- John Lithgow almost ended up playing the iconic television character of Frasier Crane. He turned down the role because he didn’t like the idea of starring in a sitcom, but hear him tell the story of how he was later to convinced to play alien in disguise Dr. Dick Solomon from NBC’s 3rd Rock from the Sun.
I can't imagine someone else as Dick Salomon ;) He's the best :) very talented actor!
Same, also can't imagine Frasier without Kelsey. It's awesome how it all turned out.
Klaudia nobody else has the right voice for it.
Lithgow has the voice, The accent and the mannerisms
When John Cleese guested then he showed himself a pretty good alien. That show was as close to monty python as american television ever got.
He killed it in 3rd Rock. He also amazed me in drama with Dexter. I am currently re-watching all of 3rd Rock again. I just LOVE him in that.
Shadow Heart . Me too I have 3rd Rock on DVD
@@ericduggan5798 is Lithgow not a fan of sitcoms?. Or do they just not interest him?
the most underrated sitcom ever, doesn't get the love or recognition it deserves
No one could replace John Lithgow! He is absolutely irreplaceable and the role is written for him!
That entire cast was soooo perfectly cast. GREAT!!!
And so glad he did! 3rd Rock is my favorite comedy show of all time
It a show you can re watch over and over. It never loses its spark
My favorite too. 😊
John Lithgow is a brilliant actor. Now add comedy to his repertoire. Double threat.
Triple: can play various musical instruments and sing. :)
He really only was a threat in Dexter.
He’s also an illustrator and children’s book writer
“Now…”? 3rd Rock started in ‘96.
@@rgrndu Google the word now. You'll see that it has many uses.
We are all glad that you didn't turned it down, Mr. Lithgow. It wouldn't be same without you. 😎
True story: I was at my buddy’s house practicing our rock songs for our band. We were writing material and working on some material. My friends mother was in the living room and kept laughing and laughing. So I went in there and asked, “What’s so funny?”
She said, “This 3rd rock show” So I took an interest and watch it with her. I believe it was the episode where Dick painted his body red for the football game and had a giant foam finger.
That was freaking hilarious! I’ve been hooked ever since. Thank you Dick Solomon! You were so funny in your pursuit of Mary. 💙
John Lithgow, You are the best... ESPECIALLY at comedy in my opinion...
Brilliant actor on a brilliant show, although it's no secret he was asked to play Frasier. I remember that being mentioned in a Frasier documentary 20 years ago.
I was always wondering how John Lithgow - one of the greatest most decorated stage and movie actors ever end up on a silly comedy show and make it a classic lol
I love this actor!!!! Is my favourite. Lord Farquaad for ever!
Same here. But his political view today is *thumb down*
It HAD to be John to pull this off. His commitment level to make Dick such a memorable character was a joy to watch in my formative years surrounded by an amazing supporting cast and writers and crew.
Still holds up as a great show that will be discovered by generations to come
Such a great show and his role was amazing in it
I love sitcoms. Out of all sitcoms 3rd Rock is by far the best. I'm glad I have the box set.
You are the only reason i watch this series
I love 3rd Rock. It's just lovely--LOVELY, VERY NICE.
He would have made an AMAZING Frasier
John Lithgow is a man, he looks like a cross between Daniel Boone and Steve carell
He is thee man 🌹💖
John Lithgow...the best actor ever....seriously.
I am still watching that show, it is amazing 😉
I am watching all seasons i am still cracking up .Outstanding cast JOHN soooo funny and brave those bikini scenes naked scenes 😮
He alone made that show funny
Such an amazing actor and down to earth Alien masquerading as a human
He is so impressive. The way he speaks... its so clear and distinct.
Remarkable actor, he's personality reflects the greatest accomplishment that is American television...
The video description is a bit misleading. He must have been talking about Cheers (wherein he wouldn't have been the star), because Frasier was a spin-off and it would have been absurd to use someone other than Kelsey Grammer -- especially since their previous spin-off attempt had failed.
John Lithgow is a great actor, though. His role in Dexter was wonderfully executed, inverting the concept he described here in reference to 3rd Rock (which was very similar to Dexter's primary issue) into someone who -- seemingly without trying -- appeared perfectly normal despite being a twisted serial killer.
In other interviews, Lithgow says he was offered the Frasier Crane role on _Cheers_ and adds, “If I would have accepted that role nobody would have ever heard of Frasier Crane - (Kelsey is) the one that turned it into an incredible phenomenon."
Kelsey Grammer's great in the role, and I think John Lithgow would've been, too.
he's cute👌
John Lithgow is one of THE great American actors of all time.
"Isn't that what we're all doing!". That really got me.
I can definitely see him as Fraiser.
Great actor like his father who happened to be contemporary and comrade on the thespian travesty with my dad’s cousin another Dominican actor and first cinematographer in the DR named Camilo Carrau Villanueva. Both excellent Dominican actors: Arthur Lithgow & Camilo Carrau-Villanueva.
What the heck was the issue with the 3 ppl who disliked this video? I mean why?
Wow, Kelsey Grammer was not first choice to be Dr. Crane on Cheers, that's surprising. Funny the stories you hear about sitcoms. I love Lithgow, especially as Dick Solomon. In my estimation, Dick is one of the greatest sitcom characters to grave the small screen.
REBOOT! REBOOT!
Or a movie,,,Men In Black meet the Solomons.

It's sooo good. Only second to Seinfeld. Such a brilliant idea for a show, I'm surprised there hasn't been something else like it. Of course we have Mork & Mindy but it's really different still, and older. Same with Alf.
