- Debra Murphree claims that Swaggert paid her $20 on many occasions for various sexual encounters. Swaggert's infamous "I have sinned" speech was the result of getting caught with Murphree.
On October 11, 1991, Swaggart was found in the company of a prostitute for a second time. He was pulled over by a police officer in Indio, California, for driving on the wrong side of the road. With him in the vehicle was a woman named Rosemary Garcia. According to Garcia, Swaggart had stopped to proposition her on the side of the road. She later told reporters, "He asked me for sex. I mean, that's why he stopped me. That's what I do. I'm a prostitute." This time, rather than confessing to his congregation, Swaggart told those at Family Worship Center that "The Lord told me it's flat none of your business." Swaggart's son Donnie then announced to the stunned audience that his father would be temporarily stepping down as head of Jimmy Swaggart Ministries for "a time of healing and counseling."

For this exact reason, Billy Graham stated that he never, ever met with a woman or had any kind of meeting with a female alone. There was always someone else there, because he did not want anyone bringing up any false accusations about him. That was his rule.

I remember watching Good Day with my grandmother on Boston Channel 5. She and John Willis - both Class Acts. Eileen was on the show the longest. Always treated all respectively. Really admired her style. I was older when this interview first aired, (forgot all the details). Two big television preachers brought themselves down - no one else’s fault but their own, (shame they hurt so many people in the process).

She handled that interview very well. I guess also it’s a lesson to me with my past sexual immorality and thoughts that it’s so easy as a Christian to fall into the trap of sexual sin. I won’t judge, because even though I hate what Swaggert did, I still have my own sin to contend with.

The caller did well. See, we must condemn the act, and insist on the right thing being done. But all through it, we must not do one thing wrong when judging a wrong or crime done by anyone at all whether clergy or laity. The reason is always one, tomorrow, it could be you. So do what is right when addressing a wrong done by someone.
The interviewer was spectacular. She is genuinely interested in the conversation and asking relevant questions. The conversation was relaxed and not forced. The media today should use this interview as an exemplar.

This was the way interviews used to be. It wasn't opinion based but fact based and investigative. Research and relevant questions. Now interviewers weave personal opinion to sway others. They push a narrative. Ex: Peter Jennings
Punished, I don't think so. She was only critical of some of the suspicious coincidences, and asked the right questions. It doesn't really take anything away from the "evangelist's" depravity.

That's a little tragic that the interviewer didn't want to delve into that more. That first Swaggart prostitute scandal was everywhere, covered by all the regular press, and all the tabloid. This is the first time I've ever heard that he was trying to groom the mother to bring the underage daughter in. So this was obviously covered up. I'm a bit surprised they didn't clip it out, that the mother was trying to get that detail out once and for all.
She is actually well spoken & appears sound-minded. I mean she looks like a pleasant kindergarten teacher.

He's still a good preacher and teacher in spite of temptations like anyone else. We would've never heard about it,if he wasn't popular. Regardless of associated negativity preaching and teaching has been his life style. We all wear hats different from our profession. Spiritual, corporate, political, professional etc.
This is one of the most down-to-earth interviews like this I’ve ever seen. Both women were just being themselves and sharing the truth. Strange that this interview is rather refreshing, compared/contrasted to the interviews of today. It really speaks to how despicably exploitive the media is today.

Truth is, Christians have no authority to say any such weighty spiritual things without Scripture saying it first. Sometimes Christians can be wrong.
The problem is getting all choked up over a nine-yr old but a lost continent of adult savages doesn't get people that upset. It's tragic any are lost. The problem on this admittedly difficult subject is man sees things his way and asks essentially why all can't be saved when, if people knew and bowed to Scripture, we'd ask (knowing unholy, fallen man cannot occupy heaven with Holy God without redemption and blood of Christ) why does He save ANY? Remember Romans: "There is none that is righteous; no, not one." Romans is speaking of humanity, generally and that includes children. Tough subject and God is sovereign.
If there's some carve-out under "age of accountability" idea, fine with me. I just don't see it in Scripture. There are verses pointed to in support of such a teaching but I've never found it to persuasive. But maybe myself and others have missed a hidden truth in Holy Writ that ultimately supports just such a doctrine. I'm limited by my humanity, too, and I'd like to believe it. But espousing it without Biblical support (to best of my understanding, hopefully with help of Holy Spirit)...a Christian of conscience can't do it.

