Just a thought. I store all my tools, duct tape and tyre repair equipment in a tool tube I made out of pvc pipe and a waterproof screw cap. I also store disposable gloves cleaning wipes and a magnetic light as well as zip ties etc and malleable metal in case you hole a side case. I’ve zip tied it to my bike on the right side near the pannier. I painted it black to blend in and it doesn’t interfere with anything. I also have large hose clamps around the outside of the tube in case you I need them for exhaust repair etc The magnetic light is handy for fixing things in the dark and camping. I carry spare batteries in the tool tube as well. I’ve dropped my bike a couple of times in river crossings and ridden in torrential rain. Nothing inside has ever gotten wet. Just an idea you may want to consider. It saves space in your panniers and doesn’t get things dirty.
You are a motorcycle travel guru. I love how thrifty you are with gear. With your experience, you've whittled away the unnecessary. Those of us who travel sparingly are frequently guilty of continuing to carry stuff we don't need but don't feel good about leaving behind, aka kitchen sink syndrome. For example, multiple pairs of shoes...even ones that pack tight. Or multiple pairs of jeans. Even if you are traveling with a crowd of other riders, they really don't care about your fashion sense on the road, and won't care that you've been wearing the same jeans to dinner for 3 nights in a row. I'm a former backpacker so I like to think I'm pretty thrifty on packing, but since I'm not carrying it on my back, I have become a bit of a slacker for just throwing stuff in, but I continue to work on it.

I've been motorcycle camping since 1978. I would deem chair, pillow and flip flops unnecessary. I would also bring less clothes, but I understand the family visit situation.
Hey Tim, make sure you take a photo of your passport/info... and EMAIL it to yourself and a loved one so in case of loss/theft you have that info/#s etc. It happened to me in another country and I simply FWD the email to authorities back home and where I was and made it WAAAAAY way easier and faster. Do same with Driver License. I have BOTH of my together in the emails.
It looks as though you are getting a bit more relaxed after the stressful problems of a few months ago. Bike issues stress everyone out, hang in there.
Excellent job of a sensible kit. Best advice I ever received: “Take twice the money and half the stuff.” I’ve tried going with a hammock instead a tent, but the hammock minuses outweighed the positives, so I’m back to a two-person tent. Half the tent is for me and my cot and sleeping bag and the other half is for all my mc gear (helmet, jacket, pants, boots, neck gaiter, etc.) One suggestion: Add a tourniquet to your medical kit. There are several made for self-application and ratcheting.
Very good to establish what baseline gear to bring. For me, figuring out what gets packed where is a similar challenge. Seems like I get it about 90% figured out and then the remaining 10% remains fluid. Great fun!
Nice amd VERY thorough walk through. Always cool to see how (other) folks organize their gear. Your back seat bag is similar to how I used mine, everything that goes inside the tent in a waterproof bag so it's "never" exposed to the weather.

Nice kit! I always struggle with overpacking syndrome, so it's helpful to see that others can survive just fine on far less. I used to travel for my job and work outside in all conditions, so I could always justify taking that one additional thing to be prepared. Hard habit to break, but videos like yours help! Thanks!
Hey there Tim, hey I always appreciate your input on your travels, me and my buddy just got back from a three week trip that we’ve been planning for about three years, we took our bikes from Alabama all the way to Newfoundland and had one hell of a trip, but the few days we spent there were just not at all enough and required much more time. But anyway do love watching your travels and your equipment assessment, maybe one little thing I usually carry extra would be my dirty laundry bag, and yes I’m very particular about certain products that benefits me and exploring each side of the product, we’ve been touring for over 11 years now and each trip can be construed as a learning experience, while writing this there is one more thing, we camp everywhere we go, so when it comes to camping there is one vital additional item I added to my list about three years back and now a must when camping, occasionally if there should be warm nights the little 10.00 dollar Martha Stewart fan with usb plug in about 4” square and pivots and three speed is an absolute must, it is suspended with three tiny bungee straps which I hang from my loops right above my chest and head, not dare to leave home with out it, bought at Walmart, anyway just little extra tip on our essential list. If things go well, I may extend a couple days to see the Snake River and Wallowa area.

