I think the nun knew exactly what was going on, and in the end it looked like she was relieved Lib took the girl. Her “vision” excuse was to let the nurse know she wasn’t going to tell.

I was about to say the exact same thing. You beat me to it. Yes, the nun knew. She was clearly enquiring after Anna‘s health and you what had happened but was speaking in a way that kept her from being liable. And, I agree, that she wasn’t going to tell anyone.
The nun was in a precarious position of being a an Irish woman and not an outsider, trying to maintain the faith of the Catholic Church but also being aware that the insane enabling of an anorexic child what is occurring

Great video, but some facts were different than you explain. The Parents of Will didn't commit suicide, they starved to death, they locked themselves inside the house and nailed the door shut from the inside during the great famine. Just so they wouldn't and couldn't die on the streets like many others did. As for the Nun, she knew everything that was going on simultaneously with Lib, she denied it at the judges table to keep the story true. She saw Will take Anne away and asked Lib if she was going to be okay. She just disguised it in a "vision" but both she and Lib knew what it truly meant.

They kinda did commiy suicide, they lockrd themselves up amd the i dont think the nun caught it intil Lib said something in front of the committee. Then she realized it was actually true.

  • @rhiisabean8144

I think that the nun was speaking in code to Lib when she’s tending to her. She asks “did she go to a better place?” Which I didn’t catch at first, but that question was asked of Anne previously and she answered that one could never know, implying that only God and the Devil know. A nun in this community would likely share that sentiment, but instead she asks Lib- A non-believer, a skeptic, an outsider- this question. That just struck me as odd. It’s like she’s saying-without-saying, “I know what you’ve done, and I’ll keep your secret.”

Personally, I think the mom and dad knew about the fasting AND it was their idea and they convinced Anna it was the only way to save him, her parents story to her. This makes the movie so much harder to watch in my opinion

I felt like this too. It's also possible that they blame Anna for what happened and they gave her the insane feeling of guilt. And being blindly religious they might truly believe that the death of their daughter would save both of their children in the eternal afterlife...

Florence Pugh and Kila Lord Cassidy have overflowing chemistry onscreen. The Wonder is not your average period thriller mystery drama film. It carries a very significant message that may be life changing for some people. We all appreciate your breakdown of the entire movie. I love the way you broke down the caged bird and in/out motif. I didn't think about how it applies to Lib. I think it also plays out at the end of the film where Anna is still living a lie and has adopted a new story. In this case, believing in her new story frees her. Earlier in the film, I did question her original story and whether it was a trap or freedom. If Anna and her family truly believed that, in their story, Anna will live forever in Heaven, then they're believing in their own version of freedom. Such an interesting film!

I lived in Ireland for a few years myself. I empathised with Liv and I realised that I, also, probably seemed like a condescending snob.
I was there at a time when a 13-year-old girl had been raped by her uncle and she was pregnant. Abortion being illegal in Ireland, her family was trying to get her to England but The government was trying to stop them.Schools actually sent busloads of school children to sit outside her house pray and beg her not to abort the baby… Nobody harassed the uncle.
As a religious person myself, this challenged my faith. I couldn’t see any reason in gangs of people harassing a teenager rape victim oh why anyone would imagine that is what Jesus would want

Marvelous discussion of this film. What I like about your approach is that it focuses on the intent of what was created rather than story recap followed by loads of personal reaction. It's the difference sometimes bewteen the just seen, actual film on dvd and the dvd extras. On the extras the enthusiasm of those involved (glad to be working, I'm sure) is shown as well as and concepts in the creation of the piece. It has happened those extras had me wishing I had seen the film everyone involved is talking about---that movie--- rather than the one I just watched, the finished product. Your review is a little like this, and good on you!

I did like the movie but like the other movie adaptation of Emma donoghue books (room) I found the books had way more context and gave more explanations why the characters are the way they are which is very strange cuz the movies follow the books plot really well but they feel very different? I feel this way about sally Rooney movie adaptions to and maybe some books/authors are just like that and just don’t translate into movies as well as others do. I also I wasn’t a huge fan of the fourth wall bit, I get why they had that in but just felt it took u to out of the historical setting and the story itself explained why ppl believe what they want to believe

    • @Genmariebuthod

I agree. Every good book doesn't need to be turned into a movie. I wish we could let things exist in their best quality form. In this and Room, I thought the books were so good in a way that only works in a book, it can't carry over to being onscreen. What Donoghue does so well in her writing is putting us into her characters' internal worlds. That's one thing that's really hard to do with film.

First I was little aftaid what will this religiously themed movie bring, as I am catholic, but I really liked it.
For me it felt really realistic. No crazy cult, just simple folk that seem like really good a honest people, but partly slipping into extremism of their religion and getting lost in it.
In this, I see the nun as kind of redeeming character as someone who represents catholic church. As many have noticed, she knew Anna was kidnapped, but she is glad for it. Even in the scene where she is asked, if she saw the feeding, she looked like she would really want it to be true so this madness could end, but at the same time, she simply might really not notice it and she wouldn't lie about it.
Thanks to this, I don't feel like this movie is aimed against catholic church, but thruthfully shows how you can twist the belief system into something really bad and extreme.
Also one thing I noticed, Anna says she does the fasting to release one soul. She is talking about her brother but in the end it could be Lib, because thanks to all of that, she was freed from her grief and drugs and started a new life. So we could say her prayers were fulfilled.
Nothing is black or white. This movie shows it.

This movie like many of them came out at a very convenient time. It came out when concepts of breatharianism got resurfaced once again. So the message here is this: next time you hear about someone not eating for a prolonged period of time - think it is a lie just like in that movie. So the experiment lasted for two weeks and she stopped eating in secret after about a week. The idea that a person can die without food in a week is laughable. Only people who never fasted can believe that - which is the majority for whom this movie was created.

Second of all, the amount her mother was feeding her was very small, so she was still suffering from hunger, just barely getting by before Lib came. Once Lib cut off her only source (inadvertently), she began to decline much quicker. Not unrealistic at all.

@@martakhry302 Dying without food in two weeks is just as ridiculous as in one week. Just a couple months ago I had 21-day water fast. I felt more energy than ever and I personally know two people that do not eat at all. Everything you know about this process is a lie, you actually wasting energy digesting food and not gaining anything. But as always you can trust the science or try it for yourself. Once you experience it, such stories are as laughable as the stories of people eating their friends stranded on the island. After 2-3 days you don't want to eat physically and after 5-7 days you are so calm and at peace that killing someone at this point is literally impossible.

Top 20 worst movies I’ve seen. Nothing happens, no twists, no unique scene/scenes, bad audio to where you need the subtitles, literally a try hard “deep” movie. Trash

Nope, an OK, but flawed movie. Yes, the symbolism was great, but transitions could be better to help in understanding the symbolism in relation to what was happening. For example: just before the first time Lib took the drug and pricked her finger, there needed to be something (maybe another brief scene} to show it was actually Lib doing this. She and Anna looked a little bit alike in the shadowy lighting. So I thought at first it was Anna doing the ritual as maybe part of her religious practice. Very confusing. Also, no real clarity as to what was actually in the bottle; how many of us in this 21st century world would be aware of the common use of laudanum for many ailments in the 19th?
