job of it..but I can't find her anywhere..
Can anyone help me with her name.. I'm asking PLEASE..
at 1:06 her skirt blows up
5/10
makes me want to eat a wallaby
and what makes you a music expert, Id like to see sing it in a stadium
nice song ausies sang it during boer war
Who gives a.... The Bombers won and The Hawks were no where near there. Overseas PNG learning how to win the 2008 GF AGAINST ALL ODDS.

She, completely flucked it up! Its not a pop song!
The perfect example of someone who simply cant sing, shouldn'g sing, sings WAY out of tune, and has no sense of rhythm whatsoever...and as for those poor kids being made to flap around like that....the whole thing is a typical example of "modernism" gone quite mad!
Good, but not as good as Slim Dusty!
Having listened to lots of music. Her voice is totally bland.
ughhhh. the traditional melody has been distorted beyond belief.
It has no character other than sounding like a poor man's australian/american country & western song.
Take the waltzing matilda lyric away and it could be any of a zillion ugly poorly written now country songs. take it off and bury it! please!
Rude and unnecessary, sorry.
Nope, she's trying to hard for a folk song like this. Generic sounding.
I'm not a singer. But her rendition stinks.
@didaho you are a bad person!!
