    I think you need to remember that when a bill is passed anymore there is so many things attached to it. sometimes they want to pass it without even knowing what's in it. I think saying no and looking into every single bill individually is really important.

    Voting has become less about who you want to be in the seat and more about keeping out the one you don't want. Watching this debate was for me to learn if I'm voting for who I want, or if I'm voting to keep the other one out. 4 candidates on the ballot? but only two major players. If I didn't care who ended up in the seat, I'd use my vote the way it was intended.

    • @Kevin_2435
      @Kevin_2435 Год назад +4

      We need ranked choice voting in this country. If we could cast votes of diminished value for second and third choice candidates, then our primary vote for a third party would not be a throwaway vote.

    • @Kevin_2435
      @Kevin_2435 Год назад +3

      Better than ranked choice voting is replacing our first past the post system entirely with proportional representation. With that system a first election would determine each parties order of picks for Congressional seats. After that a second vote would take place without names but political parties with a proportional number of seats being awarded to each party based on the percentage of the vote they got. Say there were 100 seats up for reelection, if the Republican party got 35 percent of the vote, they would get 35 seats and would refer back to their list of most popular candidates and give those seats to the top 35 on that list. The Democratic party got 25% and 25 seats and a third party got the remaining 30 percent and gets 30 seats. This would eliminate the two party tug of war and allow Congress to be a more diverse forum for all kinds of ideas.

    Good debate, very enlightening and revealing on both men's character. While I'm registered R to vote in primaries I haven't voted for an R president for the last 3 terms. I hate the current 2 party system... but Mike Lee has more integrity than McMullen...
    Lee shares exactly why he voted the way he did because he's obviously thought it through. He is clearly familiar with the constitution and refers to it on the spot. I'm confident he will hold to constitutional principles. If he was unaffiliated I would be even more likely to vote for him.
    McMullen on the other hand is using slight of hand and rhetoric to taint reality. He accused Lee wanting to deport dreamers when Lee had clearly stated his support of them. His ads are "anti-Lee" and a temptation of "power for Utah" but his actions say he'll do anything for power. Run as democrat to increase odds of winning - check. (Didnt work) Accept money from the "broken political system" to increase odds - Check. He's not standing on principles.
    If you stand for nothing you'll fall for everything. Lee stands for principles and he's willing to say NO to trump and biden... I like that... very rare in a politician :)

    I love how Evan concedes that the Senator voted No for the spending bills, but then says he doesn’t get credit because it didn’t work to stop the spending. Which if Evan was Senator and voted No would’ve had the same result. Basically, Evan seems to believe that if he does the same as the Senator but “reaches across the aisle” (implying that Lee doesn’t, without evidence) then he will be able to do more. Evan seems to want to become like Joe Manchin, a Senator with the power to hold the Senate hostage by selling a vote for the right pork or donations. No, I have no proof that he will do this but when he talks in such a non-commital way that’s what it seems to me.

    Voting for an independent is scary. This issue is highlighted here, when, after visiting Mcmullin’s website and watching this debate, I’m still not certain how he would vote in congress on many key policies that are important to me. His answers in this debate were vague, and his policies listed on his website are even less helpful in understanding what/who he truly supports. He also totally sidestepped the question on whether he thinks the government or corporations are responsible for the unrelenting inflation. Listed as an independent, unless Mcmullin explicitly states where he stands on every major issue, I have no idea how he will actually vote on those issues in Washington. As for Lee, I can at least say with some certainty that I know where he stands on many important policies due to his party alignment and his solid policy stance in this debate, therefore I have an idea of how he will vote in congress. That’s why it will be hard to ever leave a party system in America, because Independents like Mcmullin can be such wild cards in policy; and that is scary to voters.

      I looked for McMullin's position on it as well, and all I came up with is that he called on Mike Lee to back the "Safer Communities Act", which had some bad provisions (e.g. funding for red flag laws which encourages violating due process). Mike Lee opposed the "Safer Communities Act" because he would not trample on rights protected by the Constitution, and for that, I applaud him. Evan McMullin's calls to support it tell me what I need to know about his stance on the Second Amendment.
      As for Mike Lee, I've been very active in watching him. Pretty much every time I saw something concerning (proposed legislation or ATF's attempts to make criminals out of law-abiding citizens), he already had a message up on how he was working to fight against the government's infringement of our natural rights. I still emailed him, but it was a "Thank you for standing against this" instead of a "Please stand against this" (though I did have to send the latter to Romney so he knew the desires of his constituents). As far as all the 2A items I'd been tracking, Mike Lee never disappointed.
      Personally, I see the Second Amendment as the bulwark against the march of tyranny, so a candidate's position and record on this may possibly be my primary consideration in preserving a free state wherein all good can be openly pursued. If someone is for every lawful American keeping and bearing arms without infringement, it speaks a great deal to me of their regard for freedom and their disgust for tyranny. I wouldn't say those who allow infringements are actively FOR tyranny, but rather that their considerations are substantially short-sighted, by which they're being an unwitting boon to tyrants. I, too, mourn deeply for the loss of innocent life at the hands of criminals, and I want people to develop morality again so we can see these wicked crimes end. For the sake of freedom being maintained, we must not allow our natural rights to be infringed. History has shown us what tyrants do when the people are unable to oppose them - Mao, Stalin, Hitler. Without arms, tyrants impose their will and murder tens of millions more people than the sick, evil, and (generally) lone shooters do. Remember that every law has a loaded barrel at its end to enforce it, so if you stand without arms, you will find yourself subjected to every law the power-hungry can think up. Stay armed, stay free, and (most importantly) stay good to one another.

    McMullin wants to be independent and says he won't identify with either party, but if you know how senators are selected for committees, you really need to identify with a party. Elected officials of the same party vote on who will be on certain committees, after which the total senate (both parties) vote on the who will be on the committee. So...... identifying with a party is important on getting on a committee. Since democrats paid for much of McMullin's campaign, don't think they they will not very strongly encourage him to identify with them. Also - what if at election time, there are 50 Republican senators elected and 49 Democrats, and since McMullin doesn't identify with a party, then Republicans will be in the majority. Don't think Democrats will almost force him to identify with them so they have the majority.

      Having enough weapons to dissuade war is cheaper than fighting a war. Look at Ukraine. We could have stopped that for a fraction of the cost by upholding our promise to the Ukrainians to protect them in exchange for them denuclearizing them. Instead, we egged on Russia by raising oil prices, and promising NOT to defend Ukraine. Russia took the bait, and is being played. The military industrial complex makes trillions, the US spends billions, meanwhile the global logistics of fertilizer and electronics is put at risk.

      It's the transparent goal of the progressives to remove checks and balances in favor of an expert class of oligarchs. It's historically been announced through people like Wilson, Roosevelt, LBJ and the like. COVID made it undeniably transparent that Fauci has more powers then any of our elected officials. The Trump trials are showing us that the FBI has more power than the president.
      All these bureaucracies have been subverting our republic for a century now.
