I buy sheets of oak panels at lowes and they cut it into all the sizes I want. I use a hand held electric sander I bought at Walmart to make my layers of gesso smooth. and I do 4 layers. You will be amazed at the smoothness the sander dose. and the paint just glides on. wich is really great for fine detail work.
I use a foam roller to apply gesso it creates a very smooth finish , i roll it on untill the bubbles stop popping (it does)then I sand in between ,a sander is a great idea for detailed work even better.
The tannin found in oak, makes this wood unsuitable for oil painting. It would be better if you could find cedar wood (a wood that repels worms) for your painting. You can safely paint directly onto cedar wood with oil paint without any gesso preparation whatsoever.
These are really helpful comments. What acrylic gesso would be recommended for oil if your starting to prime your own wood panels or is it just to your preference?
I've always used canvas panels and boards but haven't tried wood panels so I'll be picking up some and some gesso and give them a try. It's always fun trying new things.
Question??? I have tried this also, doing just like you said and did. When oil painting on my panel, I thought the panel seemed like I was painting on plastic. The surface was very smooth, but felt strange painting on it. I am continuing to work on painting, but just not crazy about the feel of the acrylic underneath the paint. Have you ever thought about this’d? I guess you like it or you wouldn’t make panels like this. Have you ever put linen( just regular linen fabric ) onto the panel with the gesso then proceed as before? It gives you some tooth like the oil primed linen panels. Trying to make some of these to paint on. The look of the linen on the panel is beautiful. I also read somewhere on you tube, about using pvc glue to glue down fabric then applying gesso.. Have you heard this?
Unless you are using hardboard or plywood you need to size the wood first, to seal it and stop impurities coming through from the wood and also the oil seeping through the gesso into the wood. Also its best to clean the wood first and dry it, and of course seal the edges then prime them as well.
This is an old video but I see a lot of questions asking if you can use acrylic paint or something else instead of gesso. You can, but I wouldn't, and here is why you shouldn't. Gesso basically has particles dispersed in it so that when the mixture dries it provides a tooth and that results in a much more desirable surface to paint on. It is not just white paint. Some artists will sand in between layers of gesso to get the surface they like to paint on and that is something that really only works with stuff meant to be used as primer. Artist's acrylic paint won't give a pleasing surface to paint on. And just to note, for anyone just starting out, the one thing you can always be reassured of in painting is it's an ancient business. Don't assume you can or should come along and change recipes that have been tried and true, until you have at least used the basic ones. If you can't access gesso some kind of primer, ceiling paint or household interior white paint would make more sense than using the stuff in your tubes and tubs that are really for making your image not the painting surface. Even a thin underpainting in acrylic is done on a primed surface.
This is so helpful! I am building out a 1988 chevy van and I have so many pieces of wood that were miscut. I am trying to use the miscut pieces and turn them into something beautiful. Making art from the mistakes. Thank you for the help!
Try a drywal taping knife to put on gesso, it makes the gesso go with a glass-like finish and it's economizing on gesso because it doesn't get stuck in bristles of a brush and you don't really need to sand between coats. Clean up is really easy too. I do large panels so I purchased a 6" wide taping knife, but you could probably use a 3" on this size board. Make sure the drywall taping knife has a nice beveled smooth edge. I got mine in the paint area at Home Depot for about $15 Cdn.
I noticed you are using the acrylic gesso straight from the tub but as yet it advises you to mix with 40% water on my instructions I did so and I was a bit disappointed with the results. This was before I saw your video. Also, I wonder why you have to have a smooth surface as canvas isn’t smooth so is it for more detailed work?
love this exactly what i needed. i made some clear gesso from a tutorial i gound online which uses elmers glue and marble dust, becuase i wanted the wood color. do you think this is be good for painting on wood?
I know this is a year late, but I'm not sure how well that could work. Since elmers glue is water based, acrylic or watercolour may actually dissolve this 'gesso'. I don't know how oil paint would react to it though. Bare in mind, this is just my guess, if you have done this, and it worked, please correct me XD
Hey Lena, can I use oil paints for painting on walls? I want to paint a flower mural. I have primered the wall with wall primer..do I need to use gesso for painting on walls? Or the primered walls r enough?
Tama Sarkar Wall primer should be fine. In fact, I'm thinking of getting some to use for wood panels also. That's kind of my question too, gesso is fairly expensive compared to wall paint primer, but of course wall primer is just fine on walls.
Wait but isn’t some wood pieces made gesso smooth? Cause I just painted my wood panel, and it is the same texture? Please someone help, I am trying to do a deseign and put it in my room
Hi Lena! I gessoed the wood panel thrice and I sanded it well.. while applying the first layer, the color was spreading around, I don't know what I did wrong! Could you please help me? I applied thick layer of gesso, so shouldn't I do that?
Maybe you sanded the surface too much for your style of working so the surface ended up being too smooth. Unfortunately I don't have the experience to tell you for certain, but if the paint is spreading around a lot it may be because the surface is really smooth -like hot-pressed watercolour paper- and so the paint doesn't have much texture or grooves to adhere to.
In my experience, and from my own research, you can, if you so wish, paint oil on certain wood panels (especially mahogany and cedar) without any preparation whatsoever and your picture should last centuries. Slow drying oil paint applied directly onto a panel will bond with the fibre of the wood, forming a single body. Oil paint will absolutely not rot the wooden support, nor will it warp it. If you are really worried about protecting your panel and the longevity of your painting, paint the sides and back of the panel with your acrylic, but not the front, picture part of the panel. An acrylic gesso applied in three layers to a panel as described in this video creates a plastic barrier between the oil paint and the wood: your painting lays on a layer of acrylic and as such, is never really a part of the panel. You should note that some wood panels should be avoided for oil painting: northern fir and other acid woods, and oak. Finally, painting directly onto wood panels is delightful; so go ahead and try it without fear. Peace :)
hey ! good video ! may i ask you, how can i prepare wood panels without those layers of white? do i really have to use gesso or can i use another product so it shows the color of the wood? thank you ! :)
Hi Bhavana Mahajan, I saw your question and thought maybe I could answer it for you. Yes, plywood is okay. The types of wood you can paint on are, plywood, MDF board, maple, birch, and hardboard. I just recently painted on hardboard and I really liked it. The surface can be really smooth. Anyways, hope I helped :)
Mckenna B I just got birch wood. Gonna be using oil. What acrylic gesso would you recommend if you’re just starting out? Or is it just personal preference? And is painting it with no gesso an option for this wood? Thanx in advance
A rough surface is a stronger bind for any primer or painting foundation on wood, or any material. Its referred to as 'tooth'. Whats said in the video is categorically incorrect, sorry.

