This films true look will be lost in time. And what is his obsession with everything being heavy blue/teal looking?
I say this often but, whoever did the transfer for The Thing should be more involved with doing transfers, because that one was mind blowing.
FINALLY getting mine, all 3 this Thursday and I pre-ordered them very early...oh well, better late than never...I did however, see an advance of The Abyss and Aliens. Yes, the grain was finer, and although a stickler for true 4k scans of the original negative and a proponent of having the original audio included, I was quite happy.
To me, True Lies is the greatest action comedy of the 1990s
There has been conflicting reports to what happened with True Lies, some are saying the negative was damaged in a few sections and their only option was to over process the scene though if that is true than why not use an inter positive for the damaged scenes! The other rumor is they never went back to the camera negative and instead used a garbage master that has been sitting on the shelf for over a decade!
The reason they had to do the remaster as they did was the film stock was neglected and would've looked upscaled if all they did was remastered it naturally. Unfortunately that's something that happens for quite a few films. Hell the Peeping Tom 4K from StudioCanal restoration from the UK actually had to use several sources to not only clean the film up naturally but give proper color timing as some film stock had discoloration. I certainly hope Criterion uses this remaster as its beautiful.
I honestly didn't notice the moments you are talking about. I think we all are used to the soft grainy look of the DVD that seeing it remastered as it is and seeing more details was jarring.
All that about not doing new scans and a proper restoration is just not believable they could have used the Interpositive as they did with Point Break if that were remotely true. Also Peeping Tom is a massively controversial film from 1960, thats ancient and 34 years before True Lies....they are not comparable. "would've looked upscaled if all they did was remastered it naturally" absolutely not, point me to one 4k release where this has happened. It looks upscaled now........because it IS.
They had a limit to what they could use. The fact it was neglected is probably why the 2012 Blu-ray was cancelled since it would've cost money that FOX wouldn't have wanted to spen. Peeping Tom was a film that also had a lot to fix because of the neglect. True Lies is not young anymore and we only got 1 remastered DVD. That's a long time in a vault with no one doing anything to keep it taken care of.

If you know the process used and look a bit closer at the image then the whole thing falls apart. Every single pixel of True Lies on 4k is an AI's interpretation of that pixel of True Lies, it is no longer the same film.
But basically they used an AI algorithm to remove the grain from the film and then used the AI to "enhance" details, sharpen the image and add detail back that was removed. This results in an insanely unnatural image. The sharpness and details that you do see are just the results of AI literally creating details and artificially sharpening.
The use of this AI technology instead of doing proper restorations and 4k scans is very troubling. They did not do any rescans for this, this is an AI upscale of that previous HD transfer, which is why pixel for pixel they look the same only the 4k has the added fake sharpening to it and all grain removed (there is a fine layer of grain present on the 4k but this is again fake digital grain added after the fact).
There are many excuses running around the internet and "reasons" as to why these films didnt get new scans and proper restorations and that they "had" to just upscale them, but we all know that is just nonsense. This isnt some obscure film from the 40s. These films are some of the biggest titles to ever hit the format and some of the biggest films ever. And they are from the late 80s and 90s lol. Even if we are to believe that the Original Camera Negative was somehow in bad shape (unbelievable frankly), then I am sure that the Interpositive was around and could have been scanned, we have seen Vinegar Syndrome do this a billion times and it look great, Point Break from Shout also scanned from the Interpositive and that release looks a million times better than these Cameron 4ks. Like we live in a world where Burial Ground and Cannibal Holocaust of all films can have proper work put into then, proper rescans and restorations, and resulting in real Native 4k discs that look great and without a doubt the best that those films can look, and it is just inexcusable when we can have those titles looking like that and then the three biggest films to hit the format in years get releases like this, we just should accept this, we have standards. It really puts this in perspective when you think about all those titles that come out of Vinegar Syndrome and Arrow on 4k and how great they looked, could you imagine if they had been able to handle these restorations and releases. Also if Arrow or any other Boutique label had tried this AI upscaling instead of an actual scan of the film and remaster then that release would flop and everyone would be avoiding that like the plague and it would probably be laughed off of the planet. These are only being accepted and only doing well because of how sought after these have been after these many years.
Hopefully Boutique labels are smart enough to know that their customers arent like the general public and general consumers, we dont like picture to be messed with like this and we respect real scans and restorations, and we wont buy bad transfers or poor releases. If they dont realise this and realise that it is cheaper to AI Upscale old transfers like Cameron and his team did then they will go out of business and the niche markets will fall. Again dont think they are stupid enough to try and move to AI upscaling because hopefully they know their audience and customers, but it is a worry about how tempting it must sound and be "oh look the Cameron films have done so well and minimal complaints and it costs like 5% of the price of the proper restorations we do, lets just AI Upscale the DVD master like they did with True Lies and make more money." Could happen and isnt out of the realm of possibility and is a real worry for the future of 4k releases, especially 20th Century Studios back catalog releases where there have been rumours of using this process instead of rescans.....and Imma just say right now that if after years of waiting for my favourite film of all time to get a 4k....if I end up with an AI Upscaled 4k UHD Blu-ray release for The Fly (1986) then I will be the angriest person alive 😂😭

