Growing and Tasting Longan Fruits

  • A bit of an experiment to grow some Longan fruit trees from seed which I took from fruit from the store. This is my first time trying the fruit, so I'm going to let you know what it's like as well. Watch until to end to see the results of the experiment using different sprouting methods.
    Longans are a tropical fruit and are a member of the soapberry family (Sapindaceae). They share this family with lychee, rambutan, guarana, korlan, pitomba, Genip and ackee.

    you can also grow them in just water. fill a cup with water and let it sit for around a few weeks. it should pop out a little root, im doing that way right now.
    if it sinks in the water that means there’s life in the seed by the way :)

    Definitely like Longans. Not my favorite fruit ever, but really like them and they produce a ton of fruit on a relatively small tree.

    I had these while backpacking in Thailand! Definitely the best fruit I tried while I was there. We stayed at a hostile with several of these trees growing in the back.

    The subtropical/tropical Longan, guarana, rambutan and lychee all being to the Sapindaceae family, which explains the superficial resemblance (in terms of seed and leaf morphology) to horse chestnut, aka 'conker trees', buckeye and sweet chestnut (which are trees native to northern hemisphere). I have done the 'plant a pip' thing with all manner of fruits bought from supermarkets: mangoes, citrus, starfruit, lychee, avocado, etc, but whilst these endeavours yielded pretty houseplants, the novelty effect wore off when I came to the realisation that they'd most likely never bear fruit. Nowadays, I buy subtropical and tropical fruit trees from nurseries; these plants are named cultivars produced by grafting, cuttings or airlayering. These stand a much better chance of bearing fruit in containers/pots (I live in the rather untropical England, so planting subtropical and tropical fruit trees in the ground is not an option. My nursery-bought citrus (all grafted), tamarillo (produced by cutting) and 'Nam Doc Mai' mango (grafted) have all flowered and fruited in containers. Compare to my 8 year old 6ft tall lemon tree from a supermarket lemon, which has never fruited. I suppose that seeds can produce rootstocks for grafting onto scions of named cultivars. I'd imagine that if I rooted cuttings from my grafted citrus and my tamarillo, they'd be very likely to yield fruit within a short time frame and at a compact size. I am going to give this a try.

    It's always fun to grow things from pits and seeds of fruits. As you probably are aware, many don't grow true from seed and you really need to graft from a known variety. BUT, it's fun anyway. I have recently tried longan myself and I have to say they are quite addictive. Can't seem to get enough. I am in the US and we get them in the stores in June/July. They may come up from Florida or maybe from Mexico. I'm trying to grow them too. They seem slower from seed than litchis. Also, just tried rambutan and will grow a few of those from seed as well. They're all related.

      Awesome. Would love to see updates on my facebook page with how you go with it. Yes, sadly a lot don't grow true to type, but some do and it's always interesting to wonder what you might end up with in the future even if it is a little dissimilar to the original :)

    Lychees are very similar but to me more tasty. Longans and Lychees and other exotic fruits can be found in International supermarkets here in Arizona, USA. They are fairly expensive. Plants grown from the seeds will take many years to bear fruit and they may never produce fruit.

    Are you in Oz? Look up Daleys Fruit (they have a RUclips channel and online nursery). I wish they ship internationally to the UK, but even if they did, the combined cost of phytosanitary certificate and shipping costs (on top of the cost of the plants themselves) would be astronomical! Still, their RUclips videos are a useful source of information on growing subtropicals and tropicals.

    3:16 I wonder which method is better. Just because the pot method is slower, doesn't mean its worse. They could turn out to be much healthier and heavier fruiting trees.
    A microwave cooks food faster, but that doesn't mean it is the superior way to cook food.

    Do you need to water the paper towel often
    Or you just seal it in the bag and never touch it ?

    • @TheKiwiGrower
      @TheKiwiGrower  4 года назад

      If the bag is sealed the moisture should stay in so no need to water anymore. If the seed goes mouldy I would give it a good clean off and change the paper towel. If it continues to go mouldy I would throw the seed away and try again with a new seed. Good luck! :)

      Hey, sadly with moving up to the city I wasn't able to keep many of my plants so I no longer have the coconut:/. I'm looking at having another go at it, however my climate is not suitable to grow it to a mature tree. Looking forward to growing lots of other cool stuff though :)

    • @Kyle-sg4rm
      @Kyle-sg4rm 6 лет назад

      There are some coconut palms that grow and produce nuts in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuwara_Eliya#Climate where it tends to be more mild than other places where they generally grow. Importing seeds from somewhere like that could be the go! And they can actually handle cold weather and even frost division2news.blogspot.com/2008/04/what-lovely-bunch-of-coconuts-in.html But obviously they grow alot faster with more consistent 18 C+ temps. A micro-climate with dark coloured heat absorbing rocks, a wall or trees to diffuse the southerly winds etc would help. I'm currenly working on a compost heated outdoor "heat wall" which will radiate out heat from inside the thin, hollow, heat conductive "shell". Overhanging leaves of bananas etc will help the pocket of warm air linger. An outdoor compost heat-pump is also a possibility. Both ideas based on this kinda system: oi37.tinypic.com/qxkhvd.jpg Either heat convection, or a small fan.
      Heated pathways would be next level... :)

      From a Purdue article about longan, if you trim some of the flower branch and then trim some of the fruit branch, you will have bigger fruit. It is because the tree can focus more of its energy to support a smaller amount of fruit.
