  • Eltville am Rhein is the largest town in the Rheingau, Rheingau-Taunus district in Hesse, Germany.
It is located in the Rheingau wine-growing region and is called the city of wine, sparkling wine and roses, since 2006 it has also been Gutenbergstadt and since 2020 it has been a sustainability city, which means it has the most city titles in Germany.
The old town of Eltville is characterized by a harmonious juxtaposition of half-timbered buildings, idyllic cobblestone streets, picturesque patrician houses, magnificent aristocratic courtyards and one of the most beautiful banks of the Rhine in the Rheingau.
Since 1988, Eltville has belonged to the select group of eleven German rose towns, seven rose villages and one rose district, in which the rose gardens characterize the townscape. In summer, countless rose bushes of numerous varieties bloom around the romantic Rhine promenade and the Electoral Castle, the historic landmark of the city.
There, where world-famous wines mature on gentle hills, the queen of the flower kingdom also thrives magnificently. Eltville, the oldest town in the Rheingau, was already making a name for itself as a town of roses at the end of the 19th century. In 1871 Carl Schmitt founded a rose nursery in Eltville.
