I'd argue that you shouldn't have qualms relying on piracy to get a hold of games unavailable for purchase anymore. Buying it off of eBay makes no technical difference to Codemasters, as they'll never see a penny you spent on the game anyway. This is about game preservation, and as long as publishers will suck at this, piracy will be necessary and needed.

So really, for all budget gamers out there; If you can get yourself a cracked copy from a torrent site, do it! I personally don't condemn pirates from preserving our video game history. And if there's no legal way to buy them from the publisher. Well, that's a loss on them and not the fault of the consumer. I have Outrun2006, Dirt2 and Dirt3 in my Steam archive. It seems at that era games reached "good enough" state graphically where even nowadays you would be totally fine playing through them and not massively notice the difference in gaming experience as in playing PS1 or PS2 games where added detail would be clearly more immersive. Kinda unique time for video games we have now.

    • @michaelmonstar4276
      @michaelmonstar4276 3 года назад +21

Kinda depends what games, though. - Racing-games have always been able to be ahead of the curve (pun intended) because they needed to render less in the world. Basically just an environment that is only seen directly from the track (and occasionally off-track), besides the fact that you speed by things anyway so you wouldn't have time to really look at things in detail, especially since you need to keep your eyes on the road and competition. - Obviously games would expand beyond the kind of "cardboard scenes" you'd see in the '90s and early 2000s, with more and more open environments and landscapes, plus more animated crowds and other elements. But it still needs way less than your RPGs and the like.
That's why they could increase the quality on things, as not a whole lot needs to be rendered at the same time. It's a controlled environment, it's kind of predictable (not a random open world or sandbox), so they could optimize it for that. - And clearly Codemasters went all-out generation after generation, improving their EGO Engine and whatnot, so we ended up getting these games that last since pretty much DiRT 2 (the one title before, Racedrive GRID, is still OK but clearly lacks the fidelity).
And I also feel there is this cut-off around the year 2008 where games are between "slightly too old" (for today anyway) or "just hold up". Take 'Crysis', for example, which was mindblowing at the time, but didn't hold up enough with CryEngine 2, so it got a remaster to polish things up more recently. It was just slightly expired being developed in like 2006/2007. Most higher-quality games after that point indeed tend to hold up. - It's also that overlap in console-generations, where a few years later it moved from 7th to 8th gen. and even the best-looking PS3 and X360 games (such as Crysis and DiRT 2) still hold up, though some got remasters like say the Uncharted trilogy, which were just too much to ask from something like a PS3. - But it's cool that we've gotten to this point. :) We're so spoiled! XD

Seems so. I had a few PC games from this era but I didn't have the hardware then. Modern Warfare 2, World at War, DiRT 2, NFS Shift and maybe some other. I reinstalled some of them when I got a hardware that's relatively overkill for games of the time and I gotta say, graphically, they mostly aged well.
Mostly. I'm glad we have walked away from low-saturation brown filters and obnoxious lens flares nowadays.

Probably the most advanced early DX11 game was Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason, a very strange FPS out of Russia. Rather than being a DX9 game with a few added effects it was built for the API from the ground up. If I remember correctly it came out some months before Dirt 2. It's worth having a look at, also worth playing if you're into really weird obscure horror games.

Before adding the dirt name in 2007 and dropping Colin McRae in 2011. Games with licensed music alway get delisted and no longer available for purchase when licences expire. Although if you already own the game before it was removed, you can still play it. DiRT 3 Complete Edition was given away for free in November 2016 just before it got delisted. I remember I was blown away by the quality of the water there. It really looks gorgeous still to this day, and I miss it so much in modern DiRT games. I speak not just about your ordinary small puddles and stuff, but real bodies of water on track ranging in size from medium to 'huge'. If only those splendid dust clouds would also cast and receive dynamic shadows then it would be truly a God-tier stunning tech, for sure.
Tech goodies aside, it was a blast of a game, combining excellent gameplay, sick soundtrack, and also quite engaging progression. The main menu navigation still gets me, it was so much more than just a UI with buttons and submenus sprinkled around, it was a living breathing part of the game's world seamlessly integrated into the narrative, and damn it was so cozy inside!

I'd honestly say a little older than that. I know this game really well so I also know its flaws. - It's particularly details like lower-resolution textures that give things away, because back then you really had to mind the memory a lot more, mostly because of consoles, but also most PCs at the time. - So I'd guess... Between 2011 and 2015 or something. But that still says a lot about the quality of it. Honestly it was stuck in my head that this game was from 2011, so I was surprised it was 2009 when I played it again some months ago. - I'm just like "How?!". - And it's just one of those examples in which they used a good amount of trickery to balance visuals and resources with optimization.

I'm fortunate enough to have nabbed this game on Steam when it was still available and I still play it from time to time. Heck, I'd argue I kinda prefer this one over the newer Dirt Rally games, I just love the obnoxious corporate explosion of "extreme" advertisements paired with the "on the road" festival atmosphere, it just feels more homely and personal instead of a generic car workshop, it's an atmosphere that feels realistic and looks like a place where I'd actually enjoy to hang out in real life.
Also the graphics have aged beautifully, even with the performance hit of dx11, it runs and looks FANTASTIC. It's a damn shame it's no longer available in stores and this is one of those cases where I have ZERO qualms about pirating a game, absolutely go for it!

I still have Dirt 2 working. Had to apply a noCD fix and something that basically tells GFWL not to bother trying, but it works. Which is a great relief, because it remains a fantastic game with visuals that really hold up well.
The one big mistake the game made however - no splitscreen on PC. It would be the perfect splitscreen racer... but the feature is just painfully absent for no good reason.
Incidentally, the licensing issues almost certainly revolve around the music - the music is baked into the loading screens, with a music video for at least one of the songs playing occasionally on the TV in the menu/RV, so replacing or removing it would have required a fairly major patch.

This was the first racing game I played where I actually used a gaming wheel (On PC of course, I'm not a console gamer). I had the RGT Force Feed Back Pro with clutch by Thrustmaster and I think that is one of the reasons I loved this game so much.

When DiRT 5 was announced I was super hyped because the look of it reminded me so much of DiRT 2...I was thoroughly disappointed when it was released. I mean they launched it with little or no wheel support, really? Then it played WAY too much like an arcade, 'Just turn the wheel and the car will go around a corner. Don't worry about breaking or drifting." (Insert eye roll here). Fun tracks but too arcade for me. :(

I remember playing a demo of this game on PS3 and in the demo you got to use the Mitsubishi Eclipse, which sounded amazing. The way revs climbed as you applied throttle sounded amazing, raw and realistic ( much better than Gran Turismo, which had disappointing sound ).
I bought Dirt 2 and found the engine sounds in the released version were of worse quality.
Perhaps the algorithm generating engine sound was too heavy on resources and had to be axed, I don’t know. Amazing game overall. Became a lifelong fan since then

I used to play this so much on the PS3, I used to watch the videos of people crashing their cars and was amazed by the graphics and damage model. It was also the first time I played a PS3 game on HDMI since I had composite for a while
I remember trying to get all the trophies and there was one that I think required you to win an online race by like 0.1 seconds or something ridiculous, never got it and to this day it's mocking me on my PS3 trophy list.

Dirt 2 was a hellova game when it released. It looked amazing, performance was stellar, and the car physics felt great. Dirt 3 is a better game imo, so that's the one I go back to sometimes. Really fun to play with a wheel.
