@@ivanbarahona3592 lol me too i cant believe it! Its happens a lot to me its kinda weird
8 months late here, but actually NO. Or at least not necessarily. Just as the lady in the glasses and orange shirt said about the roots holding the onion together as you make your incomplete cuts, the skin can be used in a similar manner.
Personally, I quarter the onion, leaving the roots and skin intact and make a series of incomplete cuts crosswise along the quarters. As the cuts sink in, the quarter relaxes lengthwise, allowing you to repeat the process with incomplete cuts lengthwise. Then I curve the onion quarters inside out with the skin binding it together, stack them 4 high, and cut towards the skin, giving perfect dices.
When you reach the skin itself, it will fall away.
Not exactly a typical method, but with good control of the knife I have found no faster method.

"i buy them chopped"
me as a latinoamerican: wait what?
I didn’t know you could buy them chopped
You can in the UK as well. Frozen chopped onion is probably good if you only use a little onion every now and then. I use shallots more personally as they last a good length of time and hence less waste.
@@1Thunderfire perhaps you see less trash in your bin but there's no way precut onion is less wastefull than a complete onion. Just buy a smaller one.
@@kerv1310 When we do get onion, we do try to use it up and if I was living on my own, I'd definitely ensure that would be the case. As it is, we like shallots anyway.

Imagine being a busy chef and being called to teach people who aren't 4th graders how to cut an onion.
This makes me so happy that my mom taught me how to cook. People that can't do these basic challenges make me so sad
It makes me sad that we were never really taught how to cook in school or indeed, barely any practical skills at all; I often feel utterly inadequate because of it. Still, I'm trying to cook different things and once I finally get a house of my own, I'll really be able to get into it!
My mom always makes me cut the onions... And I still... STILL CRYYYY!!! But I made a fine cut onion. 😂 Yeah, cut the root last... At least the juices doesn't murder your eyes.
My mum hasn't taught me how to cook yet but I know how to dive an opinion it's not that hard...
tbh, idek how to cook, but at least i know how to cut things LMAO
not everyone has a mother to teach them how to cook. I'm sure you'll survive that condescending sadness for people less skilled than you once you descend from that high horse safely.
"Cut the tops and bottoms off"
Me: *screams in anger*
You don't cut the top and bottoms? ^^'
Krankar Volund I only cut the top off
@@krankarvolund7771 well you Dont cut the bottom aka root off, it holds the onion together so you can cut it nicely
@@aaronthewise5997 I've always cut the root, and I saw professional chiefs do it ^^'
Krankar Volund Bisect the onion through the root instead of cutting it off. It’ll hold the onion together, and the onion will sweat less. If you’re dicing it properly the root will get cut off at the end of the process.

Aldi sells them, I bought some in Germany because I didn't bring knives and a cutting board when I studied abroad. Convenience foods are not unique to America they can be found in pretty much any major city around the world. At least she is buying ingredients to make something and not eating a frozen TV dinner.
@@zv9390 I am sure people with disabilities do buy them but I think the primary customer is young professionals with small apartments and students in dorms. 2:23 damn she really used an egg slicer to try and dice an onion, bruh i'm shooketh..
At this point im pretty sure that these ppl are paid actors
I mean come on ITS JUST AN ONION
You'd be surprised at how stupid people can be without any prompting
If you've never diced an onion before I can see why they might have issues. The main one being not everyone knows what the word "diced" means. If they asked them to cut the onion into 5x5 millimeter chunkes, I'm sure they would all get the same end result. Also a lot of them know how to chop an onion but are in the start of the video because of their reactions or their confidence level.
fovika dice = cube, so seems obvious that diced means cut-into-shape-of-small-cubes... do they have negative IQ? and how tf I know that while not being a native speaker, nor ultra passionate about cooking?
~50yo lady doesn't know you should peel if before cutting, she's a sister of Tarzan, just recently got out of the jungle for the first time or what... holy shit!
Sting it’s pretty sadd if it’s not scripted. I don’t expect you to be Gordon Ramsay but if you can’t even cook simple meals for yourself as a grownup I think you should be damn ashamed of yourself. And that goes for all the basic skills in life like doing the dishes, laundry, cooking, sweeping, changing a tire, basic first aid skills etc. Some of these people don’t even know how to hold a knife or make a grilled cheese sandwich 🤦🏽♀️
I’m a vet tech, with a bachelors degree from a California state university. By no means am I stupid and I literally went the other day to help my sister cook and had no idea how to chop an onion. You really shouldn’t be so mean. Some people have never been taught and it’s not their fault. I’m sure there’s many things I know how to do that you don’t.... realize that everyone’s different, not everyone has grown up the same way, before you be so judgmental

omg i’ve actually never seen the so-called modern way of dicing an onion
Its the way I've always done it. Glad to see its catching on.
moara it’s seems like more work for the same result which is probably why it’s not taught in culinary school
omg same! Im glad that someone can relate
I guess I’ve been unintentionally doing it the modern way this whole time! Instead I use a whole onion. Cut the stem end off of a whole onion creating a flat surface for it to stand on, then while rotating the onion, slice toward the root from the outside in, allowing 1/8” between each slice, keeping the root intact, When completed all the way around, turn the sliced onion to it’s side, and slice perpendicular to the onion layers, almost like slicing onion rings. You’ll find that the onion drops into perfect little squares! I use half the onion for a recipe, and store the rest in the fridge for later.
@@moara4144 im the same it just feels right to follow the lines that is already there an whats more with this way it is easier to use every last bit of the onion, sure onions are cheap but Still dont waste food
the first way the chef shows gets a bit trickier to cut the last bit nicely.
You guys are the sole reason to get my Mother be proud of Me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
3:19, IMAGINE HOW MUCH PRACTICE THAT TAKESSS
50 people try to boil water
@Danny Dircio No, not if you're just boiling water. And besides, I think adding salt will actually make it take longer to boil. I always boil water with a lid on the keep the heat in, it will boil in half the time that way, then if I'm going to, I add salt after the water comes up to a boil. Also, this will prevent pitting and other issues with your pans, well, at least according to Rachel Ray who says if you add salt before the water boils your pots/pans can pit.
