The sound of music!
That is wonderful!
Only a car guy can understand all the joy this sound of engine running can bring to your soul!
The moment it started i was blown away.. when it cleared that exhaust and they manage to let it idle for a bit then driving by its own power with clogged clutch, man.. this car is a piece of automotive history survived so long yeah hat off to those 2 guys involved in starting and to everyone involved !
A car gal has the same understanding. Especially when she works on her own vehicles.
There's nothing like the first start-up of an engine you've just rebuilt or one that has sat for many years. It's always a thrill. My 1960 Saab 93F was stored for over 20 years when I got it and the engine was fogged when it was stored. Plus the Marvel Mystery oil I put down the cylinders made so much smoke, you could hardly see the car. It smoked a lot the first time I drove it but it cleared up as much as 2 stroke will ever do.
Would be good to have heard the first start instead of someone yahooing about it. I was screaming shut up I want to hear it.
Sounds like half of a WW2 German fighter plane motor. Oh wait….
Great job on the startup. Congrats on the rollout. Shows what hard work and talent can accomplish
I love some of the sarcasm, too. 'Think this will work' while holding the spark plug wiring...hahaha.
It’s past my bedtime but I couldn’t stop watching! I bet you all were thrilled! I was thrilled for you. I can’t wait to see the continued progress.
It was an amazing day for sure! Thanks for watching!
FANTASTIC!! I've been following the story on this car and was pleasantly surprised that the clutch worked. I think with the new exhaust, it'll sound like the day it was born. 👍👍
The felt on the distributor shaft is for oiling and deserves a drop or two.
Yes, I've seen this before. It's there to help prevent the heel (which comes into contact with the Camshaft) of the Contact Breaker Points, slows down wear, and helps to maintain the Points Gap. Good point! Later, I would fit electronic ignition inside the (restored) original Distributor. The engine really benefits from this action, becomes more lively, by improving the the "firing' cycle. You never need to set the Points gap ever again.
Every moving part or link on the engine deserves some oil. I do it to my Citroens all the time and it's a very relaxing thing to do, giving everything a drink. And it has a lot of places to oil.
Congratulations on staring this fine looking Mercedes!
Yeah baby! You may have temporarily added to the smog alert, but still ..
Wow. Beautiful! What an ad for Mercedes quality!!!
Auctioneer: “the car’s value is considerably enhanced by the authenticity of its patina!”
I love the dog’s enthusiasm at the end!!!
One of my passions are in-Line 6 cylinder engines, and this one just got better with each start. Amazing to watch!
I remarkable find. 1940 Benz that runs. I look forward your continuing work on this project. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching !!
Happy days!
Yes indeed!
Looks great. Small point, when you fill water, clean distributor and clean carb, all when your sparkplugs are removed, all small dirt entered the combustion chamber, potentially damaging the internals. Also new oil types have a high 'detergent' agent, cleaning out all micro metal dirt within the engine and loosen it up to be 'ground' into all precious bearings..... I do enjoy the excitement but too many oldies are damaged (prematurely for its remaining life) in this process... But; it is a beautiful car!!!
That is a very good point. I've rebuilt the engines on my two Citroen Tractions and after the break in on mineral oil have run them on fully synthetic. I've added toiler paper oil filters which keeps the oil pretty clean as the engines didn't originally have a filter.
It's alive! IT'S ALIVE!
As soon as you walked away too! 😆
Man that sounds great!
Congrats Randy!
Hi from Australia. Refer to the thumbnail - my first car was a 170SD. I ROLLED IT the day after I got it! Engine was transferred into a black body - used to create tracks through the bush. Diesel was hard to get - farmers obliged.
Sie Lebt! Sie Lebt! Congratulations Randy! I'm very glad the hard work is paying off!
Red letter day for sure 🤗👍👍
Definitely!!
So cool! Thanks for bringing us along on the journey.
It's a Mercedes, they run forever. Great job, all of you.
That Mercedes quality definitely is a thing!
WOW this old girl sounds incredible after 60 years without a start, vey nice, look'in forward to the next reveal.
I know this is an older video but wanted to just say I really love all “Will it start” videos. This one was perfect….. I smiled Ll the way through it.
Get your motor running. Rolling down the highway. Looking for adventure. Yer got step one. Congrats !!! This car a good omen. Case in point, a major piece of the puzzle coming from South America out of nowhere. Everything is in line like that smooth straight six
Unbelievable… congrats!!!!!
This old girl deserves a full restoration!! Engine runs great.
She may get that at some point, but the first step in my eyes is to make it run and go as is and source any missing parts. We really look forward to showing the car a couple times as is too…there is such magic and beauty in its state of decay.
Fabulous! I'm stoked for you!
Thank you!!
The sheet metal and chrome on this baby looks to be phenomenal. Real quality..
Randy...Hooray!! So happy to see the old girl cough and splutter to life. This lady is a gem. Keep 'em coming,
Randy I’m happy for you The memories that you already made with the car getting it started with your buddies and your brother
I use to have a 1952 Daimler Barker Special Sports, the styling is so similar, 2.5 straight 6 with a preselection box and auto chassis
lube, a reluctant sale due to immigration, that never happened.
