On a technical level, it's impressive how well Yuzo Koshiro was able to sample those Roland TR-808 beats into the single PCM channel of the Sega Mega Drive's Yamaha YM2612 sound chip. It was an impressive technical feat how he was able to pull that off, as people didn't think music like this was possible on the Mega Drive up until then.

I still remember being at a family thing when I was a kid and my cousin Joey saying "hey want to go upstairs and play a game?" I was happy to notice he got Streets of Rage 2, we just kept playing that until I had to leave. I had to eventually get it because I was hooked.
Over a decade later this theme came to mind, there was some old 90's song playing on the radio and reminded me of this song so bad...I had to find it years ago and kept listening to it again.
Recently though, my friend brought his laptop over with tons of emulators on it, and I requested we played this game (after playing lots of others that I loved and missed). I was STILL impressed with how fun and vibrant the game was.
The images, the characters, THE SFX!!!, the MUSIC...omg everything had me in awe once again. This is truly a masterpiece in gaming History.

The music, sights, levels, enemies, and bosses are perfect in this game. SOR Remake does a VERY good job capturing the series, but still, SOR 2 is the absolute king of beat em ups. Depends on the genre, really. Yuzo Koshiro was a master of the Genesis sound chip, but the Genesis sound chip always felt somewhat limited to me. It’s really at it’s best when showcasing groovy techno dance tracks like this, or hard rock. It always lacked the diversity of the Super Nintendo sound chip to me, which showed with games like Mega Man X1, that the SNES could do hard rock just as well as the Genesis, if not better. That’s why I feel like the title of gaming’s best musical composer has to go to the more obvious choice, Nobuo Uematsu.

I just played Streets of Rage 2 for the first time (yes in 2022). I didn't play any of the Streets of Rage 2 games as a kid, I didn't play any side scrolling beat em ups at all, I went in totally blind and with no expectations or nostalgia. And damn is it fun! I've been playing it heaps all week. Partly because of the music, it's damn good.