I agree with your thoughts on Tom Arnold in regards to True Lies,Im going to need The Terminator to be a 10 out of 10 when the 4k drops

Always loved this movie and couldn't wait for a blu ray release but not really a fan of the front cover hopefully a steel book with new artwork is in the future.
These releases looked fantastic imo. And i love film grain, The Abyss could be a contender for 4K of the year. Fantastic releases, way overblown

When I watched twin flicks yesterday when he compared the dvd and the 4k the skin looks the same. The 4k is just better. I’d say 7 is as high as I’ll give but abyss and alien look great imo. Aliens looks much better than the blu ray
Haven't seen this but Aliens is just incredible. Looks like it was made last year. All these "cinephiles" complaining about the lack of grain and enhanced AI detail should be able to get a different 4k transfer just for them. Then it would be like how people buy vinyl records instead of CDs. I saw Aliens in the theater as well True Lies and The Abyss. Watched them over the decades and I applaud James Cameron for how he released these. I hope he makes transfers of my baby movies without grain and enhanced AI detail.😂

That horse scene is one of the best James Cameron and Arnold and film history first Time I saw it I watched it with my dad and he grew up with horses when he went to jump that roof i sat up and was like no way and my dad goes theres no way that horse would do that and when he stopped we all died laughing

I won't lose sleep over it since it's not even Arnold's top films of the 90s. I skipped on this 4 but bought the other two. I went to the theatre opening weekend on Saturday and I fell asleep and my wife wike me up to see the causeway heading to Key Largo all the way to Key west since I lived in Palm Harbor of alt 19 down the road from Dunedin and Clearwater Beach from 1990 to 2017 and my fanilt all still lives there... I lived Tom Arnold in the film and was hilarious, but I was more excited about the causeway scenes......to each their own and I love Eraser better and needs a 4k....I hope everyone whi loves this movie, enjoys this 4k being better then the dvd.....

Love True lies. I prefer Total recall, but True lies is awesome. In terms of F**KING WITH the movie, leave it alone! With new releases of foreign films, they are definitely gonna ruin those movies with AI lip syncing. More and more releases are gonna be getting rid of "film grain". Depressing.

Again, not to bash True lies because I still love the movie, but I also would prefer Kindergarten cop over True lies as well. True lies would be 3rd basically on the list of 90's Arnold movies. Wait....Terminator 2: Judgement day.

Honestly I am the same. I love it. The movie looks great. Yes it is not perfect and I aknowlege everything with the skin. But as you said its so great to have this so good looking. The major drag on it is ALIENS is beyond gorgeous. Aliens is my favorite movie of all time and they really, really brought it there. In my newly 4k obsession it's one of the best looking I have. I cannot wait to hear what you think of how Aliens looks. Whatever after never having a bluray I love my 4k Lies.
An insider working on the restoration has spoken about how the film is shot very unevenly primarily due to James Cameron being forced to use a lens he strongly disliked. On top of that, the negative was in such poor condition due to mismanagement by the studio that it was very difficult to salvage many of the scenes. The results are a compromise, but as good as they could make it look.
How? The negative must be in worse shape than the 1911 film negative for Dante’s inferno because that 4K was was way better than this 😂

@@TotalMeltdown2 It makes perfect sense. James Cameron is an extreme perfectionist. AI enhancement and DNR or not, there is no way he would accept soft shots if he could get a better scan from the negative. Therefore, it is obviously not possible. It's simple logic.
I disagree, this is the worst JC movie in his filmography, nothing else is event close. The quality of the 4k is better than people are saying.
