- In this episode of Brown Bag Mornings, we sit down with Grupo Frontera to talk about their unexpected journey to superstardom, their ordinary jobs before committing to music full-time and their epic collaborations with renowned artists like Carin Leon and Bad Bunny.
Originating from Rio Grande Valley in Texas, the group told Brown Bag they formed in 2022 with just three members: Julian, Beto, and Juan. Payo, the group’s lead singer, joked about feeling “stranger danger” when Juan slid into his DM to ask him to join the group after seeing his TikTok cover songs.
The original members, who initially looked to play at weddings and Quinceañeras as a part of an “add-on” to Julian’s freelance photography, never expected their third uploaded song, “No Se Va,” to go viral and give them the push into fame. The group revealed they hesitated to release the track for over a month, scared people wouldn’t like it because it wasn’t a cumbia.
While many thought they’d be another one-hit wonder, the group’s popularity only grew with collaborations with Regional Mexican artists like Carin Leon and Fuerza Regida, producing chart-topping hits and cementing their status as forced to be reckoned with in the Tex-Mex regional genre.
Their new-found fame reached new heights when global sensation Bad Bunny reached out to collaborate and break the internet with the song “x100to,” which group members revealed is a play on Bad Bunny’s 2018 album, “X100pre.” The group talked about getting goosebumps remembering their Coachella appearance with Benito, claiming to still watch the videos to remember it wasn’t only a dream.
The group opened up about their day-to-day schedule when performing, taking inspiration from classic regional artists like Duelo and Intocable, adjusting to fame and now owning the recording studio they once rented per hour to record their music.
While the group decided to plead the fifth when asked about possibly making songs in English, you can follow them on Instagram: @grupofrontera and across music-streaming platforms to keep up with new music.

Tejano! How come no one is saying tejano? That’s what I grew up with in the 90s. A lot of the songs were cumbias exactly like this. Others had heavy sax and keyboard
Loved watching this BAYTOWN TX here puro Mexico y tejas everyone been sleeping on TX but we never slept on it.
OMG, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE 💕 GRUPO FRONTERA (Viva RGV) I lived in Edinburg, attended PanAm.
I am obsessed and to find out y’all just started out? Geesh I cannot wait for the future!
California is a pro dominantly banda scene. Their radio stations and dj’s have no no idea of the onda we’ve had for generations that young lady dj needs to di her research. Also the young guys in the band need to learn how to represent/defend their home region/roots musically. They young and hopefully gotta ling road ahead. Much luv guys puro pinche 956 alv!

13:35 HOW DID U ALL FIND THIS SOUND?! 😂 😳….ITS BEEN A THING SINCE A WHILE BACK. ITS A VALLEY THING, 🌴PURO 956 🌴. ITS ALSO A TEXAS THING! CUMBIAS MAKE EVERYTHING BETTER 💃🏻 👏🏼💯🎼🎤🇲🇽
Its the Cumbia Nortena/ Tejana if you look back that sound started with Ramon Ayala, other Norteños would do corridos, Rancheras, bolero, polka ,ect but Ramon Ayala capitalized on that cumbia sound, I cant think of any other conjuntos to do cumbias before Ayala. Cumbia was around but it sounded tropical, correct me if im wrong.
I am such a fan of these guys I think what makes their sound is the accordion
the best country in the world- Texas representing! lol; great show!
This guys are livid the dream! I am so envious now!
21:40 cuando escuché grupo frontera por primera vez y supo que eran de Texas, me recordé de Selena
Valley Proud 956 🌴
California and SouthTexas are two different vibes ❤956 de cora❤
California is influenced by Northwestern Mexican(Sonora, Sinaloa) aka banda, corridos, and norteño music northwestern mexican style. Meanwhile Texas is influenced by Northeastern Mexican(Nuevo León, Coahuila, Tamaulipas) and Tejano aka norteño northeastern mexican style, cumbia norteña, and huapangos norteños.
My favs intocable y duelo 😊
Shout out to LA for showing love to Texas❤️
I had pleasure of seeing them in San Antonio it was Great 👍
I’m not hating. Love the group and their music. Just pointing out that the lead singer can do the shibidiboob belly dance like that guy we’ve all seen.
🤣🤣🤣😭😭😭
EStos muchachos cantaran en ingles y seran super famosos son hombres sanos y de buen corazon..FELICIDADES Y MUCHAS BENDICIONES.
When do they talk about Selena?
Make more with Spanish singers !!!!
This interview is funny from a Puerto Rican grupo frontera is legit
Omg they are American?? I had no idea. So talented
Magic Valley
Love brown bag but it’s more about the guest. You should show more respect for their valley 💜 imagine going somewhere else n they tell you “you’re in ____ here, not wherever you’re from” and I say that from a girl from the SFV 💜 there’s time n place 🤍
Lmao I can tell you’re from California for getting offended by that. I guarantee these tejanos didn’t even think about it twice.
She was tryna make a point that valley here means San Fernando, that’s it
The interview girl hella beautiful
Letty 😍
Letty gets annoying after a while, now i see why dohknow left...
So is doknow still doing the podcast for brown bag just not the power show?
There probably trying to figure that out
I think the girl during the Inter is a bit disrespectful
I really considered Duelo, Intocable and now Grupo Frontera to be under the “Norteño” music genre
Facts lol when I think of Cumbias, I think of Mexico City.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
They are norteño it’s just that those die hard Texans that refuse to believe Tejano is dead try to claim them when in Reality they play música norteña 😂
@@JoseVera20 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@JoseVera20 37:42 is all I gotta say hatin aşş.
Screaming ❤
Siggno just signed to their management VHR this was the missing link exciting things are coming for the new Tejano wave
I could’ve sworn guy in the middle of the pin was the Russian belly dancer 😂

Eslabón armado could’ve been like grupo frontera but instead bit the hand that fed them,
Shout out to Latin artist hyping up other Latin artist!
So if doknow own part of the brown bag name how they using it without paying him????
Not me just finding out Lettys dad is from Guanajuato! My paisanos Fr 😭🫶🏻
Maybe that’s why she doesn’t know much about northeastern and tejano cumbia. Her dad is not northern Mexican but central Mexican. Guanajuato is in central Mexico so they have another culture more similar to Jalisco and CDMX. Although many Mexicans that aren’t from the northern part are really into that culture nowadays. Even young people who aren’t norteños are now super into it. When it comes to non-norteños chicanos, they’ve always been more more open to northern Mexican music. Northern Mexico is where the whole cowboy stuff comes from and slang like vato, morra, macizo, arre, pistear, and compa come from. California is influenced by Northwestern Mexican(Sonora, Sinaloa) aka banda, corridos, and norteño music northwestern mexican style. Meanwhile Texas is influenced by Northeastern Mexican(Nuevo León, Coahuila, Tamaulipas) and Tejano aka norteño northeastern mexican style, cumbia norteña, and huapangos norteños.
It’s Northern Mexican cumbia.
Letty is boss, she shows it in this interview
956 ALV !!!
Puro 956 ❤
I’m thinkin Central Valley lol
Texas> California