Nice! Do they cut the panels at Lowes for no additional cost? Is wood recommended for acrylics as well? Thank you all

thanks Angela. I'll try it, I've only ever used canvas but that can get expensive.
The first from 4 vids I watched that actually shows a process for real wood and not mdf panels, just what I was looking for. Thank-you.
I've always used canvas panels and boards but haven't tried wood panels so I'll be picking up some and some gesso and give them a try. It's always fun trying new things.

What do you use or do you recommend to use to size the wood? I know some people use gac 100 but that is hard to get my hands on here where I live.
@@jolandadejong9050 "Rabit Skin Glue" is used as sizing, I don't think there are bunnies in the glue anymore but it probably contains animal parts.
@@jazw4649 thanks😊
I wonder if large size panels would warp? And would gessoing the back side and edges help it not to warp?
Hi, can you tell me more by sizing?! I paint on wood panels size 9mm, but i just used layers of wood glue and acrylic gesso to prime it. Thank you
I love the colours in your paintings... the ones I can see on the wall in the video at least. Feeling inspired.
Thank you for the visual demonstration of this process. Very helpful and much appreciated.

Hi Lena. Do you find the wood panels easier to blend/glaze on compared to canvas?
Thankyou for sharing … which wood is that mdf or pine wood
Is it fine to put on acrylic gesso on canvas for oil painting?
Lena, can i use white flat latex as an alternative?

so helpful. thank you.
Awesome thank you
After I apply gesso, am I able to draw on it after? And am I able to use oil paints for this?
Slow reply but yes, after gesso layers are done you can draw and paint on it
A bigger brush for the gesso could be a good idea?
How long does the acrylic gesso take to dry before you can sand it?

do you primed the back of the panel also because it will absorbed the moisture in the air?
Good question!

What's your opinion on the Baumann method?

Can you use paint thinner for acrylic paints
What if you don't want your panel to be white ? Is there like a clear gesso or something
GAC 100 clear gesso

Using matte or gloss medium from your local art store should work fine
Thank you! That was helpful! Could I use a foam brush to apply the GAC 100 instead of a paintbrush?
That is fine. Use whatever brush you prefer.
Can we use mdf board for oil painting
Hi. What website do you purchase wood panels?
Im.in canada and am wondering too
This is just white paint or is something diferent?
Nice! Thank u for that!
hey ! good video ! may i ask you, how can i prepare wood panels without those layers of white? do i really have to use gesso or can i use another product so it shows the color of the wood? thank you ! :)
You can buy clear gesso which I sometimes use as a pastel under base. You could give it a try.
does anyone know anything about the archival qualities of the acrylic gesso?
Wow that worked fast.
what brand gesso do you use ? or does anyone have any good recommendations? x
Nice
Umh what if you didn't do this? Is there anything to put on the painting so that it won't crack later on?
....
Aydee Derix girl I did it too ☹️

When you varnish a painting?
what type of wood is this?
Does this apply for water mixable oils as well??
Yes, really good for any medium you wish to use.
Acrylic dressup? What's that?
Heyy Lena i dont have Acrylic gesso so can i use acrylic white paint instead of gesso to apply on the wood surface before painting.. plz reply..
Definitely dont use acrylic paint as the primer! Go buy some acrylic gesso atleast or an oil based primer for wood.
thank you... i did
How thick is the wood?
Why didnt you use a fine detail brush to apply to gesso? Lol
Do you still need to prime the wood with gesso if you’re using acrylic paint instead of oil paints? Anyone else is welcome to respond back 😇
can i prime A3 paper?
Brasil
in argentina you have to be rich to buy an ACTUAL wood panel xD
❤

pineapples
Before aplying gesso = primer you MUST aply acrilic size= acrilic fluid medium= acrilic fluid emulsion !
I did it too. This is what I used Stodoys plans designs for
I think you can make it yourself, just loook and learn from woodprix .
¿?
Why do you use wood panels?
Lena, you need a proper brush for priming.
A rough surface is a stronger bind for any primer or painting foundation on wood, or any material. Its referred to as 'tooth'.
Whats said in the video is categorically incorrect, sorry.
cut the music out please!
All of my woodworks I am making with wood prix. Google and try it.
Sto se to krijes a nista pametno nisi ni rekla boze svasta !
You can use woodprix instructions to build it in the cheapest way.
learn to do it better, girl ! watch the video !
Would these be wrap after apply gesso?
can you use acrylic paint to prime it? I don’t have gesso :(
Can i clean brushes with thinner?
Do you have to aply gesso or can you also put on white acrylic?
