Entymology of Deutsch and Deutschland is pretty well explained in the Wikipedia article Theodiscus.
In short it derived from the west germanic theudisk, wich means of the people or of the natives/inhabitants. From there it formed over the time and development of the german language over diutisk to duits to deutsch. Thus development can be seen in the danish and norwgian word tysk for Deutsch and in Dutch it would be Duits.
The French Allemagne comes from the german tribe Allemannen with who they had first contact.
PS: the Pennsylvania Dutch came from the south german area of Rhienland-Palatinate, Baden, Württemberg and Switzerland.

@@AP-RSI Stereotypes aren't facts. Just three examples:
      - David Hasselhoff had one big hit in 1989 here - that is now 35 years ago and a whole new generation grew up never having heard of him. There might still be fans of him in the older generation, but saying he is still popular here, is downright wrong.
      - The German state is called "Lower Saxony", not not "West Saxony".
-John F. Kennedy's quote from his Berlin visit was put into a wrong context by the New York Times, and it's been passed on ever since - the jam-filled doughnut many Germans call a "Berliner", is in fact called a "Pfannkuchen" in Berlin. So no, the audience wasn't laughing about him, it was applauding him and cheering.
There are more things in that video that are probably secondhand knowledge or hearsay. So no, you didn't have to live in Germany to get your facts right, but you definitely wouldn't get them right if you had.

10:25 "North America is just 2 countries". Okay, ngl... I was ready to laugh until I googled it. The US actually defines North America only as Canada and USA. So it's no wonder they thought it's two. It's just the definiton they were taught in school. The UN however counts any country as North American that is on the North American tectonic plate like Mexico, Cuba, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica etc... and I guess most nations define it like that as well.

Technically, university is not completely free in Germany. There is no tuition but there are still some fees to pay, e.g. administrative fees and the membership fee for the non-profit organization for student affairs (Studierendenwerk) and often the fees also include a part for public transportation.

Fun fact: I sat and walked over multiple WW2 bombs. As probably have other German viewers here. A friend of mine lived in building where they found bombs after tearing it down to build new stuff. To find them during construction is quite typical.
But sometimes they also have some nice findings. Archaeological findings from the bronze age happen every now and then. A couple years ago they found a burial ground during renovations for a parking lot of the local police department.

As a German the way you tell the time in the UK is confusing to me as well because it doesn't make any sense.
it is half three because the hour to three is just half done. The hand of the clock did half the way to the full hour.
    full 3 = 3 and half 3 is ofc 2:30
That's the logic behind the way we do it.

When your driver's license is suspended you don't have to get a new license. The police will just withhold your license for the suspension time and then you'll get it back. Of course there are fines for the offense, but in comparison to other European countries to fines for traffic violations are low. Usually you even can decide when the suspension starts, to certain degree, to manage things, e.g. when you need the license for work or for commuting. But if you are a complete lunatic on the road, your driver's license will be taken away from you on the spot.
And your license won't get suspended for running out of gas on the Autobahn. The fine is just 70 € and one point in the traffic violation register. Actually it is just 35 € (and no point in the register), but if you stand longer than 3 minutes on the Autobahn it is considered parking and that is 70 €. It's safe to assume you'll be standing for more than 3 minutes when you run out of gas. If this causes an accident the fine will be 105 €.
The reason why running out of gas is not an emergency is because it is easily avoidable.

31:00 Well University/ College may be "free" here (there are still some low administration fees ~300€ you gotta pay per semester) but what the Video doesn't tell you is that many courses have a numerous clausus. Which means you have to prove a certain level of academic excellence to be accepted in the first place into the course. So you could say we don't directly discriminate through money, we discriminate by academic performance. Which is more indirectly tied to money because rich kids have a lot of times better academic performance because of family tradition and less worries in their school life.

    • @Skyl3t0n
      @Skyl3t0n 4 дня назад

That's the stupidest sh't I've ever heard. Discrimination by academic perfomance 😂
Yes your workplace also discriminates against lazy and low performance workers by paying them less.
That's exactly the opposite of dicrimination. It doesn't matter if your from a rich family if you can't perform in school.
Also who do you want your doctors to be? The best i assume.
The vast majority of courses doesn't even have a NC. But fact is that there isn't infinite capacity and this is the most efficient filtering.
Not only that but have you ever heard of Harvard? Try getting into those types of colleges with just money. It's not a foreign concept anywhere in the world.

