Telling people to not go in the water is as stupid as telling them not to drive a car, catch a train or a plane, ride a horse, ski etc. There is inherent risk in just about everything we humans do. If you're trained and research a location before you enter the water, you can swim in the ocean and greatly reduce the risks.
The thing that distinguishes great whites from other sharks, is their real presence. They swim by and look right at you. If you've experienced this you know what I mean. Then to make things really creepy, they will pop their heads out of the water for a better look at you!
