- 🏏Bodyline Series Cricket: Larwood versus Woodfull, Bradman and Oldfield
In the third test of the 1932-33 Ashes ‘Bodyline’ series at the Adelaide Oval in January 1933, England fast bowler Harold Larwood dominated the Australian batting line-up hitting captain Bill Woodfull in the chest, dismissing Don Bradman cheaply and fracturing wicket-keeper Bert Oldfield’s skull.

_"Very sorry about that, Bert."_ -Harold Larwood.
_"Don't be sorry Harold. I didn't react in time."_ -Bert Oldfield.
A game for Officers, and Gentlemen.
Bradman of course The Greatest of All Time plus Larwood had such a beautiful action.
Larwood is fiece lethal bowler having no mercy on Australian batsman. No helmet and chest guard.
Can you imagine facing hostile 90 mph plus without a helmet and body armour. Those Aussie batsmen were warriors alright.
aussie's couldn't handle harolds bowling, what a hero.
The Bodylind field wasn't even in place when Woodfull or Oldfield were hit. Was just good short bowling!
Definitely only a short-leg in place for Woodfull but camera angles (on top of the Adelaide scoreboard) show there was a three-man leg-trap in place for Oldfield and a deep backward square-leg...so not a full ‘Bodyline’ field but Jardine and Larwood weren’t exactly bowling at the ‘top-of-off’ to Oldfield.
@@theknightwatchman I didn't know there was other footage of them, those are the only angles we see on TV. I do believe after hitting Woodfull, o believe Jardine did set a Bodyline field next ball. I get it was a different style of game back then, as you said they weren't attacking the top of off stump.
@Cameron Barclay Yeah, that’s pretty much been confirmed re Woodfull and even Jardine regrets making that decision. If you search ‘Oldfield Bodyline’ there should be still images from the rear angle of Oldfield being struck with the leg-trap in place. It was pretty much a short-leg, leg gully and leg slip. There was also a weird position close to the non-stricker batsman on the legside. Oldfield was on 42 when he was hit, so they were definitely trying to get him out by any means.
@@cameronbarclay7076 You’ve inspired me to do another video, I might cut all the different angles together because it’s still a bone of contention.
@@theknightwatchman That would be awesome, if there's wide shots with leg theory in place. Maybe use some arrows and squiggly lines like today's commentary box do to explain what Jardine was trying to achieve. Just a thought👍
🏏💕Not for nothing Sir Don Bradman became great! Even he had to bear all this stuff to prove himself
great❤️!🏏After all he was an Army Personnel in those days.He must hv faced&survived some bullets too during his playing days! 🏏❤️May his tribe increase!! 🏏💕🌹
Bradman found a way out n scored two centuries in that series yet aussies lost 1 to 4
Just a fantastic fast bowler in action
He was the fastest bowler
Nobody complained when the Windies were knocking us over in the 80s and Thompson and Lillee in the 70s!!
Fantastic! Even those days there was so much crowd!? Look at the type of fast bowling without helmet etc ! It's just like facing bullets in world war -1 or 2!? But these guys were also so strong&well built like Paton Tanks, Saala!!👍
It was a great era of cricket 🏏
Well bowled Harold 👏 Excellent leg theory
Oldfield had batted for 2 hours so he was not exactly considered a tail-ender, some short pitched bowling to him would have been entirely justified in any era. Fortunately his injury was minor and he sat out the next match but returned for the one after. Oldfield getting hit was the turning point of the series, it was 1-1 after 2 matches and Australia creeping up toward matching Englands score, once Oldfield got retired hurt it all fell apart for Australia. England got the psychological advantage and held it for the remainder of the series.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you ☺️
Poor Oldfield, almost died!
Yes, fractured his skull. Very close to killing him.
Hardcore
There should have been a voiceover that which batsman is getting injured by larwood's deadly spell, as it is very difficult to recognize the batsman from a far distance
They were in order of the title. It’s a good point though, I’ll remember for next time 🙂
This shows me viv richards was the best !Taking on monsters of speed like lilee,Thompson and others. Without a helmet too @
There’s no real secret to this - Larwood was simply the fastest bowler of his time and the Aussies couldn’t cope with it.
Fast leg theory had a little something to do with it. But Larwood was the man of the series, no doubt. Boycott said England couldn't have won the Ashes back without him in the attack.
Definitely the fastest ..wickets too were uncovered and offerred assistance
@@windigo44 of course not. Larwood was the main protagonist ..they had other bowlers but not of his calibre
I can only go by these old films, but it looks like fast bowling undoes the Australians. No real bodyline field of six blokes close in on leg side, which is a bit puzzling
Throughout the 1920s, when most of the Australian batsmen were establishing themselves, the pitches around Australia were notoriously flat and there were very few bowlers with genuine pace: perhaps Ted McDonald and Jack Gregory in the ‘20s and Eddie Gilbert and Laurie Nash in the 1930s. The Australian were certainly caught off-guard by Larwood’s pace in ‘32-33 as they we so unused to it.
The Aussies whinged because they couldn't bat against Larwood and Bradman was struggling...so the MCC told them to stop bowling leg theory so the Aussie and Bradman would score runs. Poor Larwood was the scapegoat and didn't play for England again even though he continually topped the County averages....shameful
Its a wonder nobody lost their life in that series
Even lillee n thommo bowled v v fast in 1974 to 1977 era but they didnt fell any batsmen. They just got them out
Yes indeed. Both Woodfull and Oldfield could have died from their injuries, it was a matter of millimetres and milliseconds away from that.
Use your bat!!
