I can see why Magnus called it a cheap trick - to pull it off he exchanged a winning position (stockfish 11: -1) to a losing position (+4.2) with the expectation that Bill will blunder and mate himself. The only way to escape the mate threat while maintaining the winning position is to move the rook.

Thing is, if he wouldn't, he'd run out of time soonish. One can play whole games with only 30 sec online, but in face-to-face there ain't no premoving and the moving takes you ever so long. Look how he just lost three seconds by accidentaly knocking the pawn.
@@wiede9312 Not really true, I've played vs Carlsen and seen him play vs many of my friends with 30 sec timers as well as done it myself, you can easily play 60 move games against worse people, because you use the opponents time to both do the thinking and to prethink your movement. Knocking over pieces will cost you time, but you can usually do the first 15 moves in less than 5 seconds. Carlsen was not trying his hardest here, he usually moves way faster than this.

True story: when I was 17, I worked at the book bindery in Portland, OR where the very first windows instruction books were printed. One day, Gates had a meeting with the manager in their office. After Gates left, the manager - a young Australian guy - called a meeting with everyone working and told us all to "invest in Microsoft - everything you can." No one listened. He was so serious about it, too. I remember the sound of "gold rush" in his voice. He was so earnest. It was like he was letting us in on a secret, no joke. We just didn't take it seriously. I mean as in I knew of it and knew they donated a lot worldwide but when you actually look at all the different countries, illnesses, causes etc that they fund and help to cure its far beyond what i expected. The thing he said about philantropy was really great. I think more people should listen to this. Of course 100 billion dollars are more than a small amount of money. But a billionaire who donates billions of dollars still got billions. Someone who has to give up on something they want or need just to help someone else could be considered more generous. I'm not shaming on rich people for donating, I just loved to hear it from someone in that exact position.
At the very end of the video, you can see Bill Gates get up and was about to leave a little too early, and the host asked him to sit back down. Gates did this on the Daly Show too and it was so funny as he walked away.
