"Built not bought" is this 1940 Chevy pickup owner's motto | Why I Drive #34

- Curtis Vicknair is the patron saint of basketcase Craigslist project cars. Such was the case for his patina'd 1940 Chevrolet pickup which was little more than a grab bag of parts, bolts, and metal when he purchased it on Facebook Marketplace. "Building something yourself, there's a lot of pride in it," says Vicknair. "It's just that pride that you built something, and now you're driving it down the road. You can't go buy a new car and have that feeling."

Thanks Hagerty for these examples of what can be driven and insured .
Damn that motor sounds good.
That's what's we are missing nowadays, that feeling you get from driving a car we need more people like this guy!!
the exhaust sound of this car feels like a punch each ignition
Glass packs suck.
@@joshuagibson2520 i love them man. Sounds smoother as it ages
This is the definition of a hobby.
I wish this video was longer, that is beautifull, not just the ride, the story too. 👍
Definitely
That tire chirp when shifting gears, just amazing.
He's not even pushing it either!
Your right my friend, that’s the way to go. Old school hot rod. 👍
Dream to have a garage like him. A wooden garage away from city, restoring vintage/classics with friends, and preserving the original paintor keeping the rust as it is, building a hot rod with with available parts in backyard. Nowadays everyone prefer new flasshy paint and big size chrome wheels. Very few people like him. Glad, my choice is same. 😂❤️
Lovely video, hagerty.
This truck was built when trucks were real trucks, Awesome truck and video!!!
The truck is awesome but so is Curtis!
Awesome video and a killer Chevy truck. I love it! 👍
Based on accent alone, I'd say this man also owns a pirogue.
Definitely from down the bayou. Hell it was on both sides of the road lol
He has the best voice!
Awesome stuff mate, what a chilled out genuine sounding car guy.
This gentleman had class
Now thats the way it should be.....
I have built and I have bought. I'm proud of what I've built, and I'm proud of what I've bought.
I like the original windshield better but everyone has there own taste. Love the truck. I have 2 pickups and 1 long box panel truck 41-46.
Brousing around on facebook....isnt exactly old school!
I own a 1941 Chevy truck and I don't think the 1940 has that grill. The grill on my 41' is exactly like the one in the video but 41' was the first year for that grill. Even the fenders look different on that truck. Something fishy😮
I drive by Tesla owners as loud as I can…so they can hear me hurt the environment.
I have a 66 cutlass that i put a 455 olds engine. I like to uncap the headers when i cruise in town.
Love it!!! that truck has character.
I got a big scare last week, I went to the auto parts store a few weeks ago and asked for some points for a 67 vette, 3 counter people didn't know what I was asking for!
Hotrodding
I hear you brother and I would be in your shoes had I not gotten a job with the Telephone Company. I did go to Denver Automotive and Diesel in 1971. I really have always loved cars and finally at 68 I have a 2008 Mustang Bullitt and NEVER turn on the radio. It makes me smile to drive . I am right there with you on old school and working on my cars. I have had many. 1949 Diamond T, 62 Pontiac Tempest, 65 Rambler 550, 72 Gremlin, 1955 big window Chevy Pickup. I DO LOVE PATINA !!
or the howl of that engine tearing it's way to 6500 rpm.
@@crazeguy26 With the FR500 Mufflers
Sounds good
I’m not a car guy much. I still follow your channel. This video was amazing. Thanks for making it.
That's a 41-46 or47
Who the hell thumbs downs this video? Nothing to dislike.
Thumbs down are from; Woke, Soy Latte' drinking, sjw's still living in their momma's basement after getting a diversity degree...
Man the video and audio guys were great. I couldn’t believe it was me
Living The Dream.
This guy....the love of the car.. His built car.. Love it. Need more guys like him.
What a legend. More follow up videos please! Shed tour, rides in some of those other beasts....
Another great video and I can definitely relate. With the help of a friend, I restored a 1968 Charger R/T at the beginning of the 1980’s. It took several months but I finished and drove it to High School. Like many people, Life happened and off it went putting that dream into extreme hibernation. Fast forward a career and what seems a lifetime ago and I now have an all original 1968 Dodge Coronet (First year of the Super Bee) in my garage awaiting a new power train and several other updates. I spent all of last summer building myself a shop but it’s near completion now and I’m about to resurrect that mopar muscle dream again.
And please post the soundtracks of the videos.
😀 Lovely
This is absolutely wonderful. Very nicely patinated and sounds great!
Curtis will you be my friend?
Saw that Yamaha 650 in the shop.....good memories.
They were nice bikes.
I want my ol' '60 Apache10 back. Out of all the vehicles I have had...it was the one that gives me the most grins when I remember it. It wasn't fast...it wasn't prettiest, it wasn't nothing but a pickup truck and I could go just about anywhere with it and even some places a 4x4 wouldn't go...no joke. That ol' truck was the best!
That truck is not a 1940 !! More like 41 to 46
This guy must be my long, lost southern brother
The anti car payment here folks
Awesome ⭐👍🏻
When I was ten years old (1960), my dad bought a barn -find 1946 Chevy pickup. I learned to drive in it and it was my first experience at wrenching. When I saw your pickup, I thought it might not be a ‘40 so I looked up pics of a 1940. I loved your video but it sure looks like a ‘46.
