    So I just pulled my 1st Elephant garlic harvest. You explained that the corns take 2 years to produce, but when do you plant them? So I am guessing they don't clove until the 2nd year? I bought cloves and planted in November like you did.
    Thank you for taking the time to respond.

    • @growingoutthebox
      @growingoutthebox  6 месяцев назад +2

      Yes. I plant the corms at the same time in November. Get you a nut cracker and remove them from the shell. They will form what’s called a round. Looks like a leek with an onion bulb. The following year plant it like a clove and there will be your largest bulbs. That’s how my bulbs are so large. The rounds make the largest bulbs. Compost, bone meal, worm castings and just sprinkle Muriate of Potash over the bed and mulch.

    • @stacylandis9806
      @stacylandis9806 6 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for your answer! I only pulled 2 elephant garlic so far. They both had corms, but looked like a leek with an onion at the bottom like you said. I originally planted cloves last November and we have feet of snow/below freezing in winter. I know it takes 2 years, so is that from corms, or cloves, or both? The greens are browning significantly so I thought they were ready to harvest. I guess I need to let them go another year to get cloves?

  • @marktoldgardengnome4110

    That's some beautiful Garlic my friend. Are you still working forward to a larger scale
    production for resale? And will it be mostly grown from cloves (the quickest way)
    rather than corms, then rounds? (2yr process) Just curious.
    Mother Nature never ceases to amaze me. The fact that the upside down one, still
    found the Sun, buried in the dark ground, no ability to see, has to be from feeling for
    warmth. That's easy to deduce, but why did the roots grow in the same way, where
    normally they would grow downward seeking nutrients and water?
    Our Garlic, all hard necks, are in their final stage. Last fertilized and hand watered.
    I say hand watered because it's been 13 days without watering. Bottom leaves yellowing.
    2"s of rain yesterday and only 2 sunny days forecast in the next week. Nothing I can
    do about that. We'll test pull a couple on July 1st, hopefully shooting for a July 7th-10th.
    As always, TYFS Keith
    Oh, were your last couple feedings nitrogen or phosphorous based?

      @growingoutthebox you know when the garlic grow so tall. I looked at a video, and the lady called them scapes but I let grow until the round ball on them like they getting ready to flower, so ran out out side and cut them off. The lady said that will stunt the bulb growth
      I just hope I did not wait too late. I did finish off the sweet potatoes and white potatoes like you said. I used the green sand and bone meal on the sweet potatoes. I drew small lines in the barrel and worked in the bone meal, and I added the green sand. I used the kelp meal on th butter ball and russet potatoes.

    Man...I planted my garlic under my grapevine than all of a sudden they just started to fall over. Think it was to much shade they are still alive but i guess ill move them this fall into direct light for next year. Will they continue to grow or just go to seed?

    • @growingoutthebox

      They need that direct sunlight to get the bulbs larger. It’s too late to make a real difference this harvest but Fall will be rolling around the corner and you will be ready.
