I really liked Sam’s character and how he dealt with struggles and trauma. It was genuine and described how many people would react to bad times: the world doesn’t revolve around you, keep your head down and work. Not sure if its healthy, but many ppl subscribe to that philosophy and Zevin portrayed it well.

hear this completely! it can occasionally be difficult for me to discern between a poorly written character & and character who is well written but who i disagree with morally/behaviorally. sam falls in the latter; he is so real but at times i just wanted to shake him.

i agree w so many of your points - the miscommunication drove me crazy and also the way certain traumatic events were handled. like how Sadie’s abortion was just thrown in there at some point without really adding to the story or character- i actually thought i hallucinated it because it was barely acknowledged afterwards?? 😭 also marx felt too perfect of a person, he had no flaws and was only charming. i think maybe zevin did that to make his death hit harder?? but it just made him feel more distant for me. still gave it a 3.5 bc i am a sucker for the video game aspect hehe, anyways loved hearing your thoughts 🫶

ahh thank you for watching!! 💌
i agree with you on sadie’s trauma; i also didn’t realize marx didn’t have any flaws the whole book, that’s so interesting!!
right there with you, i thought it was an incredible book despite the flaws (and the flaws open good discussion, which i really like!), and SO unique. it definitely has stuck with me!

Dov struck me as a red flag the moment he was introduced as a teacher telling his students about getting off.
I also found it interesting that the two young teen shooters represented Sam's resentment towards Mark over "taking" Sadie from him. The teen who blew his head had the same upset over losing a girlfriend to someone else in their game. I just couldn't understand why Mark had to become the subject of this misplaced wrath and die.

yes that was such a red flag!!
that’s an interesting take on the shooters, i hadn’t thought of that! i agree though, i don’t think mark had to die

This has been sitting on my shelf for a minute, I need to pick it up (especially if you can compare it to Dark Matter 👀). I really loved your commentary on cozy gaming 💛 soo true-they’re such a great form of escapism. Loved this nuanced review!

the comparison to dark matter is a loose one- they evoke similar questions but are completely different ~vibes~
thank you for watching!! 💌💌💌 happy you loved :,)

Yessss I agree with everything you said in this vid except the second person chapter I felt like it pulled me out of the book rather than drawing me in but nonetheless great vid!

that makes sense! when i was talking to my best friend (who recommended me this book!) she told me she saw a few reviews online that said this.
definitely a bold choice by the author!

Your review was very helpful. I keep hearing a lot about this book and how good it is but hearing your lists of Ls made me realize that is really not a book for me (lack of communication, missing consent, and the trigger worning list) + I don't really like contemporary books. You expressed your thoughts really well and clear. I'm looking forward for your next videos/reviews. I now read Amatka by Karin Tidbeck and and for me is very interesting and engaging, even tho the majority might find it boring. You can see if you like it.