You are exactly right. We are warned for good reason, we will know them by their fruit. Not every tv preacher is like that, but America has made an industry of mega churches and very rich celebrity preachers. I admire certain preachers who kept it humble. David Maines, 100 Huntley Street (Canada), kept a carpenters wage for himself, based on what he figured Jesus and several apostles made. Which Maines said was comfortable to raise a family. he had no scandals that I know of. He was more the era of Swaggart, so many might not know of him, though I'm pretty sure 100 Huntley Street is still running w/ other ministers. Francis Chan is a a modern day preacher, and when his church was going mega, and things were getting too comfortable, he completely walked away from the church he built up. he never saw it as his anyway. Chan started from scratch, where ever the Lord wanted to lead him. So many thought he was crazy for giving up what had become such a cushy gig. Chan apparently felt like it had all become chains, and that he wasn't being used by God in a dramatic enough way.

That man got so unbelievably arrogant. I have a friend who is obsessed w/ his ministry and saturates herself in it, literally day and night. Swaggart apparently has a whole network, not just a show anymore. She was trying to get me hooked, and I could barely stand the sight of the man. He's saying the wildest things lately, and why not? His cult followers will pardon him literally anything. If he had a Jeffry Dahmer scandal, I don't think it would slow most of them down one bit.

Hundreds of years before Christ was born his crucifixion was described in detail. His death was the sacrifice for all mankind. It was terrible yet he did it and was miraculously raised from the dead by the power of God, exactly as he predicted. You can do nothing to pay for your sin debt, and you don't need to! Christ was your sacrifice, and he is your redeemer. Just BELIEVE.

Very sad. No one can fathom the depth of the effect of sin with all human beings. I think as I have watched Jimmy Swaggert back than and now as he has a church on TV that it is easy to be filled with religious pride, but that is complicated in how it takes root in ministers especially. He was brazen in his remarks against Jim Bakker and others, how he could do the things he did shocks many. I feel very concerned for the many people who left their faith in God because of his actions. It shook my box quite a bit when it all happened. But I know the power of God to save and to FORGIVE, so it does not surprise me NOW he has a thriving ministry. His son Donnie is a great preacher, also his grandson Gabriel. It is always going to be a sad commentary of his ministry no matter how many years go by. Yet God is able to work through our failures. I would be very surprised if Jimmy himself does not still suffer deeply over his sins at times, he no doubt must think about the many people who were affected by his behavior. Remember however, that God knows his heart, God judges and "Vengeance is Mine says the LORD, I will repay."
People that gave up their relationship with God (backslid) will not be able to blame a single person for falling into sin when they stand before God. My bible says to go and sin no more.

This is really sad. Recently, 2 months ago l personally encounter a Sabahan Pastor & wife in a church around my home. A submissive & very helpful wife with grown up career daughter away from home. The wife told me her pastor wife never grow up. He likes to keep young single mothers daughters in his home on weekends & school holidays. With my own eyes l have seen these "adopted girls age now 17" calling him "daddy" running around the house with towels wrapped around her looking for fresh laundry clothes while the pastor, his wife & l watched the short drama. I told her out front to look for her change of clothes b4 getting under the shower. Not long later, l get them 2 new laundry basket which could only fit into a van not a 5 seater car. One for the pastor & wife, the other for single girls who borders at their home. He got the message & told me to watch my mouth. I told his wife & he checked on him. * Oh l was joking". 4 3weeks I moved to another church without telling them. When then wanted to visit me l told them straight away, "Church service l will never miss them. But WORDS do matter when members & leafers speak to me. Adoption of young females single parent's daughters should never be encourage. It the begining of any Pastor's downfall. That's the end of my meeting with that church. Just move on with the Lord. My life matters to HIM. Amen.
