    Those scallops are making me hungry! I think you can harvest them up north near Comox area. From what I heard from a friends, sister's, cousin is that you have to get your knife in before they close to tight.

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  3 года назад

      Yeah, that's one of the few places I've seen them open too. Usually close to oyster farms as they do more rigorous testing. And that's one method! Or pry the shell off the rock.

  • @kenmorrill3774
    @kenmorrill3774 3 года назад +1

    Sad to see the urchin problem is even up north. Here in Ca and Or we can no longer dive for any species of abalone. Our red abalone fishery will not likely reopen for thirty to forty years at best. Long after I'm gone! The world is changing, and not for the best - enjoy what you still can.

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  3 года назад +1

      Yeah man, it really suck. And I feel like bit enough is being done. I'd love to go smash up urchin, even though it wouldn't do much in the grand scheme, but at least it's something. Currently our regs don't permit it and there doesn't seem to much talk about making it happen. I hope the starfish waste syndrome stays at pay it that will be game over for the kelp.

    • @kenmorrill3774
      @kenmorrill3774 3 года назад +1

      @@PNWSamson Unfortunately, the urchins live for decades, can live without food long after everything else has died off, and they have no value to a commercial fishery. Unless there is a comeback of the starfish who prey on them the bottom will continue to look like a moonscape covered with urchins.

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  3 года назад

      Yeah man, super depressing. And the kelp disappearing will just be the beginning. I'm pretty pessimistic when it comes to the ocean though. I'd love to look at the bright side if there was one... I think we are witnessing the beginning to the end and no one seems to care. But God forbid I spear a fish right?

    Another great video! I can see why you like that last spot, so much diversity! The change in the islands off Egmont is stunning. Last time I was there you could barely see the bottom because of the kelp, it's sad that it's become another urchin barren!

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  3 года назад +1

      Yeah man, pretty sad. You were the diver I was referring to BTW incase you didn't put that together lol. Still a nice spot, I wish we were encouraged/aloud to go and smash them all to bits.

      @@emeraldsky8009 no sweat man. I'm still happy we got to check it out. It's really sickening what's happening around our coast. Hopefully the starfish waste syndrome stays at bay. Another flare up could take out the small remaining sunstar populations. That's a scary thought...

    Is there any place that I can go snorkeling in lower mainland?( without taking ferry) I went to whytecliff and water was so murky.

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  3 года назад +1

      Visibility around the lower mainland is hit and miss. Around the Tsawwassen ferry terminal, close to the long term parking facing the breakwater is a fun spot to snorkel. Also, if you hike down 1001 step beach in whiterock and turn left and walk out to Kwomais Point, that's a great spot. Kwomais Point is my favorite local snorkel. Once the boarder opens, Lily Point in Port Roberts is lots of fun.

    • @PNWSamson
      @PNWSamson  2 года назад +1

      Sunshine coast? You'd have to drive to the horseshoe Bay berry which is roughly an hour from Whistler. The ferry is 45 mins and from there about an hour to Egmont. The second spot is on Vancouver islands west coast and that would take roughly 5-6 hours to reach from Whistler.
