Shaq was very genuine but Candace couldn't even look at him while he was talking, pure arrogance! Then told us how her next child that hasn't touched a basketball yet will fix the problem. Women didn't have a problem when the standards of many things were lowered to suit them, like the police force, Fire service and defence force etc. Has any female player publicly thanked the NBA for funding it or have they been too busy asking for more money. WNBA sounds a lot like marriage to me. Shaq has single handedly done more for the game and the community than the whole WNBA will ever do.
That arrogance and entitlement is a big part of the problem. Why alienate the people that actually are trying to help you? But WNBA players do it all the time.

BULL'S-EYE! Thing is, though....WNBA supporters Do Not/Will Not acknowledge to that fact! They think, just because they're playing basketball, they're just as good at entertainment as NBA/NCAA. Have seen more competitive Pick-Up games at neighborhood courts/gyms than in WNBA competition. You get out of something what you put in...Sadly, that's NOT the case in the WNBA. 25+ years in operation & only 1 year draw 10k+ fans?! IF this were a Normal business, Owners would more than likely have filed for bankruptcy....IF WNBA were "Normal" business entity....

As a woman myself, I totally agree with you lol. I love basketball, but I wouldn’t be caught dead at a WNBA game. Also, their attitudes are just awful - they give women a bad name, it’s embarrassing! They need to grow up and accept the fact that men are physically stronger than us, and that there’s nothing wrong with that. They should take Shaq’s advice, I think stuff like that would make the WNBA more entertaining.

I was a college level player at 5’11. I had a bad surgery on my left arm and crippled it. St 43 I ran across a group of all American women players. I challenged them and 2 of them played me one on one. Both were 6’. With one hand and 43 years old I destroyed both of them very easily. I laughed and went home because the other girls wouldn’t play me! They are high school level!

Let's be honest, when there are 5 missed layups in a row from 2ft away from the rim. That's garbage. Most people have more fun at a high school boys game. And I'm sure there are boys high school teams that would make WNBA teams look foolish.
Thats for sure. I don´t have a problem with women sport. In fact, sometimes its better to watch then men sports. Not often though. In Tennis in Wimbledon, the men play so fast, that there is hardly any back and forth. Women Tennis in Wimbledon is often much more fun to watch. In the end, you still wanna see, what guy is winning the title.
As mentioned, sports lives off the personalities, of the people, doing it. In Tennis, in the era of Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, etc. - many people watched them play, cause those were great rivalies.
Every decent male Highschool team with the chance (not even the top programs) to win a state title would win the WNBA title... probably without loosing even one game. Its just genetics. I grew up playing football (or soccer like you americans call it). I played with 3 girls in our kids group. Played with them from age 7 till 12 after that it wasnt allowed anymore. Cause as soon as puberty starts, females are just not on the same level anymore. And I dont mean technically, just physically!
There are several scrimmage games of national womans football teams (search for the US one for example... the one that DEMANDS equal pay to the men) playing aginst 14-15 years old boys teams... and get blown out each and every time. Now think about 16-18 years old boys playing aginst those national teams... what do you think they would do to those women? The same would happen in your comparison when good male Highschool teams would play against WNBA teams!

You nailed it. This is coming from the father of a 10byear old girl who absolutely loves playing basketball. I have an absolute blast watching my daughter and those girls play. At that age, they are learning the game, learning sportsmanship, learning how to grow their competitive spirit. Its exciting simply to watch them learn and grow and learn how to work as a team.
As you said, i like watching NCAA womens ball too. There is just something that takes away once they physically top out and rely completely on fundamentals and very little on athleticism. Its just plain boring.
The real heroes are the announcers. The fact that they can manage to keep up the facade of calling the games through missed layup after missed layup and not shoot themselves in the face out of shear frustration is a true testament to professionalism.
I'd laugh after a missed layup or even sigh if its no longer funny... they are indeed true professionals to keep straigt faces. Lowkey they need to be on wnba super max contracts for it

Well, I'm an old man and I have never seen a game. Shaq's suggestion to improve the watchability of the game was a very solid one. Make the baskets 9" high. Hell, the WNBA ball is already smaller than the NBA one.

The NBA struggled for a long time. There was the heyday of the Celtics with Russell, Cousy, Havlicek, et al, in the 60s, then the NBA almost died in the 70s, until Bird and Magic showed up in '79. They were entertaining, electrifying players. Then there was the Detroit Bad Boys and Michael Jordan and Shaq and David Robinson and Sir Charles and Hakeem, and then Kobe and LeBron and on and on.
All I ever hear out of the WNBA (when I hear anything at all) is a bunch of bitter women. Every man who's played basketball at the high school level or higher knows that no WNBA team would be competitive in any men's 4A, 5A, or 6A high school district in the country. The WNBA player's association refuses to do anything to make the game more exciting, like lowering the rim and shortening the court, and they're mostly a bunch of sullen malcontents. I mean, how many people would actually pay to spectate that sort of environment?
In short, their product just sucks.

