  • In centrifugation, we use the force exerted by rotational motion in order to separate out components of a mixture that have different weights. This is very useful in separating components of a solution that are too light to be separated by sedimentation. We take some muddy water whose heavier particles have already been removed via sedimentation and a solution of calcium hydroxide. Fill two test tubes with muddy water and two test tubes with calcium hydroxide and place all four test tubes in the centrifuge machine as shown. After the machine is rotated for some time, we remove the test tubes and see that we get a precipitate of soil in the muddy water test tubes and a white precipitate in the calcium hydroxide test tubes with clear water on top in all the test tubes. The centrifugal force depends on the mass of the particles and the speed of rotation. With fast rotation even light particles get forced down to the bottom of the test tube as precipitate.

    So,literally centrification is based on the principle that "faster the rate of rotation, faster will be the process of sedimentation"

      If I understand the math,, at twice the G forces, it settles 4 times as fast, 3 times the G forces 9 times as fast, etc. I don't have a centrifuge to try though.

    Question, if I wanted to separate a lot of the nitrogen out of the air (to increase the oxygen percentage), would that process be only a tiny fraction of the overall energy that is produced when that air is burned with fuel in say an internal combustion engine or wood burning stove, or would you have to add energy to make that happen?
    I googled it and O2 is 23% denser than N2, if that helps. They are 1.4291 grams/liter for O2 and 1.1606 g/l for O2.

    Hi i hope that this question can be answered. I was wondering, what is the difference between a centrifuge and a cyclone? More specifically from the perspective of water treatment, what is the difference between a centrifuge decanter from a hydrocyclone?

    thank you for the video. IT explained a lot but I have confusion about how the centrifuge separates the solid particles.
    I mean, Are the solid particles pulled to the bottom "because they are heavier" or "because they spin faster"?

    • @thedamsnackbar2506
      @thedamsnackbar2506 2 года назад +4

      Because they are heavier

    • @absolute___zero
      @absolute___zero 2 года назад

      before using this method you have to be sure that there is no matter in the water that has higher density than water itself. for example , tiny plastic particles o oil will be captured by your filter and brought up as if they were water. would be good for purifying rainwater but not water from industrial waste

    How does one separate a liquid of multiple particles such as spores mixed with mycelium fragments. What force and liquid mixture would I need to use to separate the living tissue from the spores? Because so far all of the particles settle together as a mix even though there density is different.
