My jaw dropped again watching this. Great design and build. This got me thinking and designing, as any great build does. I'm wondering if you could build this in reverse from a single sheet, and just use a router with bottom cleaning bit to route out the slots in a sheet of plywood. I'm thinking if you clamped a stop piece so you could make a few passes to the same point for each slot, and attached a router edge guide to make sure you cut straight, you could just make a few passes to cut out each slot. It would be a bit of work, but maybe less than cutting everything up, using the dominos, and clamping it back together?
You definitely could, and that was actually the original plan (to do it with the X-Carve). We ran into some technical issues and time constraints, so we went with the quick and dirty method.
Great project idea and videos, thanks. I bought the plans and scaled up the dimensions from a standard Full mattress (54" x 75") up to a standard Queen (60" x 80"). But, after cutting all the planks, I realize that the design is actually a bit too short for a standard Full, and as a result, my side boards are a little too short to fit my existing Queen mattress (it will probably just barely fit, but with no clearance for sheet access at the head or foot). After studying the Sketchup, I realize that you built it around a 74" long mattress, which is 1" shorter than a standard. I'm sure that there's some variation in normal mattress lengths, but I would suggest that your plans should be based on the standard size (and yes, I should have drawn it all out and measured my mattress before cutting... lesson learned) Now I'm debating between cutting 1" from the footboards (which may or may not mess up the symmetry), or else shifting the side rails out by an inch or two, and adding a cosmetic spacer at the foot. Neither is ideal, but the Purebond plywood is too expensive to justify re-cutting all the side planks. I'll make it work, but figured I should point it out.
7 sheets in total. Definitely a lot of plywood! You could probably scale the sides of the rails to use less material, but I dig the beefy, low slung look.

Nice but a lot of waste on the bed base, you could have cut say 3” strips then a wider section on top and packed out underneath where you can’t see it. Not trolling, just an idea, nice work 👍🏼

Nice collaboration with Chris and a really cool bed! At 0:43 I notice a flicker in the image maybe it is because of the low light or high speed. But lately, my brand new Nikon has the same kind of flicker but much worse. Not always but in different situations. I just wanted to ask if you have that problem or know the solution.
Looks to me like it was LED lighting causing this. I get the same when using only LED lighting. The pulse-width modulation (PWM) of LEDs causes this. Slower shutter speeds will make it more noticeable too. @Erik did it -- the solution is just different lighting or adding lighting in addition to the LEDs. Increasing the shutter speed can help too. It is most noticeable (for me at least) in low-light situations where the only lighting is from an LED source, and I have to shoot at a low shutter speed to get adequate exposure.
+Modustrial Maker I’m pretty sure the lighting in Chris’ shop is fluorescent, but I could be wrong. I’ve had the same flickering issue with LEDs before, happens in my shop. Seems like shutter speed is the biggest culprit.
Use a car clamp! Put the work against the back wall of the garage, roll your car onto a 2x4 on the other side of the work. Then reverse your clamps and push the work against the wall. Great videos guys

pipe clamps....cheap....and adjustable lengths up to 10 feet using a full length of pipe. Home Depot will cut the pipe and thread it for you for free in most cases
Subscribed because of this video. I watch Chris's videos religiously, and I thought this was a great video. I may actually attempt to build this. I often wonder about the glue and chemicals in plywood, and whether or not it would be healthy to live with/sleep on. Great project.
A quick question; at 2:17 he's cross cutting along side the fence. Isn't that super dangerous because it can bind? or is there a certain length the board can be before you should remove the fence and push it through freely?
Mathew, it's definitely not the safest cut, but you definitely don't want to remove the fence and cut it freely. Kickback happens when pieces twist usually, so freehand cutting is a big no-no. The best solution would have been a large crosscut sled or to use a circular saw/track saw.
Fantastic to see both you guys making something together! Awesome job :) Although, it seems to me that the switches are too far to reach without stretching your whole body when you are in the bed, isn't that true? The idea was very nice!
Awesome idea. Looks greatThough I would put the switches closer to the mattress so you can turn them off/on while in bed. Also I think the lights should be totally left right so one person can read and the other sleep.
I really like the aesthetic of this. Those plywood joints of the frame are going to be super sturdy, too. Gives me a couple ideas to throw into other projects. Plywood seems to be a recurring theme lately..
Why have the 2 switches for the lights? Seems like an odd choice. You could have spliced them together and put the whole thing on a dimmer. I think the headboard looks pretty cool but the backside is very sloppy with the lighting and disappointing. Love your videos though!
+James Helms I wanted the lighting to be independently controlled on each half of the bed. If only one person is in bed, they can still turn on enough light to illuminate the whole headboard, but if two people are in bed, they can either get a little more light or just have one person control it. The wiring could have certainly been tidied up, but this was really just a prototype, not for a client.

Thanks! Purebond is actually formaldehyde free and uses soy-based glues. That's one of the big reasons I use it for my furniture builds.
great build. how did you get your LED tape to make 90 degree turn? I didnt see connection clamps or soldering. did you just fold the tape?

This is a fairly simple project really. Circular saw and straight edge, some clamps, sander, and maybe a router would get you there.

They don't, sorry! I wouldn't know the standard lumber sizes in metric, so it'd be hard to do the conversion.