Someone asked one of the players what the league needs more than anything. You would think she would say something like, more fans that would keep the league afloat and maybe even make a profit. No she just wanted more money for the players. That tells you all you need to know about the league.

Most women in the league are emotionally invested in the idea that women can play at the same level as men, which is why they insist on playing according to the male game's rules. A friend of mine played scholarship soccer at a big southern university. He said it's not even about physical abilities. He said the women don't have the same skills that the men do.

I have heard a few times the "women's basketball is basketball in it's purest form" and I am not sure what that means. Does it mean they are better at the basics or fundamentals? If "the way the game is supposed to be played" means slower, less coordinated, less athletic, less energetic, and lower effort then I guess but I think the purest form would be the more refined and evolved game.

I think it alludes to the ball movement, "team" mentality, and lack of 1-on-1 isolation plays. The girls aren't good enough to play isolation (i.e. 'bully ball"), and you don't see as many fast-breaks or reliance on pure athleticism to score baskets. Basically, it's less fun lmao

There's a fine line between woman's sports and men's sports. The NBA draws so much attention because of the pure athleticism it has compared to the WNBA. The slam dunks, contested buzzer beaters, half court shots, blocks etc. You don't get any of that excitement in the WNBA. It's so bland they struggle to make uncontested layups. I think there's sports for women and there's sports for men. We just need to respectfully understand the differences. The WNBA is as exciting as watching paint dry.
Yup, In gymnastics women and men compete in different skills for a reason. It’s not a bad thing it just is what it is. Not sure why so many women (mainly basketball and soccer players) get so upset by basic anatomy.
As a person who has watched paint dry, I find the comparison insulting. Have you ever seen a freshly painted wall gradually change colors as it dries and achieving its final form? My dear sir, such a scene is a thing of beauty. It is in no way comparable to watching a woman with the speed of an ENT and grace of three legged bull stumble their way across a court.
I'm not even kidding, to "support the ladies" I tried to watch a few games but couldn't help from wondering if the playback speed was off or I just kept getting the less exciting games but nope. I'm surprised they lasted this long.

Trying something new, giving something girls can aspire to, etc. However, after a quarter of a century, its way past the time to say we gave it an honest effort and it didnt work. Male athletes are just more interesting to watch. I hate to say it but it's kinda true. The atmosphere of Male sport events vs female sport events are completely different. Male sports are fast pace and overall thrilling. Females just play really slow and sometimes it looks like there not even trying.
The only female sport that garners my attention is Women's Tennis.

Obviously, you have never been to both NBA and WNBA games. The women don't play slower, they race up and down the court just like the men do, having been to dozens of NBA and WNBA games, I see no difference, they are both very fast paced games, this doesn't translate well on TV for both the men and women's game, but seeing it live, I see the women playing just as fast and hard as the men.
Look at the crowd, there’s clearly more men than women. Gentlemen, we’re doing a lot and not getting the appreciation. We really need to tone it down.

The return on investment isn’t as consistent. Why do LeBron, Steph, KD and Giannis get paid millions? Because it’s easy to market around them. If the WNBA doesn’t have someone to market the entire league around, especially someone they can market to a non-diehard basketball fan casual audience, they’re screwed.
Why would they want to pay people more when they already lose money on said investment? I’d say anyone with a brain would want to pay them less and make it a financially successful business before ever thinking of raising their salary

Basically the product is not good enough. They may need to lower the goal by 0.5-1 ft to allow more players to dunk. That's part of the entertainment of basketball. Their official wnba ball is smaller to allow their smaller hands to handle the ball better. Same goes with other sports like golf. They play on a shorter distance towards the hole. Lowering the goal would definitely help their sport.
I think it's funny that the tallest women in the wnba can barely dunk, whereas there are junior high school gyms filled with sub 6 foot boys that can dunk two handed.

The crazy part of all this is that the general collective of people (players, administrations, the NBA, ESPN and everyone else associated with the sport) can't or won't understand that this was, is and will continue to be a bad product. Stop trying to force us to believe that it's a viable sporting event, either to watch in person or on TV. At the end of the day it's about entertainment. Entertainment that sells= The consumer wants to be you or sleep with you. Very few people want to sleep with or be these studs that play "fundamental" basketball. That may sound harsh, but we all know it's true. Lowering the rims, I get can be seen as a gimmick to some, but it would add some oohs and aahs to the game, which is needed since the WNBA lacks the main drivers for entertainment that sells.

I played one year of organized basketball growing up when I was a kid. Basketball wasn't my thing, I played football and baseball and eventually golf where I played in college. I would still play some pick-up games and used to shoot around a lot for fun. In my mid 30's a few of us got a wild hair and decided to play in a local 6'2 and under rec league, where there were quite a few teams that had guys that played some college ball. I guarantee if a couple of those teams we played against could have played in the WNBA they would have torn through the league.
Someone did the math, and without the NBA help if a WNBA player would make a salary based on their actual profit, each WNBA player would have to pay $80k😂