Such is life. 😁
Outstanding, very nice going boys, that toy is running practically perfect for the time that has been sitting, I wish to be there with you guys, enjoy, make the best out of it, if I am seen right the instrument gauges are working, the difference in between man and the boys is the size of their toys, from the endless summer paradise Puerto Rico, Jesús Torres.
So glad to see you got the radiator cap and emblem 👍
It was not cheap...but it was SO good to see it in place!
@@Carchaeology Have you reordered the star from Mercedes? I've been amazed at how good it looks. May I ask what that cost?
I LOVE THE CLASSIC TORPEDO LOOK...!!! RINGS ARE GETTING FREER AND FREER...AWSOME...HAPPY YOU GUYS GOT IT RUNNING!!!! DOS IST SERE GOOT!!!
Hell yea, old car guys never give up!! OMG couple good laughs, thanks guys !!
We were all having such a great time! Glad you enjoyed it too.
Fantastic Randy! One step forward. Looking forward to watching the process. Cheers
Glad to see you guys took all the necessary safety precautions. Fire extinguisher, pouring gas into the carb, and a cigarette dangling from someone’s lips. LOL ! Great job, reminds me of me when I was a little bit younger. Thanks, great job. RickGTI…..🇺🇸🔧
Always remember … Safety third!
Wow, that's a great team effort with a super result. I think that's the first flathead type Mercedes engine I've seen.
Good job on getting it running reminds me of when I got my 53 mg roadster running it was a barn find in Carolina when I got back from nam drove it for 2 years then sold it to the battalion commander for a profit .
Thats damn cool, congrats!!!
Was cool to see you get the Lab report before continuing!
i love old American cars i like this 1 brilliant fantastic youtube video thanks take care.
I can't imagine how rare that car is plus being in the U.S, I wonder now how many still exist and production numbers... It deserves a full-restoration. Those headlights are huge & the Level is styling/design just wow!!!
They only made one like this, and this is it!
A full restoration may be in the future for the car, but for the moment the goal is operation and preservation!
@@Carchaeology Wow! I think i heard you say that in a follow-up video. Either way very special car! Priceless. If i can be of any help i have a friend here in the midwest (indiana) who has a 1940 as well, actually a Officer's car from the war and i'm sure he has some contacts for any specific parts you are needing or whichever. I myself am very good at finding Obsolete/Rare parts. Shoot me an Email if needed on my channel.
This is a high-value car, and congratulations on getting it running so smoothly! I do hope that this car gets completely stripped, lots of welding work, lots of parts to source to keep original as possible. Maybe Mercedes could help. Would love to see the complete restoration, and then the Shows much later on!! Whatever is spent will be worthwhile. Greetings from Australia.
Perhaps a restoration is in the future, but for now, it’s all preservation . I don’t feel that every car needs to be perfect in order to be enjoyed and appreciated . That being said, it would be spectacular at concours level! Thanks for watching and please follow along to see the progress!
Mercedes helped me back in the 1970s when I had a 38 170V cabriolet. When I was in the US Navy on a Med cruise, I went to the museum in Stuttgart and they gave me builder's drawings, copies of blueprints for the wooden body frame and on microfilm rolls, the shop, owners and parts manuals which I was able to copy and then return to them months later. They were a big help.
So very excited for you , been there many times working on a 1957 220s now thats been sitting since the early 70s. Love the car and the history!
Wow! Fun! And congratulation!
I asked people who are only into modern junky vehicles that are more computers than cars: If you compare your modern vehicle to a car of the Fourties and Fifties: You are speaking of progress? Listen how smooth old classics run and how solid everything was built back in the day : What is the "progress" you are talking about? Try to start any modern vehicle after sitting for over twenty years. Forget about it! The good vintage cars are ten times better than any nonsense built today. Cannot wait to see more of the Mercedes. But PLEASE do not give up on your Cadillac as well! By the way, the 41 Cadillac was one of the best and most modern cars of that period. More modern than this Mercedes beauty.
So excited for you to get it running. Love this project.
41:45 trying to find the door handle :) Great to hear it running. Nice work.
One word….wow!
The reason that it smoked was because they put oil in the spark plug holes because the engine has sat so long.
Exactly
It had a right to smoke anyway.
Awesome i want to see more of this car Its really kool
Nice... .
That would be a rolling sculpture of art deco
i've got a 1993 red merc here in cologne. that is truly magnificent!
Congratulations ! I was applauding for you. I love it. I look foward to your follow up videos. Rich/NJ
Thanks very much! Can’t wait to get this one out to some events to share with folks!
These guys are smart and know cars!! Great stuff!
Absolutely brilliant well done and well worth watching
I am very proud of your efforts and resulting success. Wish I could smell it myself. Congrats Randy and the crew!
