Korvin a brilliant actor, playing the french version of Carey Grant in To Catch A Thief. And Naish reminded me of Inspector Cloussau, but not quite as bumbling. Always top notch. Ella Raines perfect for the part . Entire cast, of fine character actors. Thanks alot for posting!!

Being a movie fanatic from the time I grew up watching ALL the black n white classics with my Mom in the 1960's as a kid for many years, n continuing this quest throughout my life, I am amazed I haven't heard of Charles Korvin. A most elegant n extremely attractive man, with the Kirk Douglas cleft chin, n suave mannerisms, it is a joy to watch him for the first time with his sidekick George Dolenz, also a first exposure to in films as well as Ella Raines, a third first for this Holy Thursday, she being VERY beautiful, so it puzzles me that due to my inclination towards classic 1940's films that I have never seen any of these three actors. Thank you for making me aware of my loss in my 66 th year of life. They are an excellent combination!! Happy Easter!! 🙏🥀🌼🐰🐤🐍🥚🐔🐇🐣📽️😇

Mickey Dolenz, a WONDERFUL dude, the only living Monkee left, has ALWAYS been one of my favorites!!! Great singer, n fabulous musical character n legend n comedic personality from my 1960's culture growing up!!! Would LOVE to meet him n hear his hilarious anecdotes n stories of the BEST musical era in history!!

Whenever I see a film I hadn't seen from this era set in England, I enjoy counting actors who played in the Sherlock Holmes series of films. I counted six of them, ie, Sondegaard, Mander, Herbert, Hodgeson, Hamer and Delavante. Sondegaard played the delightfully wicked Spider Woman. Mander played arch-villain Giles Connover and a victim in The Scarlet Claw. Herbert, Hodgeson and Hamer appeared in several of the films, and Delavante was one of the Good Comrades in House of Fear. It was a great era for "B-films" in Hollywood in part because so many talented English and other European character actors fled Europe.

1944, it is doubtful that one could telephone French police from England. They would speak to gestaatzpolezei instead.

The intro music is so modern sounding for 1944. It reminds me of the 1970s Star Wars theme..I agree with the other comment - J Carrol Naish's acting was all histrionics - way over the top. Surprised the director didn't make him tone it down...
Raines' was stunning in her youth - see her in The Suspect...

I agree. I once spent several years of my life watching every then-available pre-code movie (movies made between 1929 and 1934, approx). I watched hundreds of them, in total. There were plenty of timeless gems, but there were also plenty of awful duds, not worth the celluloid they were printed on.
The same is true, in my experience, about silent films and WWII-era films, both of which I seek out, though not as thoroughly as I have with pre-codes.
The reason people think that movies were better in the past is that duds are quickly forgotten, while only the gems of an era are still talked about 90 years later.
I guarantee that anyone who runs the experiment of choosing a year and then watching every single movie released in that year will learn the lesson that 95% of movies always have been and always will be cash grabs, and at least half of those are uninteresting or incompetently made. That was as true in Cecil B. DeMille's day as it is in our own.
