I see a market here. There are many people who buy iPads believing that they like almost every android tablet will have gps of some kind on board. Unfortunately the only iPads that have gps are the cell/lte models. However if someone were to make a case that had a GPS system built in to it and you plugged the case in to the iPad. You could charge the iPad with out having to remove it from the case and it always be connected to the GPS circuit in the case. They could also have another case with the GPS and a battery, depending on size, the battery could double or triple the user’s use time. I know if something like this were available in a folio type case. I would buy it for at last half of the 8 iPads I own. And depending on how well it worked I might buy it for all. An add on such as this would add functionality to older devices and greatly extend the battery and would be swappable between devices. It would however have to be a nice looking case. Say... taking a Q from the Otterbox Strada series. Said cover would also be much cheaper than buying another iPad just to get GPS.
OMG DUDE THANKS SO MUCH. I recentrly purchased myself a wifi-only ipad because im using it for my truck navigation, and it was a bummer it doesnt have GPS! What's even better, i also use primarily WAze for my route planning, so this video was definitely a relief! Thank you
Quick qn: If the GPS unit is providing GPS why did you need to use your phone to get a wifi hotspot? Was it just to get the route defined? I will be on a hiking trail with no data signal so I was gonna download a trail and wanted to make sure I would have GPS to navigate. Can you advise? Thanks
I wondered the same thing for a sec there. I think that he connected the iphone in order to be connected for map coverage and that sort of thing. If you have a downloaded map, for instance, then no need. That's how i reckoned at least. Cheers.
This is PRESACTLY what I am looking for with my Ipad Mini 5 (2019 wifi only) model. I've tried different approaches to try and get the Waze app working on the ipad, but (of course) to no avail - or working poorly. Yes, "buyer's remorse" for not buying the cellular model. And then... (good ol' Google) along comes the Bad Elf GPS and also (lo and behold) all my (I'm hesistant to buy this thing) questions answered "rat cheer." Thanx DasCayman, I will be using your provided link to purchase this Bad Boy, err... Elf.
This means you are still not able to navigate without a mobile network available . Are there downloadable maps available so navigation in areas with no cellular connection is possible ?
Wifi iPad models use Access Points (APs) to infer your location. Accurate enough to get around, but still not 100%. That being said, if you have the ability to, using a hotspot, is essentially a dedicated AP so as long as you have a data connection over the hotspot, your iPad will be able to cache your route, and keep up with you.
Please answer my question anyone. If i had wifi only ipad with no gps that means i cant locate ipad position with find my ipad? Or it cant be use google map for direction? Doesnt it?
I tried today. There is no GPS receiver built-in with the wifi only iPad. If you are driving a car you won't get instant update of your location. Useless.
Excelent video! Any option to use it with the survivor case? I want to use my ipad as a removable media player in my car, and I wouldn't like to take the case off.
Does Siri talk you through a trip as she does with a data package?Because when using my pad with WiFi it shows me a route but I have to stroll through to find out next exit/turn.If it waits 10 miles until my exit it won’t count down BUT it shows me steadily moving on the map
I bought one thinking that an expensive wifi tablet was equiped. (My 7" nexus tablet was...). What a bad surprise ! Well next time, i'll check with more attention !
not all Android tablets are equiped either...Galaxy Samsung Tab S2 that i have comes with Wi-Fi and Cellular options as well...with the Cell one being more expensive...same deal...has to have Cellular in order to have the GPS chip
As a rule, any app that uses location services will accept our data stream due to the way we pass it forward. We are sharing to the operating system and not to the app directly. This level of abstraction makes for universal compatibility. If the app is on the App Store and uses location services, it will automatically be fed the location from any connected Bad Elf GPS
NO, Unless your are using LTE version iPad. If you were using LTE version iPad, there wasn't any need to go through all trouble to get third party device connected with WIFI version iPad. I prefer Apple Maps as well, so I'll skip third party device.
This was probably a good idea a few years ago. Today you could buy a gps ipad without a data contract. Also these attachments are expensive and annoying to drag along.
Because even using hotspot, ipad's google maps and so one doesn't work. You need both for real time google maps: gps (which basic ipad don't have, only wifi+cellular one model) and internet.
But that did not do nothing because you connected to your phone hot spot wifi and got signal, of course you going to get directions for Waze even if that device is not plugged in on ipad.

you could get an android tablet. most versions of those have gps. wifi only or lte doesnt matter.
