Madness and Modernism: Discussing the Status of Artistry of Mentally Ill Between 1900 and 1930

There has been a heated debate about the inclusion of artistic works by people with mental health condition in the art world and the art market. Should we continue to use the terms Art Brut and Outsider Art for works by amateurs that differ greatly from current and traditional art languages? Are these terms, which once intended to positively discriminate, now just stigmatizing? Why don't we just talk about art in a uniform way? From this perspective, a new look at the beginning of the aesthetic interest in “art des fous” and “Irrenkunst” seems reasonable. What did pioneers like Paul Meunier (aka Marcel Rejá), Walter Morgenthaler, and Hans Prinzhorn see in these works? How did professional artists react to them at the modern period?
L'inclusion dans le monde de l'art et sur le marché de l'art des œuvres artistiques réalisées par des personnes souffrant de troubles mentaux a fait l'objet d'un débat animé. Faut-il continuer à utiliser les termes d' « art brut » et d' « art outsider » pour désigner des œuvres d'amateurs qui s'écartent fortement des langages artistiques actuels et traditionnels ? Ces termes, qui avaient autrefois pour but d'opérer une discrimination positive, sont-ils aujourd'hui simplement stigmatisants ? Pourquoi ne pas parler de l'art de manière uniforme ? Dans cette perspective, un nouveau regard sur les débuts de l'intérêt esthétique pour l'"art des fous" et l' « Irrenkunst » semble nécessaire. Qu'est-ce que des pionniers comme Paul Meunier (alias Marcel Réja), Walter Morgenthaler et Hans Prinzhorn ont vu dans ces œuvres ? Comment les artistes professionnels ont-ils réagi à l'époque moderne ?