Why did Great Britain call Deutschland Germany ? Why do Germany call them ‚Grossbritannien‘ ? and the USA =‚die Vereinigte Staaten von Amerika‘ ? The longest word in German being "Donaudampfschifffahrts..." is a joke, btw. It's some meta humour where germans make fun of their own language, which is otherwise quite tame in comparison. Well, at least when it comes to annoying grammar and spelling. Our compound words are often even shorter than the english translations: e.g. a tooth brush becomes Zahnbürste. Instead of having two words for that one thing we use only one word for the exact same thing; and it has the same amount of letters.

When it comes to names. What he says is just partly correct. When it comes to name-giving in Germany the following rules must be followed:
    1. the name must be recognized as a first name
    2. the first name must be recognized as male or female (lets see how long we keep this one) // you can use a gender neutral first name but in that case you need a second name that clearly states the gender.
    3. no fantasy names ergo no words you come up yourself (seen Elon)
    4. no names a child would be ridiculed for
    5. no religious names like Judas, Satan, Gott etc.
    6. no clear last names can be changed to first names // there are many last names that are the same as many first names so you can have 2 first names which you see many times (e.g. Karl Friedrich)
    7. you can have up to 5 first names.
    8. in the end you give it a try. If your civil registry office accepts the name you're fine. Some of these will probably change over the years.

The word "Deutsch" (and of ourse the word "Dutch" too) is much older an means "The People" or "The Public". So Deutschland means the land of us people I guess.

Spencer as a common american Name would be fine.
But the video makes the mistake to assume some specific rules for names, it is rather a case by case decision.
These decisions must all follow the principle of: "Could the kid be embarrassed by the name in the future or discriminated against in the future".
Which highly depends on the Zeitgeist, culture of the family and the arguments the parents can make.
So naming a German kid Müller Meyer wouldn't fly. Calling an kid with American Parents Spencer? Probably no problem.
Calling your Kid Daenerys or Khallissy because right now Game of Thrones is the Hype? Highly depend on the person at the buero making the decision. Also Daenerys could be an exotic sounding name. Khalissy would be rather not because it isn't even a Name, it is a title.
Calling Your name AEX1242? Clear no, poor kid.

Germania = Latin. Why should we use a Latin name when we have one that tells you which LANGUAGE we speak ?? And since Americans had difficulties pronouncing the word
"Deutsch" they changed it to the easier " Dutch " for the American " Germans ".
And those different names for Germany come from the Germanic TRIBAL names those European countries came in contact with = Alemannen = Alemania (dropped an "n") or Alemagne . Alemannen lived in the South East hence the Spanish and French name and Sachsen or Saxons lived in the North East hence the Finnish Saksa.
And you, dear Americans, speak a Germanic language originating from Lower Saxony and parts of the Netherlands = Anglo-Saxon aka ENGLISH !!!
And don't let me get started on the fact that the Romans/Italians came in contact with a tribe called Tedesci !! And every Slavic language has a form of NEMEC = Deutsch in their own Slavic language.

Naturism/FFK is not quite an east thing, as the first "FFK-Verien" was founded in the early 1920s on Sylt. By the 1930 dozens of naturist-clubs existed all over Germany.
The difference between East and West German Naturism of today may come form the way ppl viewed nudity as howl, also from how the way the relationship between nudity and sexuality was perceived differently in the two Germanys. Since it's quite hard to show ones "wealth/class and define oneself on that" in the nude, the west "my car, my house, my yard"-style of thinking was on oods with it; whilst in the east it was a away to "strip off" the system. ^^
Naturists can be found in the middle of the English Garden in Munich since the 1970s. ^^

Achool closing mskes no sence smaler clases are proven to bring our better edjucated childrean than packed classes the school closings where a mistske at least half of em
There are alsonother factors than carrer focoust people
Bad politics overwilled schools picky job market raising prices for living space (we hsve tonregulste it doen god damit) if u csnt even dind a plsce tonlive forbur own how can u find an agordable place for family planing there is alot ofnthings wrong with out job market housing msrked (even if not as bad as usa) and school systhem and many people simply dont want to make a child to deal with all this
At least that was one of my reasons the other is i am trans male
But for example lack in auitsble living space is a reason me and my partner wont adopt one
And yes from an americsn expat point of view its so much better here for familys
Fron the point of an edjucadet german thst grew up in this outdated systhem not so much
Better thsn the usa but not good enougg to have a good feeling for planing on a child
