  • A quick visit to the historic town of Rochester, on the banks for the River Medway in Kent
    From the High Street, that follows the Roman road from London to Dover, known as Watling Street. Also known to Charles Dickens, who featured many of the building in his stories. We take in the Guildhall Museum, discover the College Gate before heading onto Rochester's Visitor's Centre & Art Gallery (including the Huguenot Museum) before strolling onto Eastgate House.
    Our tour now takes us up Crow Lane towards the Vines, past Restoration House. A quick stroll through the Vines park before detouring around towards The Precinct before heading onto Rochester Cathedral. The cathedral dates from AD604, which makes Rochester Castle, and it's Keep, pretty modern at 1127.
    A quick stroll around the grounds of Rochester Castle, taking in the Crimean Cannon before our final destination of The Esplanade

      Hi Yvonne,
      Thank you so much; I am really glad you enjoyed it and it brought back fond memories.
      Where do you find yourself these days? and are there other places you remember from your childhood? The reason I ask is can provide inspiration for other places to visit.
      It's strange that the places you think you know so well, you may not. It is like this video, and the one of Maidstone, 5 & 4 miles away respectively, that are on your doorstep, back can overlook. We love having a peek through an outsider's eyes,
      Anyway,
      All the best,
      Gary & Janis

      @@OurWorldForYou I remember visiting Aylesford Priory many times and taking the boat from the Malta Inn, Arlington Castle and lochs. Sissinghurt Gardens.
      Worked in Maidstone so I'll have to check that one out. SO many great memories. Left England in 1980 for Greenwich CT, USA, now living in Sarasota Florida but I'll be back next year for the summer. Can't wait!!! Thank you again.

      Yvonne,
      How fabulous - Greenwich, CT looks lovely, always amusing to look at a map of old America for place names you recognise. It also made me remember we haven't done a video on Greenwich, London. We were going to just before the pandemic, but it slipped through the net.
      We must have passed Sarasota back in 1996, We flew into Orlando for a week of Disney & stuff, before heading to Clearwater, onto the Everglades and finally, the Keys- fond memories, although such a long time ago.
      Back to you, well, we have Aylesford Priory - ruclips.net/video/nlyj37C1bYs/видео.html
      And Sissinghurst Castle, well, we have two;

      There may be some other places you remember; check out our Touring England playlist ruclips.net/p/PLwaSkfP77ubZyMm3EmpHbNHS_FTZ3VJw-
      Hopefully, we'll have a proper English Summer next year; let's keep them 🤞

    Thank you, for offering a large amount of information into a relatively short video. As a medieval historian, I have spent quite a bit of time over the years in Rochester, and urge would be visitors to allow plenty of hours to take in all that old Rochester has to offer. The Normans frequently built both castle and cathedral close to each other - great for subsequent tourists.
    The castle has played a vital and important role in English history, so should not be missed. However, I am so glad you mentioned ' Baggins Book Shop ' as being a book fiend I lost myself amongst their bookshelves for many hours at a time :)
    Very well produced and filmed - well done indeed :)

      @@OurWorldForYou Oh, you are most welcome ! When in Rochester, I stayed at a place in the rather enticingly named ' Love Lane ' not far above the Cathedral and Castle - a nice view over the River Medway, then just a short walk - wonderful :)

      That's interesting - A little bit of modern history here, but did you know that Short Brothers had a factory in Rochester. From your accommodation, you would have been able to see seaplanes on the Medway in the years up to 1948? Here's a clip I found of them ruclips.net/video/9LfwPj6QQCM/видео.html

    • @MrTorleon
      @MrTorleon 3 года назад +1

      @@OurWorldForYou Indeed I knew a little bit about the ' Short ' airplane manufacturer. During WW2 they built a four engine bomber, the Stirling, not as good as the more famous Lancaster, and had, due to various needs , very high and long landing gear - giving pilots visual difficulties during landing. Its Sunderland flying boats on the other hand were enormously successful in every way, both during the war and after :)
      All fascinating and important local history, you will agree I`m sure !

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  3 года назад

      I had to look up the Stirling, as you rightly say, overlooked by the Lancaster. A little like the Hurricane lives in the shadow of the Spitfire. Those seaplanes & flying boats were something else, marvellous creations.

    I took my daughter Aubrey to Rochester on Saturday 29th of October and toured around Rochester castle and then into the high street before going to watch Chatham town fc take on Hythe Town at the Bauvil stadium ,the home of Chatham town football club in which I am a season ticket holder.Altogether that was wonderful seeing Rochester castle cathedral and high street and Chatham town fc beat Hythe town 6-1.
    In February we are going down to Hythe for the return match.just like Rochester full of history ,Hythe is also got plenty of history in which I did comment on your Hythe vidio.

      I currently live in Charleston, South Carolina, US. We hired an family tree tracer and she found records going back to a William Rochester in Kent. He later moved to America (Virginia, specifically) with his brother where he founded Rochester, New York. Later, we had family slowly migrate further south to South Carolina. It’s a fascinating thing! We have connected with many family members. Our family tree tracer collected various records and documents into a booklet for our reference. Interestingly, the oldest record she found was an inheritance document that William Rochester’s father created which outlined who would receive his various belongings which included anything from silver spoons to robes. She said it is rare to find wills from that far back, so naturally, we were quite excited!
      Again, thanks for taking your time to connect with me and for making a great video of Rochester. Perhaps, we’ll run into each other one day!

    • @OurWorldForYou
      @OurWorldForYou  2 года назад

      Laura,
      Wow, that's so amazing. I have briefly been to Charleston, on a connecting flight from Rayleigh, NC in my corporate days. Also had a colleague for Rochester NY from the same period.
      The problem with tracing ancestors is you end up with a million questions, and when & why, so many stories. Where did they depart the UK? Could it have been Sandwich in the UK? You might want to check out that video too? On the quayside, there is an information board that details that in the 17th century Sandwich was a major port for settlers to the American colonies, with grants being paid for people to settle in Virginia.
      Anyway, best of luck tracing that family tree, where will it lead you next?
      We'll shout if we're in Charleston again, and make sure you let us know if you make it to Rochester.
      Take care and happy travels,
      Gary & Janis

      Thanks so much!
      I’m not sure where they departed, but I will definitely connect with our family tree tracer and see if we can find some information. That’s amazing, thank you so much for that detail. Perhaps we can find some records connected with the Rochesters. It’s been a pleasure connecting with you. Thank you for all the historical and cultural knowledge you share.
      Right now, my family and I are looking for historical records from my mother’s side. So far, we’ve traced it back to two brothers arriving in Charleston from Scotland. Hopefully there will be more to come.
      Definitely let me know if you all are ever in Charleston. And hopefully, sooner rather than later, I’ll be visiting Rochester.
      Cheers,
      Laura

      Yep, this was filmed on the little DJI Osmo Pocket. I think the best footage is from our 'A Morning Safari Drive in Zimbabwe' at 3:55 (ruclips.net/video/cH9UBm3xBPM/видео.html) - super stable footage from the DJI Osmo pocket. It's interesting that you mention the DJI Osmo pocket as it looks like a new one is going to be launched tomorrow - a bit excited, and depending on the spec' it'll make it onto the wish list.
