  • #Allelujah - In Cinemas 17 March
ALLELUJAH is a warm, humorous, and deeply moving story about surviving old age. When the geriatric ward in a small Yorkshire hospital is threatened with closure, the hospital decides to fight back.
ALLELUJAH celebrates the spirit of the elderly patients whilst paying tribute to the deep humanity of the medical staff battling with limited resources and ever-growing demand.
Directed by Richard Eyre (Notes on Scandal, Iris) from a screenplay by Heidi Thomas (Call the Midwife, Cranford) based on the stage play by Alan Bennett (The Madness of King George, The Lady in The Van), ALLELUJAH features a powerhouse cast led by Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) and newcomer Bally Gill, supported by Judi Dench (Notes on A Scandal, Iris), Derek Jacobi (I Claudius, Frasier), David Bradley (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones), Russell Tovey (The History Boys) and Julia McKenzie (Cranford, Marple).

I do hope this reflects reality rather than a sanitized version of care. However I love AB's writing so shall hope for the best and that the research is also spot on. Been an unpaid carer for 16 years and while I wouldn't swap the emotional benefit of being with my loved one I would trade the pressure, stress and drain on personal resources caused by dire communication, dangerous care companies and some of their personnel (they are not all angels), a lack of support both emotional and financial but above all practical.

It's probably a whitewash... I think care workers in homes were treated abysmally during the lockdowns, enforced vaccination, etc. The homes were treated as dumping grounds for the elderly, shameful, I bet AB will not go near the reality.
