  • I have a Karavan flatbed (snowmobile) trailer which I converted into a utility trailer by building sides for. I just did an overhaul of this trailer including new wheels, sides, and decking. The only step left was to grease the bearings. This video shows the steps of how to do that.

    What I've learned is this...if the rear bearing was not packed with sufficient grease in the first place, this method isn't going to fix it. Instead, the entire hub should be disassembled, cleaned, and checked carefully for defects. If they're still good, then repack and reinstall. Otherwise you're just guessing what's going on in there.

    That was sweet moment when your helper said he loved you. Good for you not worrying about interruptions while filming. Question: with the EZ fill cert how do you know when all the old grease has been replaced by the new grease?

      Thanks for watching! When you see the new clean grease come out of the center of the hub you should be all set.

    Great video! Question - do all bearing systems require the same “fitting” or “connector” from the grease gun? Is the fitting called a “zerc” fitting?

    • @hobbyhandyman
      @hobbyhandyman  Год назад

      Thanks! Trailers have various different types of bearings, but they all require grease. I don’t think all types of hubs have grease common fittings though. There would be other methods of greasing those types of bearings. I believe the ones on my trailer are called EZ-lube. You are correct, the fitting is called a zerk. Thanks for watching.

    Wow I was completely lost on why my axles sounded like I was flinging the teeth on a chainsaw but the lack of grease or should I say none at all would explain that . Do most new axles come like that with no grease?

    • @hobbyhandyman
      @hobbyhandyman  3 месяца назад

      They should be greased from the factory but doesn’t hurt to do your own.

  • @davidsdean

    How does this ensure the interior bearing has gotten fresh grease?

    • @hobbyhandyman
      @hobbyhandyman  2 года назад +1

      Once you pump the grease through you should see all the old grease coming out of the hub. When you see the new grease coming out of the hub then you know that the old grease is being replaced.

    • @johnjacobjinglehimerschmid3555

      @@hobbyhandyman Ok so the assumption is that if you have grease exiting the front that the whole cavity inside the hub is filled, and grease is properly lubricating the rear bearing?
      Thanks for replying ....

    How often do you grease it? Like every year?

    • @hobbyhandyman
      @hobbyhandyman  Месяц назад +1

      Depends on how much you use the trailer. Shouldn’t have to do it too much. You can pump a little in each year to see what the grease looks like coming out the other side.

    Are you post to.use wheel bearing grease?

    • @hobbyhandyman

      The grease I used is Lucas red n tacky multipurpose grease which can be used on wheel bearings among other items.

    How do you know you haven’t over greased?

    • @hobbyhandyman
      @hobbyhandyman  3 года назад +2

      Great question. The bearings on this particular trailer and many utility/boat trailers I have come across are part of an EZ lube hub. As you pump the grease in it pushes the old grease out so it would be difficult to over grease it. The way they are designed prevents pressure from building up. I push the grease through until I see the clean grease start to come out. I then wipe off the excess.

    • @gregdinn5571
      @gregdinn5571 3 года назад +1

      Thank-you for the reply. I have bearing buddies on a boat trailer and a utility trailer. Up to this point I have had both serviced by professionals because of the limited use of each. Is it safe to assume that while travelling at highway speeds, checking your bearings for temperature each time you stop and finding them cool to warm to the touch, you have no issues. Is it also safe to assume that jacking your trailer up and spinning the wheel, hearing no noise and feeling no wobble, that you have no issues. Thank-you. Greg
