I made not close to $100K a year the last 20 years of my work career. I retired recently. Over 20 yrs ago I left NYC area and moved to a goyishe area I can afford. My wife left me in the 90's because we struggled just to pay rent. I lived cheap, shopped only at walmart for clothes food, everything. I stayed away from the kosher store unless I needed grape juice, shabbos candles or an occaisional Israeli treat like Bissli or crappy machine matzoh for pesach. I just didn't eat meat. Too expensive. My siblings had large families then had to shnoor to put food on the table. The pressure is unreal and ruining many many lives in the frum communities. My extreme frugal life allowed me to save and invest. Finally the last 5-6 years my portfolio value took a big leap, over 7 figures. It came too late in life. The system is wrong.
Honestly having dinner with god sounds pretty awesome!!! Being able to speak to my creator and the one who created everyone in my life that I love would be amazing.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe! I never got to go for dollars or yechidus, I didn't know about him until I became BT later on. But still, even though I've never met him, he has been such a pillar of strength for me with his incredible insight and teachings, and so much more.
Homes in Monsey today are just as expensive as they were 25 + years ago (adjusted for inflation). The problem in the frum community in many neighborhoods, is that it seems that 40 + % are making a ton of money and because of that, are suckers and will pay practically anything a house or property costs, up to and including paying crazy money for a house, no matter the condition, knocking it down and building a brand new one, and the hell with the other remaining large % that can't even afford a basic house because the prices are so jacked up BECAUSE OF THEM. Not to mention the full fledged simchas in your shul, that if you can't afford the same as the last few simchas, you are made to feel out of place. And yes, it's embarrassing. The pressure that kids put on parents regarding vacation, camp, birthday parties, bar/bas mitzvas, fashionable clothing, etc etc because of the ones that have plenty to spend. Those with all the money are screwing over the rest. Some achdus we have going i must say. And BTW, If you think that the OTD issues in our community don't have something to do with this, think again. It's a BIG turn off. Just because you have all the money, doesn't mean you need to spend it recklessly.
That's why many of the people who leave, leave. This whole meshugas really began in the 80's and hit warp speed the last 20 years. I didn't fret too much about it. I realized I couldn't keep up so I went about trying as best I know, to live a comfortable life, so I left. My cousins all look hollowed out, dragging themselves from one thing to another, every single one of them struggling, trying to help children & grandchildren. They should be taking at least a few trips with their spouses, enjoying life a little, relaxing. When they see me at a simcha, I almost feel like they're somewhat envious. I wish I could help them all.
Was a great broadcast with really no conclusions Its become a social norm that everyone has to live near each other But really we have to start working with cheaper neighborhoods and tuition credits from the state With everything else I really think we got it down Weddings especially in Lakewood have really been downgraded Food most people have cut out eating out It’s the rent and tuition
I am 32 female. I am from out of town. After seminary I moved to New York for Shidduchim. At 18 I worked and paid all my own expenses including rent, food, clothing, and plane tickets home to visit my parents. My parents would give me maybe $200 a year towards clothing for Shidduchim, but the rest was on me. When I got married a little later then most both sets of parents paid for the wedding. My parents paid for half of my clothing expenses. They also gave me one months rent and paid for our beds so we can get brand new beds. The rest of our furniture we found second hand. We also brought a second hand car. When I hear what parents today give to their married children I am shocked. I supported myself from 18, my parents payed for a basic Lechiam and wedding and part of the expanses of setting us up.My husband and I really took care of ourselves compared to the "typical" today. I worked to support my husband in Kollel for the first two years. It is not normal that young couples starting out are so financially reliant on their parents.
Wow this whole topic is literally my fave! And I always feel like it’s never spoken about enough! Truly such an amazing podcast and conversation!!!! And so mind opening!!!
Why is no one talking about endowments? Rather than immediately spending every dollar in tuition and donations, schools should be investing a portion of that money into endowments that over time will pay millions in interest/dividends every year.
Can’t wait to listen to this episode! One of my favorite topics. If I can sit down and have dinner with one person it would probably be Yosef. His story inspires me the most and I get emotional every time I hear it.
I would have dinner with Rebetzin Esther Jungreis. After reading her biography, and still in the middle of it, I feel regretful I never took the opportunity to hear her speak in person and maybe get the chance to meet and connect with her.
I would love to meet the Baal Shem Tov!! He’s my 6th great grandfather. We have a piece of his kittul that all my brothers and husband wore clipped on to their kittle under the chupah! I would love to meet Him ❤
I'd love to have dinner with Rebetzin Esther Jungreis Z'L. She's one of role models and it's a pity I didn't get to meet her. A truly inspiring Jewish trailblazer ❤
I totally agree with Mr Orzel. People who can not afford they have to change there way of thinkig how to spend money. You can't tell to a millionare cut down b/c of the poor once
Thank you for doing this episode there were so many important topics covered. Me and my husband both work in chinuch I’m a playgroup teacher and my husband teaches special ed in the morning and English teacher in the afternoons we do not get chasdei lev and are barely making it with getting tuition taken off of my husband’s paycheck. We are not people who keep up with the jonses. Some people really can’t afford tuition. Also I would love to sit down with Sara Shniror. My high school principal was a student of Rebbitzin Kaplan and spoke about Sara Shniror all the time
Would love to talk to rochel imainu. How?? How did u grow up with a father like lavan? How after finding the man of your dreams who would be the father of klal yisroel were you willing to give it all up for your sister? How did it feel to have only two kids while all the other wives had so many more? How does it feel to not be buried with the rest of the avos/imahos..? What would it take to make you cry so hard that Hashem won’t be able to say no one more time??
If you are encouraged to learn in Mir Brisk, or Bmg, how do they climb the ladder to $350,000.00. A year. I hate to listen to successful people. You are sooo out of touch! The 800.00 a week including shabbos. Check it out who is buying the grocery! Kids have to go to camp! Yeah. Find out how many don't. 2 cars...He is living a VERY luxury life!! This conversation doesn't make sense...why it's your babysitting for your small family , and you don't even know your kids!! How about tuition should be before everything. Where did your humble begining lead to!!! Chasidush schools ask less cause no one lives on such high level!! Very uneasy!! Interview others that live on this planet, not in the GVIR planet...
Hi, a Gita Vuch! Every Motzei Shabbos we have dinner with Dovid Hamelech himself. Now, to actually see him would be a real honor of epic proportions! How did he manage childhood, wars, kingdom, and still able to sing those psalms!?
Maybe get rid of the standard of crazy vacations and pesach programs before you hurt the parnasa of people living in Israel. It costs a ton of money to run a seminary/Yeshiva. Most survive on donations. Lots of students are on big scholarships. The cost of living here has gone up and the cost reflects that.
I’d love to have dinner with Yocheved. We share a name and she lived such an amazing life in a difficult time, and merited to have three of the most important children in Jewish history. She gives me such chizuk!
Hi! I would love to meet and have dinner with Rus. I find her to have been an inspirational and strong woman. (My sister is actually named after her) Thank you!
Fixing the world begins at home. Each one of us must take responsibility for our social pressures. It sounds unfair to expect Rabbonim to make rules for and monitor the general population's spending.
A rich guy can and should fly private but why does the entire community need to know about it if the rich can learn to enjoy their wealth quietly without the need of everyones approval then by all means do it
Can I add someone else? Esther Hamalka. Endured so much in her situation yet she had an unimaginable amount of Koach to stand up and save the Jewish Nation.
Thank you for bringing attention to this very serious issue. I’m curious about some of his numbers. Most people aren’t spending 12,000 - 15,000 on a sheitel and seminary doesn’t have to be 40,000 (and they do give scholarships to people who need) but I’m wondering if the numbers he sees are a bit inflated - I’m not saying people aren’t truthful on scholarship forms ch”v but there might be a tendency to round. Clothing can be cheaper too, car leases are often cheaper than buying a used car and having crazy repairs, etc.. in answer to the dinner question definitely Sara Imeinu.
I would luv to have supper with Rochel Imeinu. Learn how to be strong even when the influence around you is not the best. How to stay strong and true to yourself no matter what.
I would love to have dinner with Doeg HaDomi- I know its not a typical response but I did a project about him and I would love to know why he made the choices he choose, if he was such a big tzadik, where did he go wrong?
If you are not in the financial market space right now, you are making a huge mistake. I understand that it could be due to ignorance, but if you want to make your money work for you...prevent inflation
Maybe the schools should stop buying so much pizza and donuts.... Is all this extra expenditure necessary.... Go look at how schools run in the UK and Israel where the are publicly funded and so money needs to be accounted for and can't be wasted. A comparison needs to be done

