  • The Daily Mail's Craig Hope reflects on Newcastle United's 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at St James' Park.
    But who gets his 3 merit stars? Bruno Guimaraes? Alexander Isak? Elliot Anderson? Anthony Gordon? Fabian Schar? Even Eddie Howe should be in contention for his tactical masterclass.

    Mourinho used to often say that you can control a game without necessarily having the majority of possession. On the Eddie Howe front I’ve not really seen or heard any genuine supporter have anything other than 100% support and appreciation for what he’s achieved. The first 11 is a high quality team, they just haven’t been able to get them out for most of the season and therein has been the problem.

    We're 10 points behind them because of who we've both played thus far. Tottenham started off racing to the top of the table at first and were banging on about winning the league playing the bottom teams whilst Newcastle slogged it out against the best at the start of the season. Now if you look at the fixtures remaining Tottenham have to play much more difficult opponents than we do. Expect that gap to close and who knows, Newcastle could overtake them and, for a season where we'd also played Champion's League football where they didn't, and had a consistently high massive injury list, that represents a massive result and, dare I even think it - a representation that Tottenham are about to be firmly replaced as a big 6 club in terms of pitch quality/

    Anderson was my MOTM because his presence and his performance brought Longstaff up to standard and if we’d had him drifting around like an empty carrier bag again, that whole game could have been completely different, spurs defending or not. Anderson enabled everyone around him. He was the catalyst. Yes, AG and yes, Isak, but that’s their job and spurs defence was all at sea. Anderson disrupted. Geordie J7!

    Excellent summing up Craig. Great performance from the lads especially Eliiot Anderson who did a lot that wouldnt he picked up by the stats nerds. The only criticism I can give is Eddie's reluctance to bring on subs. Murphy was struggling from 55 mins and was telling the touchline but it took 20 mins before Tino came on. The bench was week but he needs to be a bit more reactive

    What a great position to be in to almost break your star system…lovely to see you re-enthused! As we all are!! I think in that match the lack of Joelinton’s attributes was some how picked up by Elliott Anderson who was extra tenacious, and also Bruno was the fulcrum. Everything good had him in it. And some of those passes. There were are few where the crowd in unison made that ‘awe’ noise… like when Willockino did that pass.
    I think you needed an honorary merit award - perhaps a ‘Craig’, for Eddie. He conducted and rehearsed that beautiful concerto!
    Cheers Craig and glad you enjoyed a well earned break 😊

    No complaints with your merit awards today. Isak was MOTM (his brilliant well timed run and finish for the 3rd goal was the epitome of his world class performance today). Elliot for the first time deservedly got onto the awards imo.
    As for you asking why we are 10 points behind Spurs, it is because we have been dog shite in so many games this season, dropping unnecessary points from winning positions and/or completely losing the plot at home to the likes of Forest and away to Luton. Let us not get too hyped up, this is only the second game in this season the manager actually had to put on some tactical masterclass. Most of the season, it was more of the same insane decisions. And if you want to look at critically his decision making, imagine keeping Bruno on after the game was truly won 4-0 and taking Elliot off first, the man is on his 9th yellow, get him off immediately!!! If the manager can keep the team playing like today then there won't be calls for him to be sacked. It is simple.

    Great video as always and thanks for the WhatsApp group as well, i love that. Great to finally see the top 3 play together. I must admit i prefer Gordon on the right, he was getting a little predictable on the left. I also think he uses his pace better on right as he doesn't need to slow down and come inside. Burn has also been a revelation at centreback, good to know we do have cover there, maybe we only need one centre back in the summer, also a striker is a must to support isak.

    I thought the possession stats were wrong as well. I was very shocked about it. 😂 We had 16 corners. I can't remember us ever having that many. Just total bossed the game. Eddie had them very well organised. 10/10 for him today.

    • @ChangoBravo
      @ChangoBravo Месяц назад

      I read a comment from The Mag (on OneFootball) saying (joking?) that the possession stats were skewed by the Spuds' timewasting tactics.
      From the shots/corners stats it's hard to understand otherwise. More direct, incisive play I suppose, I saw the number of passes was also way lower for NUFC. Give it to one of BIG and let them run with it rather than passing about endlessly in the middle of the park going nowhere?

    • @yanited1892
      @yanited1892 Месяц назад

      @@ChangoBravo Yeah the passing stats were obviously going to be lower than Spurs' due to them having more possession. Eddie Howe just done his homework correctly, we did what Nottingham Forest more or less did to us.

    Thanks Craig for another great review!
    I’ve came away thinking even more that without the injuries we’ve got a great team squad. Financial fair play has our hands tied, but if we had worked out why injuries are so bad and restrict them this season would be top 4 fighting again no doubt. Look where we are despite the horrendous injuries?
    Add to that Results like 4-1 PSG, the 1-1 away, 0-0 in Milan. Dumping City out a cup, losing in the league in injury time in a premier league classic. And now this with a hugely weakened team against a top spurs side. Even without investment in the summer, if we can find a way to manage our player fitness next season will be a great consolidation season battling for top 4 once again……even with our current full squad……..