Front end is not a 40.
Great video..
That. Truck. Is. Bad. Ass
That front end is not a 1940.
The truck appears to be a '41 to '46 model year, or at least that's what the front clip tells me. To my knowledge no pickups were built during '43 and '44 and '45's were only built in the fall after the end of WW2. These were called the Art Deco Design and were sold into early '47 when the Advanced Design was offered. The Advanced Design lasted until mid 1955. I'm not sure if the '41-'46 fenders hood and grille were interchangeable with the '39-40. I'd be interested to know. I built a '46, similarly equipped and similar in appearance. Nice truck!
Yes it kinda confusing, but it might of been a 3/4 ton, it had cab lights
39 / 40 front fenders are the same 39 rear are wider ( narrower bed ) 40 rears are same as 41-46. 41- 46 fronts are same.
@@joepacheco4038 Good to know. Thanks
Love your truck reminds me of my dad's truck his was a 46 we stripped it to the frame and rebuilt it with an olds 350 and turbo 400 trans
That truck is 🔥🔥🔥
Yupp
I have No Words?
my favorit Chevy Truck!
living the lifestyle
we dream of!
keeping it real!
thanks man!
💯💯💯
This is not a 1940 ! At best it is a 41
Super cool truck😊👌
My kind of guy. I been this way most of my life also!!!
Car looks and sounds great, thanks for creating this video Hagerty!
So amazing
Looks real good. 👍
Love it
Curtis, you need to write a book.
Now let's see a video on that monster with the bed mounted turbo...
That's a sunday driver, this is a video about his daily.
This sound!
sweet
Yeah that baby don’t need any paint. 😎👍🇨🇦
I feel him!! I love the game too just living and building is lifestyle
Cool truck brother I have the same love for my classic cars may God let you enjoy them for as long as you can
Nice truck man. I have a ‘46 Chevy truck with originals 16”wheels, tires, & tubes. I like your wheels & tires. What size rims & tires are you running. I want to put on wider radial tires but keep the original look. All info would be helpful. Thanks.
Much respect to him. Unfortunately I don’t think I work with my hands well enough to complete a job like this.
Buy one and try. if you mess something up fix it and try again. that's what great about cars this old. You can't kill em, you can dent em, but dents come out easy.
Yes Sir 😃, 2nd gear chirp, “MaMa going for test drive” “Yes I have my phone” dependable horse power and the comforts you need. Put together secure and right and the satisfaction of knowing inside it’s gonna be alright & secure
I seen a grill like that and it was a one off Cadillac and the headlights were in the grill and they worked fine.
I see these huge new 4 door trucks with a tannou cover on a 4.5 foot bed. They would never put rock or wood chips in it. Maybe groceries. What a waste. I'll keep my 2007 Silverado classic v6, Manuel 5 speed with an 8 foot bed as long as I can.
Love it, asking what transmission does he have
Probably a TH350 or TH400 behind the SBC.
700R4!!
Perfect truck!!!
Awesome, love the whole package! Hv a question about the paint, when you say u rub it with oil is that like lindseed oil?
These days most people would look down on you if you drove an old, rusty car, they can't even wrap their head around not having their creature comforts. But I guess not everyone gets it.
Oh, one more thing, My 46 looked like yours. Some call grill the “Wurlitzer” style.
Very like the petrolicious films. Naughty Hagerty!
No le entiendo pero q hermosa camioneta lo mejor de lo mejor..ese sonido del motor hermoso...lo máximo felicidades saludos desde los Altos de Chiapas..
much respect to this man!!!
This is the most black guy sounding white guy in existence, just something funny i picked up on, sweet ride
cool truck i would love to have something like this its in really good shape for what it is and it sounds mean, very awesome video, also whats the soundtrack thats used at the beginning of the video it sounds really good.
Love it I drive a little newr with a 1973 Chevy C10.....
Love this - thank you for taking care of the finer things in life
Not a Che vo lay. Would love to see the original dash and steering wheel. You keep the outside original and authentic. Why not the inside?
The guy just made my day!
Turned out nice , The old paint might hold up better if there is a Matt flat Or a Satin coat of clear paint over the old original paint .
I don’t have heated seats or a back up camera in your 40 pick up damn how bout dat🤔
That's the 41-47 AK Series truck, not a 40
Oooh yes... the sound of that engine makes my motor hum. Gimme a ride!
I agree. 100% looks just perfect.
He's a luddite. Not a terrible thing.
que chingon!
THAT DON'T MAKE THEM LIKE THEY USED TOO...INTELLIGENT OL HEADS!
Just turned up the volume so I could hear the engine.
Well done,Curtis your inspiration to us all
Very beatifull truck 👍👍👍
Dang maing, that's about the sweetest lookin ol Chevy pickup I've seen. Great job!!!
When I bought my 1940 chev pu the said it was a 39 their us a different. Just like this truck it's a 42 it's all in the grill
39 had 17 bars 40 has 16 bars ser # 39 starts with JC 40 ser# start with KC
That dude looks familiar.
عالی عالی خیلی عالی
I like them. I like the old school look.
This truck is so raw I love it!
My favorite Chevy truck