You can smell it when you take a dump
Oh, man! That feeling when a lump of metal becomes an *automobile* just can’t be beat.
1940 i was born ! great car and the body in a real good shape;i hope you get it done if you restore this beaty.Greetings from Belguim.
One of the world's beauties, thank you for this vid a bit later :)
What a statement that body design makes!
A shot of "Start Ya Bastard" was required :) serious product with a not so serious name.
This must be the Mother of all Automobiles, brought back to life after 82 years! This Grand Old Lady purred back into life after much effort, showing that Germans really build that car to last!
Beautiful! Bravo! It's mercedes sound!
AWESOME !!!!
You just found my dream car. Congrats
Sorry guys but as 63 year old mechanic who hasn’t worked in the trade for 20 years I was feeling very sorry for the starter motor, but you got there in the end. It was nice to hear it running
We gave that old starter some rest time between takes…only had the camera rolling when the engine was spinning and we were hoping for it to fire.
Put some oil on the felt wiper in the distributor!
That is something really special.
That was FUN 👍👍👍 I think I saw the glow from the starter motor from the Bay Area 😂 man they are tuff!
Yes they are
Great work! 😎
Great stuff, fantastic to see it running, I'm most intrigued by the front suspension, I'm seeing a lower transverse leaf and what looks like inboard coils hiding at the bottom of the radiator, look forward to seeing more of that !!!
I counted 14 leaves, but it's hard to tell.
Yeah... a leafspring !!!
I had a 38 170V with two transverse leaf springs that also functioned as the control arms. It rode nice but the springs would twist when braking which did affect stopping the car. Stepping on the brakes in reverse was not much different than not stepping on the brakes. Plus the drums were only 10 inch. Not a lot of stopping power.
Wow such a cool car,
what a beauty, great job!
Standing in the smell of the blue oil smoke
And the Mercedes coughs on the piston stroke
wahoo It's alive 👌 nice job 👏
Look at the body style of this car...so darn sweat..to bad they don't make them like this anymore..most cars now of days all look the same.
Swear I saw this once before, none the less, its a great start off of many times of cussing to make it run and run well. I think our thirty six ford cabriolet looked identical to this rig. One year only and was the highest priced car of its time
As cantankerous as an old Rambler American in the beginning but in the end it seemed to run pretty good!
Wow that’s a nice quiet engine
That is smooth you guys worth the time cool
When I was in the US Army and transferred to Germany(59-60) I owned a 1/3 share of an old post war Mercedes (late 40's) well used taxi. GIs just bought and sold shares in an old car as they were transferred in and out of Germany. Never licensed. We had a diesel and swiped fuel from the motor. Saw a lot of Europe with it.
Cool story! Brings up some amazing images in my mind.
So cool!
I was afraid that with all that white smoke there was a blown head gasket, but no! Everything sealed up. Unbelievable. 82 year old car!!!!
It was really just the months of soaking the engine with penetrant burning off. Quite a bit went into the exhaust and such … once that all burned away it was clear sailing!
It's sad to think of just how many of those beautiful cars that were destroyed during WWII.
The loss of human life was also pretty tragic you know…but yeah, cars, architecture, etc… the mind spins thinking about it .
Noticing the Delco master cylinder, I’m reminded other videos on European cars reported many American auto parts were purchased by European makers, starters, carburetors, brakes. U-joints
It’s great that it runs and I wouldn’t care if the top speed was 45....!
It has I think the best looking body lines I have ever seen on a car...!
I think it looks like the car on 101 dalmatians Cruella Deville’s Sled...!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
It does have a lovely flow to the design.
@@Carchaeology ....
Yes it does it makes my 1971 Karmin Ghia look like a green pickle......😹
You Did It!!!!🇺🇸🎩🇺🇸🎩🇺🇸
Best day ever!!!!!!!!!!
Well done. That’s amazing. Great to see it move under its own power.
I agree! I love it when they come back to life!
So amazing 👍👍👍👍👍
That car is so frickin cool.
Thanks!
Always clean the points when starting something that has sat that long.
We did
That type of points are easy to get. I would just put a new set in. Bosch makes points for probably every European car.
This car must have a particularly interesting provenance, given its model year.
Great video and car you guys rock will subscribe Thanks guys
Thank you so much!
Nice car good shape
I would like to buff it out
I'm not easily impressed, but, I'm impressed,...LMAO. great car!
Wow, beautiful car! One of a kind! Do all electrics still work?
One for Pebble Beach concours! (which coach builder is it?)
We have not yet gotten to the electrics, but we are working on it. Check out our other videos on the history of the car. Coachbuilder is Rometsch of Berlin.
Smoke screen layer for when the bombers come?
AWESOME, SEMPER FIDELIS
So awesome!✊😁
Henry Magno, of Magno's restorations in Massachusetts restored a late '30's 170S Cab., making trips to and from Germany for parts and drawings. Would be worth contacting him. Thanks. Narragansett Bay
I've known Henry for years- I sold him some 170 parts many years ago. He did a great job with his 170.