Good review Tim, just picked up some BC35’s so seeing how you pack was very helpful. I have alot of the same stuff except my moto tent is a little larger, but hope it fits on top of one of the BC’s. Thanks for the ideas for packing help.

Really good and informative !!!! I pack about the same with the addition of a few 55 gallon drum liner trash bags. They make for good bean bag style chairs and also a mattress. They weigh almost nothing.
At the end of a multi day trip I make two piles on the shed floor; things I used and things I did not. Next trip you have to decide whether the did not use items are needed. The further from civilisation you venture, the more fuel and water/ food/ cooking gear you need to pack. I tend to take less clothing to compensate for the extra. If I stink, only I will know!
I like to toss the rain jacket / pants at the top of the left rear pannier. You never know when its going to start raining, and you want it up near the top so you can get to it quickly. Was riding in Colorado around Leadville last year and needed the rain gear. Had it on the left side near the top so it was easy to get the rain jacket and pants.,
Long time subscriber but I relate even more now that your riding the KLR. I have a Zin Bivy also and really like it. The fact things didn’t fall to the ground as you placed them was entertaining too!

I have the same model of KLR and if you want to add usb charger/12v socket, fog lights or heated grips there are 3 powder connectors under the front fairings you can use. There is one set of bullet connectors I used for a usb charger and I replaced one of the other factory connectors with a deutsch connector so I could power my heated grips.
I don’t know why, (since I still have a bmw gsa), but I love that you went to the KLR. Much easier to get parts, practical and comfortable enough. I like BMWs fine, but I’m not attached to the brand. I don’t care much for the dealers or the direction BMW products are going.
Great video! I could recommend the Mophie powerbank, its smaller and was able to start my car 5 times with one charge and also includes an inbuilt air compressor :-)
About the same I carry :) I don’t do videos but bring my laptop for work now and then. When I do I use a rucksack. One thing that I rarely see travelers talking about is to always bring empty space.. You need groceries, you pick up souvenirs etc etc. I usually carry a smaller almost empty bag at the back of the bike for all that. Water tends to be bulky and heavy as well. Usually carrying between 2-3 liters. How do you do that? I have 1L in one of the bags and the rest usually strapped in a baggage net covering my bags :) Great video as always! Cheers from 🇸🇪

Thanks for sharing your gear and thoughts. We have similar setups. I prefer not to cook while traveling but I understand why you would. Trail bars and water do well for me. The little chairs like that are surprisingly comfortable. Having tubes in your tires is a big disadvantage IMO. Can you get tubeless rims for that bike?
Did you work out weigh distribution in panniers since perhaps the mufflerside is offset more and to balance weight, due to fulcrum effect, the side more offset should carry less weight.

My Buddy has one of those, also loves his. He's a long distance rider quite often, and mounted a massive 6gal aux tank on the back. It looks like it has a mini helipad, but he can skip quite a few fuel stops, lol.
Great list of equipment brother, also highly recommend the Rev It rain suit that comes in a condensed drawstring bag that I've been really impressed with living out here in the Pacific NW rain. Also recommend a tinder/flint fire starter & chem lights for emergencies. Do you have pay monthly for the portable GPS service to send texts and stuff? I know many that I've looked at charge you a monthly fee for it. Keep up the great content! 🤘
How has the adjustment from the GS to the KLR going ? I did the opposite I went from the KLR with hard bags to a Triumph 900 Rally pro with the mosco soft bags. I got to tell ya I'm really loving this bike I know theirs a weight difference but I just returned from the Rockies going over most of the passes with not much more difficulty. It has all the bells and whistles that any adventurer would love. Anyway love your channel be safe.
Hmmm… I’d have to think about that. I’ve carried some tools that never got used, that’s probably the big one. Great question! Certain things I’m glad to not need like a first aid kit and rain gear.
Love me some gear videos 😁 Just goes to show you really don't need that much for multi-week trips. My mistake was always over packing. Too many clothes and camp food took up too much space. Unnecessary.
Nice video. I just did a 2+k mile trip and then recently a cross country 8k mile trip on my V-strom. Road, trail (black bear pass) etc. I had a tent but decided not to camp since was riding 9-10 hours a day. I needed to shower, was breaking out in hives from the sweat... I keep looking at videos like this. I am frugal or rather not wasteful but I need gear. Good to know what your solutions are. I feel like I'm 80% complete.

