I think the Mental Game of Baseball and Mental ABCs of Pitching are two of the best baseball books that every player should read. The mind tells the body what to do, and there should be a focus on mental preparation and training, just as there is on the physical/mechanical side. As Dan said, skim it and read sections of the book, and find what works for you. I think 80% (or more) of the games are won from the neck up, and many games are won or lost before you ever get to the field. I tell players the game is hard enough without putting pressure on yourself. Focus on the task at hand. In Jamie Moyer's book, he related a conversation with Mr. Dorfman after a bad outing. Moyer was recounting all the things that went wrong like not getting a strike call on a close pitch, change up wasn't working, etc. When he was done, Mr. Dorfman asked him, "So what are you going to do about it?" In talking with Mr. Dorfman, Moyer realized he had not followed his normal preparation routine, and it affected his mental preparation. From then on, he learned he needed to follow his routine as close as possible and not let the distractions or interruptions affect his preparation. Usually his bad outings were due to not following his normal mental and physical preparation routines as closely as he should have.
I heard about that book roughly a year ago on another RUclips channel. As a coach it was full of almost every life lesson I’ve learned from someone coach at some point in my life. Highly recommend it along with Mind Gym. Mind Gym is a short read and applicable to all sports not just baseball.
