Why I use the striker

  • Most ferro rods (fire steels) come with a striker and for a reason.
Is using the spine of your knife all the time not messing with the heat threat and temper of the blade?

I'm not the scientist at all but I would think the small amount of molten metal on the spine is not enough to effect the heat treat. It does mess it up cosmetically though and I don't do it much.

+cyclist01222. I never did hear of it being a problem but it was also never investigated. Maybe there is some person that knows a lot about metals that can help solve this question.
Indeed it's cosmetic also and I do not like these marks on my blade. So I test a knife if the knife can throw sparks and than go back to using the striker.

I like that neck knife and sheath

Thanks. It's a cheap but functional one. It had a trailing point and a cheap plastic sheath so I changed it into a drop point and made a thick leather sheath. I still use it a lot in and around the house for small tasks like opening packages, cutting small stuff, etc. I find this tip down neck carry more convenient than a folding knife.

Brother you and I think alike! I hate using the back of my knife too. If your gonna tote a ferro rod then why not carry a good striker?
