  • #TheGreatEscaper - In Cinemas Now
In the summer of 2014, Bernard Jordan (Michael Caine) made global headlines. He had staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades at the D-Day Landings 70th anniversary.
It was a story that captured the imagination of the world as Bernie embodied the defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. But of course, it wasn’t the whole story. It was an inspirational but sanitised retelling of one man’s need to come to terms with the lasting trauma of war.
Bernie’s adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene (Glenda Jackson) - THE GREAT ESCAPER celebrates their enduring love but always with an eye to the lessons we might learn from the Greatest Generation.

I was there in 2014. I work as a Merchant Marine, and had just gotten off of a cable-laying ship in Cornwall. Collected my paycheck, and took the ferry over and spent an amazing week in Normandy for the 70th Anniversary.
This was the same year that the WW2 Vet Bernard Jordan 'escaped' out of his nursing home and fled to France for the celebrations. I cannot watch this trailer without tearing up.
I've been to 70 countries, 49 states, and all 7 continents. Normandy for D-Day was the best ever. I still tear up when I think about the time i spent there.

Finally a film with substance and a story. Sir Michael Caine is a great actor. In an age where films are only about violence, CGI or comedy, it's great to see a film with a story, content and a purpose.

I just watched this movie.... as I am a huge fan of Michael Caine. This would be the first time I have ever called a movie Beautiful....
As a 60 year old, never been involved in any wars, but totally respect my elders and those that took partin WW2. This movie is a Beautiful movie. Absolutely brilliant acting by Sir Michael and Glenda Jackson... it most certainly made me cry. Hats off to all involved. We souldnever forget those souls of the war. RIP.

I met a WWII vet at the war museum in Ottawa Ontario. Being the young kid I was I had so many questions. Some of which couldn’t be answered, however I brought up a quote that I read from CoD 3 which I think went “every war is a civil war, as we are all brothers and sisters.”
He smiled and said “every year, for one day me and my comrades have dinner with German who we fought against on the same battlefields. We always tell them that they put up a damn good fight.”
This was many years ago, hitting 30 now. I hope that vet is doing well.

    THE GREAT ESCAPER...
In time to come this film will become an understated Classic. Personally I believe it to be a true classic of cinema-Story-telling, it is both a magnificent tribute to both Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson - a fitting memory of these gifted actors, and the art of underplaying their role to fulfil the characters they are playing. A superb final role for such wonderful talent.
It is also a fantastic tribute to the Finest Generations this Nation will ever produce. From and through the brutality of a generation of the First World War, through and to the Finest Generation of World War Two. This film is a tribute to the no-nonsense, humorous, yet stoic qualities of 'grin and bare it' generation - born of communities that sacrificed and suffered 1939-1945; after their parents had been through the hell of the 'Great War 1914-1918... with all of it horror over spilling into their early years.
This film is a true diamond in the rough, a real gem, a very fitting tribute a Generation - A Forgotten Britain; a Britain now soured by selfish profiteering and Greed a Britain were very few actually WILL Remember Them.
A Gentle Story of Love, Loyalty, & Steadfastness.

That generation understood the value of life because they saw the horrors of war. "What a waste". Indeed. And keeps happening again, and again, and again. Humans don't learn.

Of course, the accepted premise that a person with capacity and free will has to 'escape' an aged care facility just shows how appalling the rights and dignity of older citizens is abused in our society.

He didnt escape. The care home staff were just concerned when he came back. because their job is to... care

Bernie didn't have to escape. He was competent to make his own way to France, and come back. It makes a better story that he "escaped."
