Congratulations on your fabric line! That’s such an amazing adventure. I can’t wait to get my hands on some of your prints. The florals are just superb and I absolutely love the sewing machines.
This was awesome! Thank you. I'm an absolute beginner in this game... I'm still learning Adobe Illustrator! The information in your video was extremely helpful. Thanks
Thank you so much! I am planning on studying textile designing and this video helped me understand a lot of things I was very confused about how to design fabric! I love your designs they are beautiful
@@Mellysews For the patterns, is it possible if I can use Prisma colored pencils to design them? I plan on drawing my patterns lightly with a pencil, then I will color them in with the colored pencils, and then I will scan them using my printer. Or maybe I can draw patterns using ink or fine liners? Because I am not very good at using watercolor paint or any other kind of paint in general so I was wondering if that could be an option

First, l love watercolors, and your initial flowers are so pretty. The program used to develop your prints looks like fun, once you understand it. Wow, a fabric line with Riley Blake...woohoo!
congrats! your collection is beautiful! i, too love your 1st watercolours. lesson is awesome btw, i love hearing and seeing the development side. well done:)
I loved your collection! I am in search of tools to create designs for cloth diaper PUL. I hope I can make use of the information you provided. Thank you for really informative content.
absolutely amazing ! just came across your video tutorial - can you do a class on Skillshare - covering this in more detail - I love your overview and while there are how to classes elsewhere - I love how you explain how you double check a repeat (genius); and how and why you scale vs type of fabric - I do art/learning surface pattern - thank you :) - fyi: lack of classes in the background to pattern design and real world stuff - thank you :)
Thanks for sharing this video!!! I’m a brand new surface pattern designer and stumbled upon your video. I’m a long time sewer and mostly made my own sewing patterns. I’ve just browsing through your channel and I think I might learn new things. Are you going to share anything related to surface pattern design? I’m working on my portfolio at the moment to hopefully pitch in next year. Any tips and tricks for me? Thanks a lot!!!
This is beautiful and thanks for insight. But how do you get the manufacturer/Riley Blake to buy it from you? Did you just email the company with images? I guess I'm asking how do you get your designs published? What's the protocol for that? Thanks!
I have a contract with them. The process is the same as getting a design contract with any company - you'd want to build a portfolio first, and then either get an agent or network to find the creative director contacts within the industry you want to work in. It also helps if you have an audience full of fans of your work - creative directors like licensing designs that have a built in audience to market to.
@@Mellysews thank you so much for your prompt reply. A million years ago I had a career as a mystery novelist (under the name Rett MacPherson) and had a literary agent for that. So where would I look for a design agent? Thank you again!
This is perfect! I have a project where I need to do exactly what you have done. Do you have some material going in depth on exactly how you set up your canvas, what functions you use to move them around to ensure it matches, how to smooth edges, how to change the colour profiles etc. I'm still feeling a little lost and not sure what to do, or is there even a course online you could recommend? :)
Hello! Thanks for sharing this helpful video, I was wondering if you could share, where do you send the designed images? I’m looking for an inexpensive company to do that. Thank you!
I have a contract with a fabric company that I design for, so that wouldn't be applicable to your question. For personal fabric printing you could look at MyFabricDesigns.com but none of the custom fabric companies are inexpensive as it's costly in terms of labor to print small quantities of custom fabric.
@@Mellysews Hello, I love your designs! I chose actually picked your designs up for the company I used to work for as a quilting fabric to use. I quit my job as my mother and I want to design fabric independently. I was wondering since COVID-19 has cancelled all conventions and Quilt Market, how have designers been showing their fabric to companies for them to buy? We missed out last year and it sounds like everything is canceled for this year too.
Hello, nice to meet you. From Japan , thank you for sharing your experience nice video? First time on your channel. Can you show how to reduce down the colors after you input the image to adobe illustrator? I’m not sure if possible .
Thank you for this video, it's very useful as I am just starting to paint designs for fabrics. I use watercolors too and I was wondering ..could you briefly name some of the Photoshop features you use to simplify the colors & color variations please? Thanx
Which tool I use honestly depends on the image I'm working with, so my best advice would be to do a photoshop course to familiarize yourself with all of them.
Love it! Where do you have your designs printed? I'm looking for places that would agree to print only 3 meters of my work, but I can't find any. They say the minimum is 10 meters.
Hi, I'm a beginner textile designer learning basically from work but we use nedgraphics. I find it so much easier to use nedgraphics, I am wondering if you ever used that program instead of photoshop? I dont know how to really do repeats on photoshop but after watching some videos I find it to be much more difficult. My question should I take the time to learn how to do it on photoshop for future jobs? Is photoshop the industry standard for surface design?
I did not do formal training for textile design, and I am not familiar with that program. I also don't do my repeats in photoshop, I prefer to use Illustrator, as do the majority of the other fabric designers I know.
Once you brought your artwork into Illustrator, did you turn your painting into a vector first (live trace?) or did you keep it pixels from photoshop? Thanks and love this video!
@@Mellysews Thanks so much for this video! Would you consider a more detailed instructive video on this question? I would be very interested to learn more :)
This video is super helpful. I'm appreciate! but I have one question, Is this is the only way to color separation for water color drawing? It will be nice if there are other way. on photoshop, with out simplify like you did on illustrator. keep original watercolor texture, but colors are separate. can you give me some advice?
No, this isn't meant to be a comprehensive class, just an overview of my process. I'd suggest a Photoshop specific course, there are always multiple ways to do things within these programs.
Hello Melly! I just found your channel and your beautiful designs. It is a very useful video, thanks a lot! I have a question. When you work on your I pad and use a watercolor brush, do you always vectorize it on Illustrator? Im finding quite hard to keep the watercolor effect after vectorizing it. Can you use it just as it is done in the iPad, or that wouldn't work well when printing on fabric? I hope to get your answer :)
HI Melissa, great video. Thank you for sharing. I wanted to ask how do you reduce the number of colours in photoshop from the original watercolour scan to limit the number of colours. What is the process, can you please explain? Thank you.
It depends, I'd suggest familiarizing yourself with different options in Photoshop. This video is not meant to be a step by step tutorial, this is just a behind the scenes look at how I personally put my personal art on the fabric I design.
I have a problem if someone can help pls, how do i design the print so its positioned right after i sew the shirt( ex i want a lion to be in the middle of the back of the shirt. How can i make that happen if i want to print the fabric before sewing)

With my fabric, I'm limited to 16 colors, so I have to eliminate some of the gradient or do it by spacing out dots of color.
Is one always limited in 16 colors, or is just with vompany you choose to collaborate with. Agneta Hallberg