My kit is pretty similar to yours minus the laptop/camera gear and it still weighs 60 lbs counting the panniers, top duffle, 1 gallon fuel rotopax and water. Though my Africa Twin handles it well, it still seems a lot so I was wondering if yours is in the same ballpark.
Tim, no issues with the Nemo Fillo? I bought one a year ago. Super comfortable and exactly the right size for me, but after the first use it has been slowly leaking. I have to reinflate sometimes 3-4 times a night. I'm a restless sleeper and wake up a lot anyway, but I was surprised that such an expensive product failed so quickly.
I'd like to carry my MacBook Pro with me on extended trips. My concern is that the road isn't our friou end when it comes to taking this with us. Curious to know how this hard case works out for you, protecting your MacBook Pro. Thanks!

I tried the hammock thing too but switched back to tents. Thanks I’ll look at some tourniquets.

I drilled through the bottom and used stainless bolts and locking nuts. With fender washers.

I went with the dirt racks, haven’t installed them yet. They’re waiting for me in Phoenix.
Where are your zip ties? I cary lots of the when i am hiking/bike traveling.. Saved me many times during my snowboard backcountry freeride trips..

Think the shaft drive Moto Guzi 850 TT would be advantaged. No chain to clean or adjust. Bad thing would be dealerships few & far between.

My Buddy has one of those, also loves his. He's a long distance rider quite often, and mounted a massive 6gal aux tank on the back. It looks like it has a mini helipad, but he can skip quite a few fuel stops, lol.
Great list of equipment brother, also highly recommend the Rev It rain suit that comes in a condensed drawstring bag that I've been really impressed with living out here in the Pacific NW rain. Also recommend a tinder/flint fire starter & chem lights for emergencies. Do you have pay monthly for the portable GPS service to send texts and stuff? I know many that I've looked at charge you a monthly fee for it. Keep up the great content! 🤘
How has the adjustment from the GS to the KLR going ? I did the opposite I went from the KLR with hard bags to a Triumph 900 Rally pro with the mosco soft bags. I got to tell ya I'm really loving this bike I know theirs a weight difference but I just returned from the Rockies going over most of the passes with not much more difficulty. It has all the bells and whistles that any adventurer would love. Anyway love your channel be safe.

Hmmm… I’d have to think about that. I’ve carried some tools that never got used, that’s probably the big one. Great question! Certain things I’m glad to not need like a first aid kit and rain gear.

A little of both. Also I’ll go to a dollar general once in a while and pick up something easy to make.

Just goes to show you really don't need that much for multi-week trips.
My mistake was always over packing. Too many clothes and camp food took up too much space. Unnecessary.
Nice video. I just did a 2+k mile trip and then recently a cross country 8k mile trip on my V-strom. Road, trail (black bear pass) etc. I had a tent but decided not to camp since was riding 9-10 hours a day. I needed to shower, was breaking out in hives from the sweat... I keep looking at videos like this. I am frugal or rather not wasteful but I need gear. Good to know what your solutions are. I feel like I'm 80% complete.

Another great vid Tim. Curious if you know how much your kit weighs? My kit is pretty similar to yours minus the laptop/camera gear and it still weighs 60 lbs counting the panniers, top duffle, 1 gallon fuel rotopax and water. Though my Africa Twin handles it well, it still seems a lot so I was wondering if yours is in the same ballpark.

Tim, no issues with the Nemo Fillo? I bought one a year ago. Super comfortable and exactly the right size for me, but after the first use it has been slowly leaking. I have to reinflate sometimes 3-4 times a night. I'm a restless sleeper and wake up a lot anyway, but I was surprised that such an expensive product failed so quickly.
I'd like to carry my MacBook Pro with me on extended trips. My concern is that the road isn't our friou end when it comes to taking this with us. Curious to know how this hard case works out for you, protecting your MacBook Pro. Thanks!

How many hours do you travel in a day? I’m hoping to take some trips next year . Just got the bike so I need to gear it up for travel this year