G-D bless. You are correct my friend.
Your wife left you because you were a cheap ass. 100k in the 90's was more than enough not to live the kind of lifestyle you just described.
If a school judges a discount based on income, a school should have to make their books public!!!
Many schools do (at least to an extent), as they are required to as non-profits.
Honestly having dinner with god sounds pretty awesome!!! Being able to speak to my creator and the one who created everyone in my life that I love would be amazing.
This is the best podcast you’ve done

Tzipporah Moshe Rabbanu wife. She’s fascinating. Her father was Yisro and her husband was Moshe! What she went through what her life was like.

Florida yeshivas elementary schools charge $17,000 -$20,000 even though they get $8,500 per kid

Thank you. How do you get your children to have respect ? I was not the best but as a single mom I do my very best.

Sarah Schneirer -was a visionary and went against the norm in her times
Leah, her davening and tears were so powerful that she was able to go from marrying a big Rasha to a big tzaddik

Would love to sit with Esther hamalka since I am named after Her. She was an amazing example of a true queen 👸
Fact check:
Cleveland vouchers are income based!
If you make 200k you are not getting much off tuition maybe $950 a year
A rich guy can and should fly private but why does the entire community need to know about it if the rich can learn to enjoy their wealth quietly without the need of everyones approval then by all means do it
What a very inspiring guest
This is a tragedy! Sounds like unregulated capitalism has gone mad. Socialise education and tax the gvirim in the community to pay for it.
Gv so I would love having a dinner with each and everyone at the Sudas Leviosen sounds pretty awesome
I would love to meet Avraham Avinu and ask how he was able to stay strong to his convictions while the rest of the world was against him.
Can I add someone else? Esther Hamalka. Endured so much in her situation yet she had an unimaginable amount of Koach to stand up and save the Jewish Nation.

Feels like a big part of the american frum community is being priced out of living in the established frum communities…
I would luv to have supper with Rochel Imeinu. Learn how to be strong even when the influence around you is not the best. How to stay strong and true to yourself no matter what.
